As an Audio Engineer myself, I gotta say that's not a bad choice of microphone. The only thing you're going to need to do eventually is do some acoustic treatment of your space to make Audio Quality that much better. If you eventually ever want to upgrade your interface, maybe a 2-channel for your weekly show with Paul, I'd recommend the Focusrite 2i2. I think it's about $150 US at Sweetwater and I've had the first generation for a few years and they released gen 2 last year. It's a great piece of gear for the price. Also pickup a second AT2020 for the show too. Also a beneficial piece of kit to add to your setup would be a compressor, either software or Hardware based to help improve on keeping volume levels consistent.

Studio 7-22 i had a focusrite solo 2nd gen and that was a nightmare. My pc (windows 10) did not like the focusrite. I had lag issues and crackling noises. I returned and got a new one to get the same problems. I ended up giving it to my brother and now he has the issues while I have a behringer mixer board with 5 inputs and EQ for treble mid and lows for the same price as the focusrite.

Get some Monoprice studio monitors! They come in an 8-inch woofer option or a 5-inch. I use the 8-inch monitors with the Behringer UMC-404HD and they are accurate, clear and a pleasure for the price, considering they're the same speakers as some that cost twice as much.

Rather than the AT2020, since you're just going to use it for podcasting, voice chat, and any of the sort, a Marantz MPM 1000 is going to save you 50 bucks (without sacrificing sound quality and both have really low self noise levels) which you can throw into your expenditures for an audio interface that has a quieter preamp like a Zoom U22 or a 2nd gen Scarlet Solo or, my personal pick, an ART USBMix.
As for the monitors, the Yamaha HS8 is your bare minimum. Not in price but in sound quality.

  • @Progster0192

All you need now is a cheap compressor. I'm currently using an sm7b with inline mic preamp for both gaming and vocal recordings. The soundcard "presonus 22vsl" comes with built in software with zero latency compressor, gate, EQ, high-pass filter, which you can chose to just listen to or send/post. So for a streamer it's a very good soundcard since you can use compression and EQ right from the interface itself. *For monitors you can't go wrong with KRK rokit 5 g3. Great value and good sound. Another good value monitor is M-Audio BX5!*

Mackies!!! Mackies are great studio monitors that are also very cheap. The CR5BT's come in at a little over $200, 5 inch monitors that also have a bluetooth function, allowing you to have your desktop audio wired in, but your phone audio come in over bluetooth. (i use this function for playing games with my own personal playlist streaming from my phone) I definitely recommend you look at the various sizes mackie offers, as they have 4 inch and 3 inch ones that cost significantly less!!!!!!!!!

I picked up the RODE NT-USB Mic for about $170 a while back. I liked 1 price stop. No USB interface to buy, no mixer, and no stand if you are okay with the tri-pod stand. It sounds amazing and also has built in monitoring on the mic itself. So I can connect my headphones directly to the mic and listen to an adjustable side tone and desktop audio all at the same time.

  • @AndroidG13

Great job Kyle. If you are going to leave your setup as it is now, I'd recommend putting a few squares of acoustic foam panels. First directly on the wall behind the mic, then adjacently to that first square, to break up the solid surface of the wall, and thusly, reducing the echo-y sound you get from recording. Or even a foam isolator that you could put right on the mic stand right behind the microphone. The point is that sound wave reflections bouncing off the walls will be picked up by the microphone, putting a kind of reverb or echo on to the recording. Also, despite how the shape might suggest it's use, the microphone is directional, so its important which way it faces. If you look closely at the microphone, you'll see inside it a circular golden colored object. Thats what is known as the condenser, that part that has the membrane that is pushed back and forth by sound waves, thus creating a low powered voltage. You want that pointed directly toward you or the sound source you want to record. Right now, I could tell, even if not viewing the video, that you have the microphone positioned far away from you. Furthermore, the closer the microphone is to your face, the less gain you'll need to apply, which will reduce the pickup of ambient noises in the room, like how we can clearly hear your case fans during your comparison. If I could offer a suggestion, I'd actually mount the microphone stand on either the left or right edge of your desk, placed further toward the front of the desk. That way, when you are recording, you can pull the mic right up to your face or just below it, about chin height or just off center to the right or left of your mouth. If positioned well, it shouldn't interfere with your gaming, being able to reach the keyboard or view your monitors without hinderance. Then, when you are not using it, retract it, collapsing the mic boom, and just letting it sit there until you need it again. It may not be as aesthetically pleasing to you, but your viewers' ears will thank you... and you'll stop getting those complaints that the sound is not loud enough... plus you have the same problem with Awesome Hardware... You'd have a much better, clearer sound if you had those condenser mics closer to your faces. But if you still want the "we're on TV" look, with no visible mics, either just get shotgun mics which are designed to pick up sound from out of frame because they are highly directional with an extremely focused pick up patterns, or just get lapel mics. You guys put so much gain on your mikes for the Awesome Hardware, I can always hear a low drone noise coming from the computers..."wooah woooah woooah" ... Sorry, but I'm into audio the same way you and Paul are into computers lols. Anyway, no hate, just some suggestions, love the channel

I'd recommend anything from the Yamaha HS series. They have a fantastic flat balance for audio production and for gaming, the audio is well rounded and the high end frequency response brings out footsteps and the like without dampening out the rest of the audio.

Just have to say how much I appreciate you going the extra mile on your advertisements. The humor makes them much more enjoyable to sit through. As far as entry level powered studio monitors go, JBL LSR305 can be picked up between $250 - $300 a pair. Or if you want something a little more expensive, Yamaha HS5's run about $400 a pair for the 5".

KRK Rokit series or JBL 3 series studio monitors sound great! get the companion sub if you want big boom! Remember, 1/4" to XLR Male cables to get from the USB interface to the studio monitors, and extra XLR cables if you get the companion sub. Also, studio isolation pads to keep the monitors from coupling to the desk and an isolation pad for the sub to keep it from rumbling the floor more than it needs to.

  • @danielmullins9953

I have KRK Rokit 5 G3's and they sound amazing I would really recommend buying a pair seeing as they come at a relatively cheap cost. However if your room is pretty small and you have neighbours maybe get the Rokit 4's. I'm assuming your studio monitors would be close to the wall so you will need to get monitors that are front ported instead of rear ported because that will create artificial low frequencies and you won't here the true quality of the audio you are listening to. Unfortunately having your desk against the wall limits your options but these monitors are easily the best budget range ones in my opinion. Also if you are looking for stands I'd recommend getting the IsoAcoustics ISO-L8R155 stands, I already recommended them to one half of the DJs called Mr.Belt & Wezol and he seemed to love them because you can choose what height or angle you want the speakers at.

I have that same interface. I'm really happy with it but I wish it had a built in PAD, because I have a tube guitar preamp that is very high output and makes the interface preamps clip. If you're not doing any musical recordings I suggest the Edifier R1800T III semi-pro monitor set, they're really musical and you can use them to get a really good vocal mix.

The comparison between the headset and the At202 is like comparing apples and oranges, and neither came anywhere close to whatever microphone you use on your camera to record the audio for the video. If you were closer to the AT2020 it would probably sound a lot better, or turn up he gain on the UMC22, but then the noise floor will also get amplified. Maybe relocating the boom to the corner front of the desk may be better ?

I currently use the Neweer N700 Condenser Mic with the Blue Icicle and can honestly say it was one of the best solutions for much better mic quality without spending as much as you did on your setup. But I don't have any ability to add monitor speakers with the blue Icicle. I like the look of the AT 2020 more than the Neweer mic.

I've been wanting to upgrade my mic from a blue snowball. I was looking at the at2020, but after watching this decided to go with the gear in this video (well the gear I didn't already have). The main upside I'm looking forward to is being able to use a xlr cable and position my mic both at my desk and at my couch depending on the stream. Before I had to use a headset for playing from the couch while streaming which doesn't sound great only because I can't get my USB mic to plug in due to distance. The instrument in will also be good for when I eventually start recording songs.

highly recommend the at2020. used it in the studio myself for many years. would recommend some small nearfield monitors. m audio studiophile monitors are a good choice especially in such a confined space as would be behringers equivalents. With the soundcard you have, you would need active monitors not passive so do some research into the $200 pricepoint active studio monitors. there is lots of great products to be had in this price range. I haven't needed to look recently but there are always bargains to be had. Do not get anything above 3" for woofer size as it would be wasted power and useless for your needs

Studio monitors: Mackie CR3 (or CR4) - not to bulky, great sound, they come in pair and have great connection types (balanced, unbalanced, front AUX and headphone jacks, and there's also a version with bluetooth). They are also 50W so they can get very loud. Technically they are called multimedia monitors, so they aren't 100% precise as real expensive studio monitors, but you aren't mixing tracks for Beyonce anyway.

Unless you're gonna put mounts on the wall you might not want to indulge in that but my beloved LSR305s are great, although being as close to the wall as your setup would have them placed would cause a lot of bass reverb. Syrincs M3-220 DT are great for the price you pay if you can manage to find them

Yamaha HS5's are really good for the price! If you don't mind the bigger size you can get the HS8's which have a bigger soundstage.

Studio monitors? Mackie MR mk3 series. More compact in design but still awesome.

Looks and sounds great, but what about background noises like gaming on a mechanical keyboard? Does the mic pick up those sounds?

The Presonus Eris E5's are great for a budget set of monitors, as well as the Yamaha HS5's.
If you want bass, KRK Rokit 5s are heavy in low end (but for me in a studio setting that's not good, they're too colored)
Going up to the Eris E8's or the HS8's is also a solid option for a broader frequency range, but they are 8 inch woofers so you'll be taking up a lot more space on the desk. Pair any of those speakers with the auralex monitor pads and you'll have a pretty solid audio setup. Just don't set them on their side because none of those monitors are made to be on their side, and as such will not function as intended.

I have been using A blue yeti for the past few years and I feel like the quality for nothing but a USB connection is pretty nice overall. Although I have been looking to maybe upgrade sometime in the future...

If you want an actually cheap and affordable mic, look at the Neewer NW800, it's a mic and the arm and pop filter for $50 total.

Honestly for studio monitors go with Yamaha or Krk rockits. Unless something better has been released in the last month those will be the best for the money especially used.
