Mercedes-Benz CLK LM Sound - Accelerations & Fly Bys!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2018
- Born as an evolution of the 1997 Mercedes CLK GTR, the CLK-LM was unveiled during the 1998 24h of Le Mans, when already two rounds of the 1998 FIA GT Championship were won by the V12-powered CLK GTR.
The LM was powered by a 5.0-litre NA V8 engine which was not only a lot lighter than the previous V12 but also more reliable since it was based on the 1989 Le Mans-winning engine. The body was revised to be more suitable for the high-speed track (nose and roof were both lowered, reducing the drag considerably). The new car showed its performance in qualifying but during the race some problems forced to retire both cars. Mercedes continued to use the CLK-LM in the 8 following FIA GT rounds winning all of them.
Enjoy watching this car driving on the Goodwood hillclimb course during the 2018 Festival of Speed!

So many High Stakes memories...
Damn straight.
I think High Stakes featured CLK GTR which is the earlier V12 variant of the CLK racers. Memories of NFS for sure, though!

GT1.... A series that is sorely missed. This was one of the greatest eras in racing along with the infamous Group C. Today’s era of electric power, small turbos, fuel conservation, and tree hugging is so far odd the mark.

Absolute monster. Period XD
legend car i just love it
What a beauty! I have the pink BWT version, and it's the car all my friends want to drive when they come over. But I have to admit that this livery takes it one step higher. And yes, the CLK GTR is such a sleek beast. Also a favourite of mine.
I love that this model is called the “LM” but it never actually did that well at Le Mans. But it was practically unbeatable in the FIA GT1 class, that’s why GT1 failed.
GT1 failed with the exact same mistake in the early 2000s with Saleen GT1 and Maserati GT1. Once again prototypes used as GT cars with partially legal road versions.
It's quite fascinating when you think about it.
It did race at Le Mans, the CLK GTR raced in the FIA GT1 Class

in terms of top speed yes, but in corners the GT1 cars eat shit for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It's very strange comparation. These GT1's are more prototypes than true GT's.

Greatest car to not win Le Mans ever. I don't care what anyone says, nothing can compare to the mighty CLK-LM. It literally won every race it entered during the '98 FIA GT Championship.

The coolest Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR 24 Hours of Le Mans racing car. 😀🏎🏁🏆
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
this is the FIA GT car. the Le Mans version sound just like the Sauber C9 but with more RPM :D finally I can hear that version of the CLK LM
Thank you :D
But the FIA GT car and the Le Mans car are basically the same thing, the same spec, same engine. Maybe you think it sound different cause this one probably had some sound restriction on. Also I don't think you can really get to appreciate the sound of this compared to full throttle at Le Mans just from this little sprint.
*sigh* why do I always have to prove myself? look at 2 min 30: ua-cam.com/video/DSU7j_mdx54/v-deo.html this sound, even if it is bad quality, is different fron the one shown here at goodwood. the one at Le Mans had the exact same engine than the Sauber C9 without the turbos and with more RPMs. the one here, from the FIA GT, uses a similar engine, with a different cranckshaft, suited for a more sprinty race than a 24h race… you can't have a growling bassy sound with a full throttle acceleration and having a high pitched sound like here when applying a bit less throttle. that doesn't exist. and still, the driver here was applying a full throttle. just compare some footages of the 24H of Le Mans 1998 and some FIA GT 1998 videos and you'll see (especially at the start of the Suzuka race)
@@togera77 Sounds like you're right. I never knew Mercedes used a flatplane crankshaft for the sprint version of the GT108B V8. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!
basically, the Le Mans version used the exact same M119 than the Sauber C9 just without the turbo and with more RPMs. the FIA GT one uses the modified version which is known as the GT108B

Time to drive this again when GT7 is out
Saddest part is that it doesn't even sound like this, sounds just like it did in Project Cars, which is a shame because this flat V8 here sounds WAY better then the one used at Le Mans, which is the one in GT7, just posted a vid on my channel earlier about the car if you'd like to hear the sound.
The sound is like a mix between a Ferrari F430 and a DTM..
Was thinking exactly the same
yea , this is v8 with "flat" crankshaft . I dont`t like this sound , imho classic v8 sounds better
@@siniyden damn straight, that C9 was a banger
There were two different engine configurations used during the season
though, one of them sounded like a C9/C11, the other one is the one
heard in this video.
wish they kept a v12 in this beauty
Neyrox might have lasted a bit longer in the race if they had!
@@markpenman1 They got rid of the V12 specifically because it wouldn’t last at Le Mans which is ironic. Plus, this V8 is the same as used in the legendary Sauber C9 and C11.
@@Logan912 remind me how that worked out for them. I was at the race
@@markpenman1 he's not disagreeing with you, he's just saying why the v12 wasn't used
@@Logan912 Not exactly the same. The M119 in the CLK-LM was upgraded by AMG but was still detuned to 600 hp. It's also more lightweight (900 kg) but significantly slower (360 km/h) compared to the Sauber Mercedes C11 (730 hp, 905 kg and 407 km/h).

Wrong car
wrong car dumb f*ck
this car have a flat plane crankshaft, but that of the previous years had the crossplane crankshaft, its sound was more American than this one that is more European, but i like it, cheers from Venezuela
I think they used the crossplane crankshaft V8 only during the 1998 Le Mans. Then for the rest of the season a flatplane one
the best part about this? That class is coming back to Le Mans.
Not necessarily
Don't hold your breath. It's still gonna be LMP1, but with some very vague road car styling elements thrown in. Nothing like the road legal monster you see here.
Yes! New road-legal Le-Mans cars confirmed!
@@Redstoneprime316 they are not confirmed, and they won't be road legal, they will just look more like road cars, but there wont be any road car requirement.
Tuff Ed Boi so, Aston Martins will be based on the Valkyrie and Mercedes will be based on the AMG One, for example?
Such a beautiful car but the sound somehow doesn't do it for me, CLK-GTR has it edged in sound but looks wise both are gorgeous!
What's the decal on the roof?
Better sound than McLaren F1 GTR, if you ask me. Sounds more muscular.
2:53 is that Juan Pablo Montoya?
Klaus Ludwig, FIA GT World Champion back in 1998.
not even close
Use all your 74 output in all thoughts to put it into this engine to wake Schumacher, Mikel,up. Please, from xoxos
I remember of this Mercedes literally "flying" over Le Mans!
naaa that’s the CLR my friend, not the CLK GTR or this, the CLK LM.
@@GTACIP My bad for the mistake, i researched and realized that they have a similar body but with a way to different aerodynamic purpose and a V12 engine instead of Clr's V8.
And now Mercedes is making AMG One
Serious question for anyone to answer. Even though this V8 is based off the Sauber C9, why does it sound more like a 4 cylinder? The Saubers had a muscle/Nascar sound and these have a Ferrari type V8 sound. Crossplane vs Flat-Plane? Exhaust Manifold/Header design?
Flat-Plane crankshaft in this video.
I think it's because they tuned the rev band.. The V8 in CLK LM actually revs more than SC9/SC11 which makes it sounds less like a nascar/muscular V8 like you said.
The real one sounds way better than the GT7 rendition.
Yes i don't understand why everyone says that the CLK sounds realistic in GT7 😂
4:30 😲
ルマンの中継で聴いた時は、もっとアメリカンV8っぽい音に聴こえた気がしたけど、ここで聴くとヨーロッパのGP2とかそっち方面の音みたい。マフラーが当時と違うのだろうか?
damn was hoping for that V12 roar
that's the 1997 CLK-GTR you were hoping to hear. different car even with similar look. here, it's the 1998 CLK-LM FIA GT one
@@togera77 yea I know the LM version is in this video, but I didn't know it had a V8 instead
then, you certainly didn't know that there were 2 versions of the CLK LM: one for the 24h of Le Mans and one for the FIA GT. they used 2 different engines. both 90% similar between eachother, but still, very different(especially the crankshaft leading to the sound)
1:23 Did he turn wheel too much so it got in touch with the left front fender?
No, he was going slow enough without downforce, stiff racing suspension, and on an offcamber area of the road, so it had minimal contact with the road and slipped a bit. No big deal.
The V8 sounds meh like a Ferrari or a Rally Car, I still prefer the manly growl of the V12 CLK GTR.
There were two different engine configurations used during the season though, one of them sounded like a C9/C11, the other one is the one heard in this video.
@@armorgeddon yeah you are right i was sure there definitely was another CLK LM sounding like the Sauber
Yeah but try to start them after 15 min. race.
What?
@@armorgeddon THE V12 HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM. YOU COULD START HIM EVERY TIME (ALMOST) when he was hot(even with a extra battery). so the V8 was more efficient and bether to run.
Shame that the flat plane sound is not available on videogames (PCars2, GTR2,...)
And now, not even on Gran Turismo 7 either, as you can see on my 2nd most recent video. It's a damn shame. Lol.
Who is the driver? I thought I heard the commentator refer to Klaus (Ludwig).
Still have yet to see another racing car with an airbag for the driver...
Sounds like when I hit my pinky on the edge of the table
Honestly, it looks better than it’s sound. No offense I never heard any CLK LM or even GTR in real life. But I hear this sounds more like a group B rally car, and if I close my eyes without knowing what car it is, it’s sound a bit 4 cylinder honda motor in it, high rev without vtec.
I can confirm this car can't fly.
Indeed. But the CLR could.
@@dylansmit3883 still a sexy car, if only the pitch angle was a little less than 0 it wouldn't had flipped the way it did.

WAR STEINER 😁 Yes, this car meant war on the track.
This car looks like a mercedes C-Class had a passionate night of sweet, sweet love with a Ferrari F40 and a Porsche Carrera GT, and I love it.
I agree. That's a great way to put it.
gran tourismo says 5.0 v8 version 800 hp 950 nm torque?
Gran Turismo uses the unrestricted engine. which is plain stupid. both CLK LM versions (Le Mans and FIA GT) had the engine restricted to approximately 600 hp
thanks for reminding
In GT4 they even called this car a GTR, despite using both the model and specs of an LM.
yup. in GT4. but in GT6, I think it was finally called CLK LM
.... It doesn't sound like a v12? I thought they were v12s? Or was that only the road version? Cuz this is the sound of a flatplane v8....
CLK GTR has V12 engine
This is CLK LM, a slightly modifed version of CLK GTR equipped with Sauber C9/C11 flatplane NA V8, They swapped the engine with a goal to last long in Le Mans and unironically it didn't because of engine problems.
Dietmar Kamczyk from HWA confirmed me the road legal version has a 6 liter engine. Anybody here that has documents, images whatsoever to show?
he told you the truth, the road version is 6.0 V12 or (7.3 V12SuperSport)
@@alvarokoteli3643 He meant 6 liter V8.
I would do flips to drive this
Wrong model there, m8.
1:25 how did he lock the front wheel doing 30mph???
By pressing the break
yeah but it's not like he was heavily braking from high speed
lack of suspension travel
yeah, looked very strange..
Lack of downforce at low speed. It's easier to lock a brake with low load.
Is this the same version of lemans 99'?? The engine seem not the same... it sounds like turbocharged like audi v8 3.6L turbo but if I remind mercedes got an atmospheric v8 5 721cm3 🤔🤔🤔
No, in '99 the car was called CLR and not CLK but the "issue" of the sound is the same for this CLK LM too, even if the engine isn't really the same. The LM in fact sounded like an American V8, raw and raspy, during the 1998 Le Mans 24h but in the following races of the season it had the same note you hear in this video (I think the same would have happened with the 1999 CLR if the project wasn't abandoned after the famous "flight").
Basically they opted for a crossplane cranckshaft version for the long endurance races, like Le Mans, but a flatplane layout for the other rounds of the FIA GT Championship giving the engine a total different note
@@19Bozzy92 yeaahh man sorry I mixed lemans 99 and 98 yeah true but I remember when Schneider was on wheel that sound like ya know panoz esperante gtr-1 😍😍 back in the old days 😏😏😏
Clk gtr v12😍
Clk gtr LM v8😡
Well, at least it’s the same V8 that the Sauber C9 and C11 used. Unfortunately, it didn’t last for Le Mans.
Ciao
This car deserved a v8 engine as the CLR Mclaren did. What a shame.
(im talking about a true v8 engine that sounds as a v8 engine)
