Jeep Avenger Blends Iconic Styling and Capability in a New Urban-Ready SUV
The all-new 2023 Jeep Avenger represents a milestone for the iconic off-road brand as its first fully electric model. Despite its eco-friendly powertrain and compact dimensions aimed at urban environments, the Avenger's distinctive design and improved capability cement its place in the Jeep lineup.
At first glance, the Avenger's blocky exterior styling, seven-slot grille, and familiar Jeep design cues make it instantly recognizable. The exterior shape not only connects it visually to other Jeep models but also provides key functional benefits. Short front and rear overhangs, boxy fender flares, and a minimal approach angle enable the Avenger to clear obstacles off-road and handle urban potholes with ease.
Jeep designers opted for a front end lacking any grille openings since the EV has no radiator. The grille slots are intricately detailed to remain an integral part of the Avenger's identity. At 4.08 meters long, 1.82 meters wide, and 1.82 meters high, the Avenger's footprint is well-suited for navigating crowded city streets.
Ground clearance measures 200mm in standard trim, extending to 230mm underneath the battery pack. Combined with the Avenger's optimized approach and departure angles, this gives it respectable capability away from paved roads. The Avenger's wading depth of 400mm and 200kg roof load capacity further improve its adventure potential.
The Avenger’s interior emphasizes space, versatility, and storage for active urban lifestyles. Rear seat legroom exceeds most competitors thanks to the bench being mounted higher. Wider tailgate access makes loading cargo a breeze. Intelligent storage solutions abound throughout the cabin, with spots to stash phones, tablets, water bottles, and other daily carry items. Front seats feature manual or power adjustment.
Motivation comes from a permanent magnet electric motor producing 154hp and 260Nm of torque. Power is stored in a 54kWh battery pack comprised of 17 modules and 204 cells. Jeep estimates the driving range at 249 miles based on WLTP testing. With 100kW DC fast charging, owners can add 140 miles of range in 10 minutes or charge from 20-80% in just 24 minutes.
Jeep engineered the Avenger on an adapted version of Stellantis’ CMP/eCMP platform. Extensive modifications were made, including redesigned crash structures and reinforced body shell to maintain safety while minimizing size, altered inner wings to accommodate larger tires and suspension travel, and a raised rear bench for extra legroom. The electrical architecture represents the latest technology, with new motor, battery, and inverter.
The Avenger ushers in the next generation of Jeep city vehicles. While right at home navigating urban environments, design elements and improved ground clearance help the Avenger retain Jeep brand authenticity. The all-electric powertrain provides strong performance along with the advantages of zero emissions and low operating costs. With the Avenger soon hitting the streets, Jeep is charging ahead into an electrified future without leaving its roots behind.
