  • Created in the 70s, "I'll Build You a Rainbow" has been one of my favorite church musical productions. Back in the 80's, I recall the missionaries showing the film to our family with a huge white cloth and with the filmstrips "beeps" indicating that it's time to turn to the next image! :)
It was one of my earliest memories of feeling the Spirit. Listening to it now takes me back to those moments and the special feelings I felt then. This also gave me comfort when my mom died of an illness when I was 11 (1994). At that time, my eldest sister was serving a full-time mission. This also helped me when my older brother Christopher (Khiss) died in an accident in 2008. We used to watch this together. So listening to it now makes me feel that my mom is just watching over me. I know "Families Are Forever" and I'm grateful for having the gospel of Jesus Christ in my life. I got married in the temple in 2005 and is blessed with 3 wonderful kids. I'm now pregnant with our 4th child.
I made this video clip to keep the last memories I had with my mom.
I love you very much mama. We'll see each other again!

    I'll Build You A Rainbow
Words and Music by R. Scott Strong
    (Verse)
I'll build you a rainbow, way up high above.
Send down a sunbeam, plumb full of love.
Sprinkle down raindrops, teardrops of joy.
I'll be happy as spring-time, watchin' over my boy.
    (Narration)
Once there was a boy named Jami. He had some great friends, but his greatest was his mom. Not in some sissy way like that. She was just different than the other moms. While they were busy going to their fashion shows and bridge parties, she was home with him. They'd play in the backyard together, go on bike rides, have long talks, She was the best football player on the whole block. At leat that's what the other guys said. They really thought she was special. You know, they wished their moms were more like that.
Then one day Jamie was called home from school. There was a big white ambulance in the driveway. When Jamie walked into the front door, his dad was talking to the doctor, and Jamie was scared. They said he could only talk to his mom for a minute, and when he tiptoed into the bedroom and saw his mother lying on the bed, she smiled and whispered, "Hi, Big J." that's what she always called him, even though he wasn't very big. she said he had a big heart.
She said, "Jamie, I'm going away and I won't be coming back. I'm dying." Big tears came to Jamie's eyes and he said, "Mom, youjust can't die," And she said, "It's OK Babe, there's no regrets. I've been with you more in eleven years than most moms are with their boys in a whole life time." He said, "I know mom, but you just can't die, youjust can't" And she said, "Jamie, there's a secret. It's a special secret, and I never want you to forget it...Families are forever, and even though you won't see me, I'll still be there watching overyou and waiting for you." And he said, "But mom, if I can't see you, well then, how will I know you're there?" She thought a minute, and then she smiled and answered..."
She kissed him, closed her eyes, and she was gone. As Jamie and his dad stood in the driveway watching the ambulance drive away, his dad broke down and started to cry. They hugged each other real tight and Jamie felt his dad's teardrops on his own cheeks and cried too. Then he remembered the secret and he looked up and sure enough, there it was, right over their house, a big rainbow, just like she said. And he said, "Dad, dad, it's alright...Families are forever."
    (Verse)
I'll build you a rainbow, way up high above.
Send down a sunbeam, plumb full of love.
Sprinkle down raindrops, teardrops of joy.
I'll be happy in heaven, watchin' over my boy.

I sang this a lot in church. I don't know how I did it without crying every time. I had a missionary write me a note one time with the song written on the envelope. when my mother passed a couple of years ago there was a double rainbow that night. she is with me always.

Thank you so much for uploading this. I have been searching for this for nearly 30 years. It reminds me of my Dad who was killed in a car accident and I got injured. Every time I see a rainbow I smile.... I can now finally play this for my beautiful wife and daughter and share my memories with thrm... Thank you once again.

I was touch by this song and film when the missionaries were teaching our family in the 1980's. it was an inspiration. we were baptized with a rainbow in the sky and every time we saw a rainbow, it reminds us of our baptism. Thanks you for uploading. it was shown to us those years with a projector and a white blanket as projector screen.

Me too…the power of this song losing my mom at age 7…then losing my sister and she gave me the rainbow and everything in this song before saying goodbye to her…I never told anyone else but my sister knew and hours before she passed…she sent me my rainbow, sprinkles of rain drops and open the sky…never in my life would I ever imagined losing my sister but she also gave me spiritual message minutes before having to say goodbye to her…gosh I miss her & our mom. Anyway, this song will never be the same w/ loss of my big sister.💙💙💙
