I think it’s less that Aura “regained” her powers 28 years ago, and more that she came crawling out of the hole she was hiding in after Himmel died. His legacy was so great that even in his old age, the very fact that he was alive kept demons in check.

Aura was basically one of the Demon King's generals. Frieren meant that, though Aura survived their battle, she lost most of her power/followers when they fought 80 years before. Since she "regained" her powers 28 years previous to this episode, it's implied that she laid low for 50 years after the Demon King's death and started rebuilding her army as soon as she found out Himmel had died. IMO, demons kind of remained low-key for the rest of Himmel's life because they didn't want him to come out of retirement, but as soon as he passed they regained a lot of their courage.
Honestly, just the fact that they eat humans is reason enough. The fact that they look and sound like humans only makes it eerie. A portrayal of demons in its purest form. I love that for this anime. We only usually get "demons" in anime that are just another race like elves and dwarves. But not here. Here they're just evolved man-eating monsters.
Yeah about Demons: there is no redemption. They are Monsters who prey on the other races and that's it. They are absolutely not capable of feeling emotions, so they are never able to actually change. You'll have a great example of that later on in the Manga with a Demon who wants to get along with Humans and to understand the feeling of Guilt. Spoilers: he never learns anything and only acts out of self preservation, like all Demons do.
I wouldn't say they have no emotions, rather they lack certain emotions. They can feel happiness, anger, fear, etc. But lack empathy, guilt, malice, etc.
nice that the show explained to us demons are monsters that evolved to speak and (some) evolved to look like humans, so that humans would drop their guard.
Himmel planning ahead for Frieren 😭 so sad.. Funny how they brought up Stark/Fern age just as Sam was discussing it lol. Not Frieren flexing on this lowtier enemy 😂
I like this epsiode alot, because it has a lot of informations about the conflict with demons. Liked your discussion and i think the authors wanted exactly that. We have to keep in mind in frierens mind they are all monsters, but between the memories we see that demons dont are unreasonable monsters. They think and they feel. They seem like human sociopaths, they lack human emotion and connection, like frieren said, because they dont have families and grow up alone. From Frierens perspectiv it seems very clear, but memories can be twisted if they have hateful feelings underneath. Frieren didnt even act like there was a possibility of "friendly" demons. The young demon even mentioned he wants peace and this daughter was simply a peace offer. In their logic this was a reasonable act, a new daughter for the lost daughter. They dont understand our ethic system of bad/good things. What is punishable and what is not. They are still intelligent and used what was useful for them to act against humanity. I think its not a suprise they seem very cold and emotionless...like frieren. The only difference is Frieren is an elf and elfs have families. So they have more emphaty and are closer to humans. I dont think this is only a black/white scenario like many claim, but an act of survival. The demon even said as frieren asked about the word mom. "A magical word, that stops you from killing us." Can be seen as manipulativ, but if i think Dwarfs, elves and humans kill demons. Its necessary to kill to survive. Every race has to fight for their survival. We as humans also exterminated every dangerous animal on the planet so we could progress and migrate to every corner on Earth. For me demons act cruel, but rational for survival.
18:40 - Seems to be self-preservation: I ate their daughter -> These people keep looking at me like they want to kill me -> If I give them another, maybe they won't want to kill me anymore.
You could be tempted to describe demons in this show as “always chaotic evil”, which is how they commonly are depicted in media. But I don’t think that’s really the case. It’s more of a good example of the trope “orange and blue morality”. The demons aren’t evil exactly, they don’t eat humans to BE evil or torment humans, that’s just happens to be their preferred food. They have some own concept of morality, but it is just alien and totally incompatible with ours. Couple that with a total lack of empathy and you have a creature you can communicate with, but never really reason with, because you lack any common ground of morality.
maybe in normal media, normal tv and movies, but in anime this is a rare take, almost every anime that features demons write them as just another race instead of evil man eating monsters that they were described irl
I love yall trying to reason why a demon does what it does, and that's exactly why a demon is such a successful predator of mankind, they count on us trying to come up with a reason for their actions, which makes us hesitate
I love Stark’s design as well Lady Samantha, it’s simple but fresh. His and Fren’s dynamic is so entertaining and adorable, it’s both sweet and, sour and spicy.
In this story Demons are sort of like a form of advanced parrots, fenerative ai, and angler fishes. They understand the function of human language and uses it as a tool to hunt humans. Predators, basically. I don't quite think of them as evil? But they are moreso just, yeah. Predators. They're just going to eat you in the end. You might say that pets like cats can be trained to not eat your pet hamster, but you're forgetting that demons here have the upper hand. THEY are our predators. We are not this one dominant species who can dictate their lives. A hamster can't train a cat into not eating it. And in the world of Frieren, we are the hamster.
