Thank you for your consistently great content. I can literally remember where I was the first time I heard tunes from Can't Buy a Thrill, during spring of 1973, but thanks to you and UA-cam I have just discovered Yacht Rock Episode 1 thru 12, from a couple of decades ago! Face hurts from smiling!
Donald Fagen The Nightfly is one of the most important so called "yacht rock" album of all times. Then self titled America album ...the first 4 from Gino Vannelli....but there are so many pthers..Player...Ambrosia..Toto...Doobies...Todd Rundgren...Wild Cherry....Paul Davies....and the new artists State Cows...Thundercat...Vulfpeck....it's one of the freshest and more evolute genre around
Steely Dan was the nexus. Michael Mcdonald, Jeff Porcaro, David Paich all got their start with SD. And Boz Scaggs Lowdown, Paich and the Porcaros, what a great song and album.
Heh, love your lively intro! 😁 And, I frigg'n LOVE when I hear your doggies chewing their little toys when you are trying to be so passionate about audio! 😃 Oh, and MAN, those commercials at the end, F'n *FUNNY!!!* I swear Tim, you are getting to the point where I will watch you read the telephone directory! PLEASE keep this creative groove of yours going! 👍 And yeah, sure, Yacht Rock, why not... BUT... I will tell you one thing, if I may... I would honestly rather rip my own NutZ off than be forced to listen to Michael McDonald! *SERIOUSLY!* That voice literally makes me want to kill... all up in the high register, all the notes sound the same, this high pitched wailing. GOD, no! Sorry, just had to get that out of the way... 😊 Honestly though, if there is ONE voice I categorically hate with all passion, it's his. Okay, on to more of a positive tone... I happen to have some kind of high fidelity pressing of the same Boz Scaggs album. I think it was one of the first albums I bought, probably nearly 40 years ago. I hafta check, but I THINK it is a MFSL pressing maybe? I also have the Christopher Cross album. To be totally honest, I haven't listened to either of these in probably over 30 years. Didn't CC do 'Sailing'...? That was a rather pretty song IIRC. And yep... I have Toto IV. And YES, 'Africa' is a lot better. Ah, STYX! Wow... I know they are known for their excellent Power Ballads, but I guess I think of them overall more so as Prog. But yeah, lovely album. And pretty much, the only Power Ballads that I would ever listen to would only be from STYX. My personal favourite album by them by far is Equinox. Tim, if you have not heard Equinox by them, you absolutely HAVE to check that out. Find it, Buy it, trust me! The sound quality on an early pressing is quite good too. I must say that this album for some strange reason, has always had a special way in that it creates this amazing euphoric mood. Don't think I have another album quite like it. You *HAVE* to get it! Would you classify Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty as Yacht Rock? Actually, I must admit, I do not know WHY, but there is just something absolutely Magical about that album. I don't know what it is, and I never sit down and listen to this type or Genre. But, when I hear Baker Street or Woman or Home and Dry, I F'n SWEAR this truly magical feeling comes over me, almost like nostalgia, but there is no special event or time connected to it. Out of my over 2600 albums on vinyl, I cannot think of any other album that has this strange effect on me. Damndest thing...
You always deliver with such good topics! The hat a perfect complement, the dog, and the commercials we’ve all grown to Love! How is the H.H. Scott? Happy Holidays Thank You
Honourable mentions for Airplay, Bugatti & Musker, Ed Motta, Lee Ritenour, Nielsen / Pearson, Pages, Randy Goodrum, Sneaker, Eric Tagg & Young Gun Silver Fox.
You have to get the trifecta of pablo cruise. Very well recorded. A place in the sun, world's away, in part of the game. You are missing so much. Everything that bill schnee touches turns to gold.
Paul Davis produced a great yacht rock record for Elton John’s drummer Nigel Olsson in the late ‘70s that included the hit “Dancing Shoes.” Pablo Cruz’s version of “I Go to Rio” is so good.
Thanks for the heads up on Daylight Again. Check out Curtis Brothers Seven League Boots - recorded with Buckinghams and Nicks - for the Southern Cross prototype. Also, would put Supertramp up there too ...
Hi Tim I’ve a few of these silk degrees ,cross , toto , holmes, doobies , of course it wasn’t yacht rock at the time ..John mayall has dabbled a bit in the genre .. I need to give that csn album a listen .. cheers tim👍
I would include Ambrosia on that list. I recently saw It 50 Years ago A Beatles Tribute with Christopher Cross, David Pack of Ambrosia among the performers. I have Christopher 5 times already but when David performed the Ambrosia songs like You're the Biggest of Me and How Much I Feel he sounded so good. Just my two cents. Great video.
Nice listing Tim...right on...hey sometimes a little Kenny Rankin, Stephen Bishop, James Taylor, Jimmy Webb or Carole King could be just be just what the doctor ordered.
David Paich and Jeff Porcaro played on the album. Mike Porcaro toured with them in 1974. Same year, Jeff toured with Steely Dan, 50 years ago. Yacht On!
I agree that Steely Dan is not Yacht Rock generally, but Peg is definitely a Yacht Rock standard. As is Billy Joel's Big Shot. And how about Bob James' instrumental Angela?
Great video, Tim as always! Lots of artists/bands fit this genre, even if for short periods. James Taylor, and of course his buddy, J.D. Souther. Stephen Bishop, Michael Murphey (Wildfire). Where does this genre bleed over into artists like Linda Ronstadt, Phoebe Snow, Randy Newman, Jackson Browne, Chicago (Wishing You Were Here and some of their later syrupy-stuff) and even to some degree, the Eagles? They often had songs/LPs that fit this mold quite nicely. How about one-hit wonder Sanford-Townsend Band "Smoke From A Distant Fire" or Dave Loggins-"Please Come To Boston" or Dean Friedman with "Ariel". I'm certainly old enough to remember when Styx's "Come Sail Away" was all over the airwaves in 1977. Wishing you and your wife a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Been listening to that Christopher Cross album alot lately - has some magnificent music and some brilliant backing vocals by Michael McDonald. And love that CS&N album 👍
Hey Tim...so how does Michael McDonald feel about this LOL. I am looking forward to the film. These are the sound of the 70s all these take me back to the summers at the local pool riding my BMX bike and playing baseball. All great stuff !!! But yes Steely Dan can fit into yacht rock playlist.
I can understand why Donald Fagen would not want to be associated with the genre. I think Steely Dan is one of the the greatest classic rock bands of all time. However, "Hey Nineteen" is the epitome of yacht rock. R&B based, smooth as glass, it is definitely, positively, without a doubt yacht rock.
This is another one of those reinvention attempts by the music industry marketing people. What used to be labeled as AOR/MOR is now yacht rock. Just like how the japanese reinvent their 80’s pop into City Pop, which by the way sounds like US fusion jazz from the 70’s & 80’s. Btw Tim good choice on your list of top ten. I have all of them except for that Jay Ferguson lp. If I may be so bold as to add a few more from the top of my head, Nicolette Larson-Lotta love, Hall & Oates-I can’t go for that, Player-Baby come back, Gerry Raferty-Baker street. A pity they make music like these anymore 😢
The genre of yacht rock did not come from music industry marketing people. It came from this early youtube series... ua-cam.com/play/PLeYsjZ9XP_bQHak6Dr_BEJx8UgijPnMv5.html
Hi, I was reviewing some comments I made last night and realized the ones I made to you were a bit snarky (probably due to a few too many pre-holiday cocktails), and I would like to apologize. But if you click on the link provided and watch the videos I think you'll realize the term "yacht rock" was not originally part of a marketing campaign. However, once the term was coined, and gained some momentum/popularity then yes, definitely marketing people latched on to it as a way to sell certain types of music. Cheers!
How can one talk about Yacht Rock without including Jimmy Buffett? Personally, I was burned out on listening to his music from my college roommates playing it all the time.
Haven't read through comments yet but have you caught the Fantastic MAX HBO Yacht Rock documentary just released this weekend!? Absolutely great. Sent Mazzy a heads up. PS, just heard your opening comment. Hey, I was thinking about you!

Player, Ambrosia... love me some yacht rock and I agree! Steely Dan and Donald Fagen are a musical genre unto themselves. 😊
Gerry Rafferty- City to City
Oh yeah... Not a fan of the Genre, but there is something truly Magical about this album!

The Nightfly is one of the finest albums ever produced. Jeff Porcaro, Larry Carlton, so tasty.
Thanks for doing this, really enjoyed this segment! My favorite genre next to Jazz. 🙏🏻🎧
Steely Dan was the nexus. Michael Mcdonald, Jeff Porcaro, David Paich all got their start with SD. And Boz Scaggs Lowdown, Paich and the Porcaros, what a great song and album.
I agree. It's why I can't completely separate the Dan from the Yacht Rock genre.
Some great songs from that genre. Gotta go setting sail , this retired sailor is ready to get underway. Take care art

It's a fine presentation. ❤ In the back of my mind lurks Neil Larsen (Buzz Feiten) and maybe Hall & Oates. 🤔
Ned Doheny - Hard Candy (1976). Amazing album!!!!
Superior "yacht rock" for sure.
Absolutely there are Steely Dan tunes that qualify.
And Al Stewart, Little River Band, Robbie Dupree, Bertie Higgins…a lot of one-offs qualify.
You have to get the trifecta of pablo cruise. Very well recorded. A place in the sun, world's away, in part of the game. You are missing so much. Everything that bill schnee touches turns to gold.
For me the ultimate Yaught Rock tune is Hall & oates 'Wait For me' from the otherwise fairly dismal X-Static album. Absolute anthem!
Paul Davis produced a great yacht rock record for Elton John’s drummer Nigel Olsson in the late ‘70s that included the hit “Dancing Shoes.” Pablo Cruz’s version of “I Go to Rio” is so good.

thats cool, ididnt know about that yacht rock doc! and some good pics in there tim!
Jimmy Buffet - a yacht industry

Hi Rob, good to hear from you and thank you for watching! I need to check out your '25 Vinyl Tag...
Enjoyed the post credits...
Steely Dan couldn't be more Yacht Rock and the documentary painstakingly breaks down why.

Whoa...almost forgot Bread!
CSN Daylight Again doesn’t have a bad song. And some of their best harmonies ever. One of my favs start to finish.
don't forget Diamond Girl by the ultimate in yacht rock Seals & Croft!
David Paich and Jeff Porcaro played on the album. Mike Porcaro toured with them in 1974. Same year, Jeff toured with Steely Dan, 50 years ago. Yacht On!

@jeffreylind3739 I've always loved Pieces of April written and sung by Dave Loggins, as well as Three Dog Nights excellent version.
Been listening to that Christopher Cross album alot lately - has some magnificent music and some brilliant backing vocals by Michael McDonald. And love that CS&N album 👍
Starbuck moonlight feels right lp is great yacht pop

I almost unsubscribed when I saw your Styx pick 😳grand illusion is a perfect album
Controversial I admit
I don't think anyone is saying Fagen solo albums are yacht rock. The doc wanted to talk to him about Steely Dan.
I need some of those labels for your jackets where can I get those?
Here you go - koeppeldesign.com/products/catalog-cards
Agreed! Steely Dan does not apply. Peace out!
Like minds…..
👍👍😎✌️🤟

Hard to deny……
One big trope of yacht rock is dudes having a mid-life crisis. That's exactly what the song (Hey Nineteen) is all about.
Little River Band!

Do your research! Paul Davis died of a heart attack. He survived a shooting. The chewy toys in the background is real pro.
I stand corrected. Thanks for the info!
You don’t have any Kenny Loggins?
Wow! How about Loggins & Messina?
A hole in my collection!
How can one talk about Yacht Rock without including Jimmy Buffett? Personally, I was burned out on listening to his music from my college roommates playing it all the time.
I respect your opinion, but Jay Ferguson is not considered rock yacht.
Styx??? Yuck 🤮
Little river band had a ton of yacht rock songs
@@nelsonmaud1 so did air supply

Styx is yacht rock but Steely Dan isn't
Styx is not yacht rock.
You have a little squeak in your voice . lol.
Stop it - Steely Dan is NOT Yacht Rock - you know better
On the blacken wall
He does it all
He thinks he’s died and gone to heaven
My point exactly, not sure you watched!
