Once upon a time (2012), an a capella group went on a Royal Caribbean cruise as guest singers... They were warned about one of the singers in the permanent cast of being an a capella enthusiast. This enthusiast was Austin Brown, who, first time hearing Home Free sing, thought, "I gotta sing with them, I gotta sing with them..." Home Free went to Austin's performance (he was featured singer), in which Austin sang Bring Him Home. Blew the HF boys away! Soon after, one of the HF co-founders retired, and they hired Austin. Not long after that, HF auditioned for the 4th season of the Sing-Off (2013), and... the rest is history. If you get a chance, check out the Sing-Off performances, as they're live. These performances really show how HF went from a good pop a capella group to a country a capella phenomenon. Austin is featured heavily because the Sing-Off producers only wanted to showcase a couple singers per group. And, yes, check out Austin's version of Bring Him Home on his channel. Incredible. Follow that with Two Country Singers Try to Sing Opera - Nessun Dorma. (Also on Austin's channel.)
In fact Home Free made Austin wait 6 months before getting in touch , having agreed to meet him in Chicago (of all the places for a Southern boy to hang around). He worked as a waiter, probably remembering his days on the ships when the living was easy! and was about to give up and move to New York and the audition circuit there. It's hard not to wonder what his career would have been like if Rob hadn't got in touch.
This is an early performances by Home Free. Chris Rupp was still a member. To do Austin's performance of Bring Him Home justice, you ought to see his solo accompanied with his friend Sebastian on piano at Austin's home. Austin (and the other Home Free members ) have only improved through the years. Tim (bas) is the member with a five octave range. Fans say that Tim is developing s six octave range. All the members are true professionals who take their art seriously. On top of that, they are nice humble guys who treat their fans and other musicians with respect.
This is beautiful, but I love the one on his UA-cam channel. Just Austin and Sebastian (Sebastian playing), Austin singing…..all in the warmth of Austin’s living room. It’s even more amazing.👍🏼
This solo is actually the best version. He sings with a pianist. His channel is under his name (Austin Brown). ua-cam.com/video/NGP1nEG-OTQ/v-deo.html He also has a duet on his channel with Rob (the guy with the big beard and glasses) where they sing Nessun Dorma ua-cam.com/video/5dBENngNDhs/v-deo.html
The version that Austin has on his personal page is absolutely stunning - depending on the day it wavers between Alfie Boe and Austin for my favourite version of Bring Him Home - and uh .. yeah Nessun Dorma Austin and Rob...
He was so sick when they did this live. Not a true show of his talent. The one on his channel is absolutely amazing! The ending is breathtaking. If you thought this blew you away, the one he did in his living room with piano accompaniment you will be unable to speak.
You need to see another side of Austin (and Rob)! Check out "Two Country Singers TRY Singing Opera". (BTW, TIM is the one in the group with a 5+ octave range)
The fact that the rest of the guys made the effort to learn that glorious harmony to help show Austin off just shows how much they respect each others' talent. I see plenty of people have suggested that you go watch Austin's solo of this, as well.
This is astonishing for the middle of a concert live performance. But his solo performance from his living room is even more impressive, if that's possible. A definite must watch.
These people, the members of these groups... You'll notice, I hope, that, for the most part, when we speak about the members of the various groups as a group, a collective, we'll quite often refer to them as "these people" or as the "members of the groups". It isn't often that we refer to them as human. Mostly because...ya know, we're not quite sure. Oh, they're people, certainly! But, human? Jury's still out on that one. The level of talent they each display, each in their own way, just isn't normal. ( Of course they're human! But, the sheer talent each of them has is insane. So much so it's almost enough to make one wonder. )
There have been frequent suggestions that they are in fact angels. At times, this seems quite believable - eg in Brothers in Arms, they sound like a band of angels flying over the battlefield.
If you don't know the background, Austin is trained in theater, and the members of Home Free came across him on a cruise ship and immediately asked him to join the group. If you are interested in the history of Home Free then check out Chris Rupp's UA-cam channel and there is a 4 part history of Home Free, as well as some of his reviews of HF songs where he was still a member of the group and he explains the behind the scenes on a lot of the songs.
They didn't ask him immediately, since they didn't have a vacancy. Rob was the one who quietly let him know that it was likely that there would be one. They then made him wait 6 months before getting in touch. This is not a kind way to treat a young performer who has to make a living and should in that period have been in New York auditioning. As it was, he had to work as a waiter. Even when they got in touch, they made him audition, even though he had sung with them several times on board ship. They don''t seem to have understood what they had stumbled across, and mainly hired him because he could read music!
Yes, please react to the "official" version with his pianist, Sebastian. Then Nessun Dorma. Epic awaits. Again, you dont need to compare the different artists. Just enjoy the beauty they produce. I have watched this reaction several times just to see what gobsmacked looks like!
You need to listen to his solo version. It's even better. Heed us Home Fries. We know what we're talking about. Check out the solo version. Bring smelling salts.
I hope you have looked up Austin’s solo video of this by now. As I understand, Austin was “under the weather” when he did this live version. If you compare the two, perhaps you will notice his voice wavers and breaks a little hear. In the solo, he actually hits clearer and (believe it or not) higher.
This was just video from a cell phone. You will see twice as much from Austin if you'll listen to the production of Austin singing this quite intentionally and alone with just lovely piano accompaniment. It's only fair to Austin that you listen to that one. This one is not comparable at all to what he can do with this piece of theater music.
I know you have heard others suggest his other video’s, and they are both unbelievable and different enough that you can enjoy both performances, and not feel like you are watching the same thing. Keep the Home Free coming.
Austin is amazing, for sure. He has a degree in Musical Performance and he has made awesome use of that degree!! (BTW - I love ALL the guys, they're all amazing talents!)
Austin's voice is something special especially that high tenor range, but I don't know if he covers 5 octaves - he might but that is usually said about Tim. . LOL -- Wanna watch Austin's mind NOT on the music? Watch "colder" memory lapse.
WOW, YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO HIS CHANNEL AND REACTED TO THAT VERSION. I wish I could hear you react to the other version because he was under the weather at this concert. At the very leastm please listen to it and tell us what you think. CHEERS!
You have made a common mistake by equating a capella with barbershop quartet. That is just one type of a capella music. Home Free just proves that over and over again.
Waiting for him to hear "Listen to the Music" or "Can't Stop the Feeling" and call it barbershop quartet. And don't even bring up masterpieces like "Country Roads" or "Brothers in Arms" and "barbershop quartet" in the same conversation!! 😉😳
Both his live performances are the best... I actually prefer these, but I love his solo also. I'm always amazed at his breath control and he has so much of it (breath, I mean).
This is good to hear all of them. They’re all really good singers. I heard Austin had a cold or something so not quite at his best if you can believe that. There’s another version with him alone with his pianist Sebastien Duyon and Austin goes really high at the end…it’s superb! You have a beautiful voice. Home Free has a great catalogue of music.
Enjoying your reactions. Being a vocalist and having training, you can speak about the techniques and such. Me, I just love their sound, their personalities and performances. I’ve seen them live several times. Their concerts are so much fun!
Austin's voice has changed in the last few years. He seems to have worked on it during lockdown, which also gave him a chance to rest the voice and kick back with his new (then) gf, who helped him develop his solo channel. The voice is now fuller and more mature sounding but with added sweetness in the head voice and a gorgeous lower register. I do rather feel that it's not quite fair to show video of someone years before they hit their best, particularly since his latest version is right there on his channel.
I thought you said you read the comments!!! How many times have you been told that these guys are TALENTED!!!😅😂😅 I'm going to see them live in September when they're in the UK...I can't wait! I recommend that you watch the Adam Rupp drum solo! And, btw the guy in the baseball cap is Chris Rupp, the Beatboxers brother and are the founders of Home Free! Chris has left and was replaced by Adam 'Chance' Chance who regularly fills in for Tim on bass when Tim is singing/leading! Congrats on your 1k subs - you're getting better at this so keep up the good work! Out of curiosity, where are you based? And do you ever do YT livestreams? If yes, when is your next one? If no, why not? Living your reactions now and analysis at the end, instead of paying every few seconds! 🤣😂🤪😂🤣💖👍 (At time of commenting I've noticed give now over 2k subs - nice one!!!!
Chance does a great deal more than fill in for Tim. His leads are amazing and his voice blends perfectly in harmony. He has brought an enormous breadth of musical knowledge and taste to the band as they have struggled to throw off the reputation of being basically unserious, and has directed several videos. He has also developed an impressive solo career (putting out an album later this year) and in collab with the Hound and the Fox. Chance is the best thing to happen to the band since winning the Sing Off.
@@patriciamcl54 yes, I know. But at the time of making the comment, he was just learning about Home Free and he was 'filling in' for Tim in the song on bass, so was contextual.
I know many are recommending Austin's solo version accompanied by piano but I really like this one with the beautiful backing vocals supplied by Rob, Chris and Tim.
I agree with others, you really, really need to listen to him singing this by himself, in his home. The sound quality is much better and tI think you will be even more blown away! I cry every time I watch it. You can find it on his UA-cam channel.

I had to laugh when you said you can sing half of the female parts. As a low contralto who mostly sings baritone and tenor pieces I'm the inversion of that
Congratulations on your 1.15K landmark! Just from the bit of singing you gave us - you've got a career coming! Another live Austin you might like is him singing "Unchained Melody" at Tim's 6th Birthday Bash ua-cam.com/video/l8E-G_UAj3s/v-deo.html. His duet with Rob of "Nessun Dorma" (on Austin's channel) is terrific. In an interview with Patrol Gaming, Austin said he really wanted to show off "Opera Rob" but Rob said he wouldn't unless Austin sang it with him. Austin said he was okay but that Rob was fantastic. I love how they support each other.
You should see this on Austin’s channel with a piano accompaniment. Don’t forget he has a degree in musical theatre from Oklahoma City University. Rob studied Opera in college.
Austin was definitely very good with this song. I have seen him do this song several times and he never misses. As Vicki Adkins suggested...Rob and Austin...Two Country Singers try Singing Opera-Nessum Dorma. So good. Thanks
Thank you ! But you need to listen to the one that just came out . I’m thinking that you and him would sound good together . You have a beautiful voice to . Do not stop singing do like Austin and keep on you will just get better like him . Thanks so much
I absolutely love Home Free and to follow you along as you discover then. Once you’ve got the hang of Home Free and Voctave, add some Pentatonix to the mix as well!
This is wonderful but I promise that his solo with Sebastion on the piano, is even better. Tim is the one with the five octave range, the "Bass" this is Austin.
Confused....thought you said you weren't gonna pit one a capella group against another. The performers in the group's are all friends and do crossover collabs and don't consider themselves in a playoff to be pitted against one another. The groups are really different in the direction they go and the types of presentations they do. Just relax and ENJOY them is my advice.
No, it doesn't. Austin has given us his definitive performance on his channel. It's unfair to ask a singer who may be performing every night in the week, plus endless travelling, to reach the level of preparedness needed for this piece every night. You can hear here that he was well enough to do the show but his being ill is painfully obvious from this solo.
You really need to checkout Austin's version from his channel . This version doesn't do it justice. Love Home Free, but the guys made me kinda cringe when they sang. Love this song when Austin did this with his pianist Sébastien

Please, Please, watch the video they call country TRIES opera! You will love it!
Austin studied Musical Theater. The performance he does as a solo is even more impressive.
Do not do yourself a disservice! …. Check out the video from his channel where he is solo, backed by piano.
He does a much better job on the one he does at home with piano. This is someone in the crowd filming it.
Just wanna echo the others. The version on Austins youtube is even better. Way better in my personal opinion.
I wonder if it ever makes the line up in current shows.
His solo on his AUSTIN BROWN channel…is Totally Better than this !
He is classically trained in musical theatre.
You really need to checkout Austin's version from his channel . This version doesn't do it justice. Love Home Free, but the guys made me kinda cringe when they sang. Love this song when Austin did this with his pianist Sébastien
Just think if this was not just a mere live recording on a cellphone.
Austin has shown us how it should sound in the version on his channel.
As good as that performance was, his solo on his channel is actually better. In my opinion, anyway.
