Putin admires socialist economic ideals, but also seems to be very orthodox and russian nationalist, so Russia rn is more closer to the Russian Empire than the USSR.
Putin is basically economic-system agnostic, however he originally felt when he was younger. His goal is power, and while the soviet-style system had a LOT of advantages in being able to consolidate power for a leader and also show power on the world stage, he has mastered control of information which works wonderfully in a capitalist society. Add in that capitalism ends up ultimately being an advantage economically, there is no reason for him to rock the boat. The oligarchic construction of society also ensures he doesn't have too many people he needs to befriend, bribe, or get rid of at the top who help him control everything. Soviet style socialism had way more party functionaries you had to please or dispose of and was cutthroat in a way that doesn't benefit him.
Russia is neither socialist nor nationalist, rather a kind of centrism with a more or less authoritarian bias that tries to connect the unconnected and the oligarchic economic system. Nationalism in Russia with an emphasis on the tsarist past, namely Russian, and social nationalism with the republics inside and the Soviet past atmosphere, disappeared in Russia somewhere in the early 2010s, when nationalist parties began to be eliminated, and marches were prohibited due to the strengthened article for "ethnic strife". Plus, based on who mainly votes for Putin (often they are called red conservatives, which are nostalgic for the USSR), the importation of migrants (even Russians who receive citizenship by family reunification, i.e. ethnic Russians who were scattered throughout the republics during the USSR, sometimes become citizens much-much slowly than working migrants from central Asia who decide to stay) as well as parasitism on the Soviet the term "friendship of peoples, strength in unity" and so on, plus the fear of the authorities of the separatism of the Caucasus (of which they turn a blind eye to what is happening there), does not allow us to call him a nationalist who, as an example, were even before the revolution.
Yes. I get sick of the media banging on about how he wants to restore the USSR. He doesn't. His vision for Russia is the Orthodox Holy Russia of before 1917, and it saddens me that the major news outlets and political figures are still stuck in this Cold War mindset.
Glad we now know who Putin is. That clears that up. Now I wish we could figure out who the unnamed hero was that donated 200 kidneys to the local hospital.

Why do KGB agents make such good taxi drivers?

Makes me think of the earliest "Life of Boris" YT channel videos; when he did Gopnik taxi driver gameplay commentary - later incorporated into his own "Slav Superstar" game.

That would be fascism.
He is just an oligarch...
