  • I like pretty much all cameras but I find something really quite impressive about a tiny camera that is very capable. The Pen Mini is one such camera.

    wish they would bring back the built in flash AND viewfinder option together so we can use both at the same time.

      On these smaller cameras I’m surprised that they didn’t go with a concealed pop up flash like on the Lumix LX3 or even a hinged type flash like the GX80

    Great little cameras. I had an E-PM1 which had a dodgy shutter and over exposed at fast shutter speeds and then got the 16mp E-PM2 which after having a quick look through my photo albums was one of my favourite cameras. That little camera on a summer holiday just gave me colours I doubt I could better with my more ‘capable’ cameras. I totted up that I’ve collected and uncollected an embarrassing > 50 digital cameras over the past 5 years or so. Some stayed longer than others but the E-PM2 seems to have been my 4th best camera and making ‘keepers’. No 1 is 5D classic, 2. Oly E-Pl8, 3. Ricoh GR. Feeling quite sad now that I moved it on.

      When I look back through my images it’s the EM10 mark ii that stands out in the last couple of years. Prior to that it was the Sony A7s which I think it a gorgeous photo camera despite being marked as a video body.
      The collection will no doubt continue to grow though 😁
      Thanks for watching 🖖

    Good one. I had a couple of the PM-1s, but sold them off due to the "lack" of features, they are (mostly) there but hidden in the menus. Kept the E-PL3, it is basically the same size, a tiny bit fatter and a smudge heavier but with easier interface with the buttons. If you look for a LV for them, stay away from the LV-3, it is basically a low res economy thingy. The ones to get is either the LV-2 or 4, with the 4 being the latest and by hearsay greatest, but it needs a firmware update on the "older" models to work. I have the LV-2 and cant really fault that one. There can be some shutter shock issues on them, I had a few rather headscratching moments when using the E-PL3 with the 17mm f:2.8 pancake in a month long single in challenge over fuzziness. Ended up swapping the lens with for the Lumix 20mm and sharpness galore, which I also got from the 17mm on my other Olys, so there was something going on there. 🙂

      Yeah it’s a fairly stripped back camera and having no real dials and few buttons makes it slow to use. Image quality is pretty good though and I’m happy to have it in the collection. I appreciate the info regarding the evf, I’ll see if I can find a vf2 for a reasonable price. Thanks for watching 🖖

    Still have my original version in full working order. It's what got me into Micro Four Thirds. Great pocket sized street/ event / party camera . I'm thinking of getting a used Olympus 17mm f.28 pancake for it . Great for photos, video is a wobbly mess of rolling shutter ,

    • @DavidFlowerOfficial
      @DavidFlowerOfficial  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah that wobbling is very obvious on the 9mm😂
      I think my next lens will be the 9-18 for a bit of flexibility 🖖

    I have a Lumix GF3. Its a brilliant little (little being the key word) camera for the price, chuck the 12-32mm or the 20mm pancake lens on and away you go.
    I wouldn't mind adding a pen to my collection though.

    I have two E-PM2's and I have a love/hate relationship with them. I love their size and fantastic sensor, but I hate that they don't have a silent shutter, and that the shutter is so loud! I've still yet to find the perfect pocket camera. That search continues...

    I don't do video...I just wish folks (content creators etc) would convince Panasonic and OM to continue their GX and EP lines...I loved the GX9 (at one time I had 3 of them)....I first got started in M43 when it first came out with the Ep1 and shortly there after... the EPL1... and I kinda loved the Pen F as well...But...alas...I traded out all my M43 gear due to fear that my favorite (small range finder) style will forever be forgotten. (as it appears to have been) and i would be stuck with a bunch of lenses and no up to date camera to use with them...(I dislike the large DSLR Panasonic and OM cams.)...Its like the camera industry is dictating to the user...Not the other way around.
    I now relegate myself to a pair of A7c bodies along with an even older original A7s....small size gets me going...LOL. Cheers

    • @DavidFlowerOfficial

      I think the big problem the camera industry is facing is that we’re very close to reaching the limits of current technologies which is why most “upgrades” for the last decade or more have been incremental at best and focus more on the video side or features that have little effect on taking pictures. The Nikon D800 nailed image quality back in 2012 and we haven’t seen many cameras exceed that yet.
      It would be great to see a gx9ii or an OM 10 but it seems like both companies are focusing solely on flagship models now.
      Thanks for watching 🖖

    There was the Olympus Air A01 (from 2015). Significantly smaller in almost all dimensions. It was an interesting concept but more or less nobody bought it.
    Unfortunately the camera is almost useless without the smartphone and since Olympus stopped support it's now very difficult to get and run the software.
    Question is, does this even count as camera?

    • @DavidFlowerOfficial
      @DavidFlowerOfficial  Місяць тому

      I’d never heard of this until just now but upon having a look at it, it’s more like the Alice camera and requires a phone for more than basic blind snapping. Very interesting idea and I seem to recall Sony making something similar?
      In everything I read I never even saw this mentioned, even by Olympus so maybe even they themselves don’t put it in the same category as the pen mini or lumix gm1.

    • @Ulrich.Bierwisch
      @Ulrich.Bierwisch Місяць тому +1

      @@DavidFlowerOfficial The idea to have a small box with just the mount and sensor and use it with the smartphone has surfaced several times but it never took off. You can build your own body around it, mount it on a drone or in other difficult places but at the end, the market for this is very small. The next problem is the software that needs to be maintained and updated for new versions of smartphones and in this case, even a company like Olympus decided to drop the development and leave the customers with a fading out usability after a few years.

    Nah, it's E-PM2 for me. More or less the same size, but 16 MP, some more (function) buttons, and compatible with the VF-4 (that I also own, or better said just got back both from a friend who got my E-M10II instead - I wanted/need a small camera as a companion to my 4x5). No comparison in image quality to my Pen F digital, but really nice combined with the tiny 14-42 EZ (funny enough, I got the pancake zoom after I gave the E-PM2 to my friend, but now they are together as it should be ;-)). When I need the quality and features, the Pen F is perfect. For anything else, the E-PM2 is actually a good choice (and I have it in A all the time, so the one wheel on the back works just fine).

    • @DavidFlowerOfficial
      @DavidFlowerOfficial  2 місяці тому

      Based on the m4/3 cameras I’ve used I think that 16mpx is probably the sweet spot for them. I was curious about the pen f until I saw how crazy the price of those things got too😂

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin 2 місяці тому +1

      @@DavidFlowerOfficial Yeah, the Pen F was and is overpriced. But I would not sell mine (bought it new, had it sent in for repair of the SD card slot, but it was worth it). One day I might go for an E-M1II, as I know its qualities (had one for a day to test it), and it is comparatively cheap by now - weather sealing, better dynamic range and a tad more sharpness would be the reason, but the Pen F will stay!

      @c.augustin yeah my main m4/3 photo body is the em1 mkii and it’s an absolute gem and you’re right about the price. On average they seem to be around the £400 here which imho is a steal 🖖

    I'm looking for a pocketable camera (as a second camera) and was considering the lumix LX7, or even the LX15 (if I can find one for a reasonable price). But I was wondering what was the practical difference between a LX15 and this pen mini with a 12-32 to cover the same range. Size is amost the same, the lx15 has faster lens and more Mpx, but a smaller sensor. What would you recommend for a really pocketable camera (I have a EM10 M2. and whileit's very small, it's not pocketable). Thanks.
    ps
    Maybe this could be an idea for a future video, there are lots of those around, but not so many that are useful

    • @DavidFlowerOfficial
      @DavidFlowerOfficial  2 місяці тому +1

      This is a good question. My instinct tells me that in good light you’ll experience little to no real difference, but of course this depends on your end use. If you’re photographing for yourself to capture day to day things and only sharing to the internet or printing small, then the compact cameras are great(I love the canon G10 and Lumix LX3 for this).
      You already have a solid camera in the EM10 mkii for everything else so I think the compact might be the way to go.
      Thanks for watching🖖
