I hope that in a year or so you can post pictures of what these 4 look like as adults. I love watching your puppy videos. I know some breeders do different things with pups, but I'm not sure I know of anybody who does more. The people getting your puppies have dogs that got a very cared for start!
I havw been letting my 4 week old puppy go there to sleep casually without closing the door to teach her the crate is a safe place not a prison but i will have to do this 👍🏼
Kat, when crate training how often do you put Mom back with puppies? My Mama is getting really tired of her pups and tends to stay out of the whelping box. Last night, all of our pups learned to climb out of the whelping box. So I'm thinking I should start crate training at night, but would this disrupt the nursing rhythm? The pups are eating soft puppy food three times a day.
How old are your puppies? We usually start letting momma hang out in a crate away from her puppies for a few hours at a time around 5 weeks old. Then they get more time away from momma as they get older. By 7 weeks old, the puppies are sleeping in their crates overnight by themselves!
Cute pups, have a black and white ticked GSP male who is just ready to turn 1 year. My vet said he should not be neutered until he's a year, is that correct? Would love your input please.
My vet said I could have my dog spayed after she turned 6 months. My vet said I should probably have it done before her first heat cycle. I had her spayed a few weeks after she turned 6 months. Why did your vet say to wait until your dog was at least a year old?
The thing is that in the real world puppies are not put in the darkness that looks like punishment. I remember when I was little our dog (female dog) gave birth to some precious puppies and it was in a place where my dad stored wood in a house which was built in the patio of our main house. No darkness there, except in the night. The mother went to eat and came back to care for the puppies. When they opened the eyes they would roam around, but not too far. We would play with puppies. But I don’t recall they cried because we never put into isolation in the darkness during the day. Nature took the lead in the lives of our puppies.
The small size works really well. However they will outgrow it by 12 -16 weeks so investing in a less expensive crate for in the house that is the small size might be a better option. Then investing in a bigger more expensive crate later.
Hi there, I’m getting an English pointer in a few weeks time and I have an old cat crate (44cm long x 28cm wide x 30cm high). Would this be suitable to start crate training in, and ok to then buy a larger one that will be large enough once she reaches her adult size? I have no idea what size puppy will be when I get her, but I’m told only slightly smaller than a GSP. Thanks!
Really great content. Thanks for all the information. Could you(or have you) done a video on picking a dog from a litter? What qualities / traits to look for? Maybe using these four(4) pups as an example? Thanks!
We start our pups at 6 weeks. They have an hour at a time during the day for 2 sessions to start. We put them in the crates at 10 pm after potty and play outside then take them out to potty one at a time at 12-1 am. We take them out again at 4-5 am. Gradually this extends from 4-5 am until 6 am. It’s hard work but so worth it when they go home and their families don’t have to deal with difficult puppies in their crate. After watching this video I might start at 5 and 1/2 weeks for short periods of time.
I didn't overnight crate train until they could go through the night no potty. I kept them in a playpen with an open crate and a litterbox overnight. They do stay in the crate most of the day with the door closed.
They can’t have their vaccines until they are at least 6 weeks old. They are fine to go outside, but should be monitored closely and never taken around unvaccinated dogs or parks/dog parks where sick dogs could have been until they have had their vaccines 😊
I do my shots at 8 weeks for my pups. Vets want to reduce the risk for exposure so they say this meaning do not allow your other animals to leave the yard/house until all puppies are rehomed, do not allow new animals in the home/yard, have anyone meeting puppies keep shoes away from them as parvo can be on shoes, have people sanitize hands, clean up all dog poop before puppies play and while playing. If you have other animals those animals must be vaccinated and healthy prior to allowing your puppies to be in the same yard as them.
I really don’t get this... why is it so important to have dogs in crates? You have beautiful dogs and they seems to be in top condition and temperament. I don’t want to be rude or something like that. I’m a breeder too, but not on the breed you have. I have bred dogs the last 30 years. I never have my dogs in crates. Just on dog shows and in the car. I have for my puppies a large puppy pen with many different toys and things that they can explore and also have them outside in my yard. In the night I have a litter box in their puppy pen and if they need when they are that age that these puppies are they go there to do their things. So my question why do you think it’s so important to train the puppies to a crate? Here in my country it’s forbidden to have dogs in crates.
Watching y'all has given me a very clear level of expectation from any breeder I choose to use in the future.
Thank you! I have my first litter on the ground and I’m sooo pumped to to start them on the “fun stuff” such as crate training and manding!
Good luck and have fun!

the best quality with content and presentation I've seen across a number of subjects and particularly dog training.. excellent stuff.
Beautiful puppies! I love black gsp, they're very rare in my country.
When you are excited to see dogs poop!! Very helpful for me as a rescue foster to litters of puppies!

It depends on size of dog, they want to finish developing their growth plates before getting neutered.
What size Ruff Land crate do you guys use for a full-sized GSP? I saw Muddy hop up in one - just wondering if it’s a Large or Intermediate. Thanks...
Large!!

Thanks for watching.
What is mastitis of whatever you mentioned? How to look for it and how to prevent it?
How do you manage ticks? Do you have a bulletproof routine? Any suggestions are welcome.
Seresto collars
what size ruff crate do you recommend for 8wk-10wk pup starting out?

Great thanks!

Can I let them 3-4 hours in the crate at 5 week old? I come back for dinner, but cant be there before...
How does this work through the night? I'm not getting out of bed every 2 hours. 🤔
