  • As players prepare themselves for the upcoming entry in the Under Night In-Birth series, it's natural for someone to wonder, what makes a player good at this game? This video clip from my stream contains my brief, surface-level answer to this question.

aren't there a good amount of characters that also reduce their opponent to a "human" in uni? like merkava worm setups, seth mixups or vatista IOH come to mind

To some degree, yes, but absolutely not as widespread to what Guilty Gear and BlazBlue have. I think the only thing Seth has that outright mortalises people are his unblockable setups, and the potency of that will be greatly reduced in UNI2. Of course, not to say that blink mixups aren't hard to deal with, but those have countermeasures within reach. Vatista and Merkava mixups are good examples though, as well as Hilda 50/50. But again, the prevalence of these is not as much as in BBCF or in GGXXACPR/Xrd Rev 2, and for these games there are several characters with looping okizeme that leads to a hard-to-block mixup, or even an unblockable.

@@kurushiidrive there aren't that many unblockables in the gg aside from the zato UB or johnnys Mist but they require specific setups. The most typical mixup in gg is the low airdash 50/50 which nigh universal but it and many other setups can be fuzzy blocked(similarly to how many uni players use OSs on defense) but oftentimes it can look alot more brutal due to ggs high dmg output where a uni hit may do 1/3 to 1/2 life. In BBCF many overheads are reactable but the scale is a bit crazy; you can go from someone doing basic strike throw to a character like Valkenhayn doing unfuzzyable safe jumping high low 50/50s. But i think that stuff like merkavas worms that can setup crossups that break crossup protection into repeated 50/50s are just as fucked up as any situation you can find in other anime games. I just found it a little disingenious especially since even in the clip its even said that players will just present options for players to deal with; what separates a high level player in all fighting games is simply awareness of given scenarios i think and the wisdom to act on that knowledge for the results the player values.

I understand there aren't many unblockables, I wanted to group together the number of cases for which hard-to-block mixups OR unblockables existed. I could have made that more explicit, sorry.
To be clear, I never downplayed the potency of things like Merkava mixups, I'm just saying something like that is not as pervasive in the game (i.e., the relative ratio of characters with access to such mixup) compared to what you would see in the other two anime games I mentioned. And for the record, if you're getting more damage from a mixup of that kind, that very much does have an effect on how the potency is viewed, as well as on the psychological aspect of being put in that situation. It's why when Carmine's damage off of j.A fuzzy was initially nerfed in 1.00 of UNICLR (before being reverted in 1.03), it was a big deal for the character.
I don't believe what I said in the clip reflected disingenuity, and I tried to add nuance in specifying knowing one's own character very well for dealing with things in UNI. This being said, I can't really tell if you're rebuking anything I said, since based on your last sentence, you seem to agree on one of the requisites for high-level play I mentioned.

@@kurushiidrive its more of a distinction. In GG generally its a bit more difficult to convert but if you can convert the reward tends to be higher compared to uni (even on oki), i dont think the mixup is too too dissimilar to what ive seen in other anime games, speaking for a high level gear players perspective. The general sentiment of the clip is great and i thought it was really good explanation of that difference between "miming" high level concepts and actually applying them! grinding uni since the announcement of the new uni update and rollback and i hope more good stuff like this comes out. just thought the level of mixups wasn't too different compared to other anime games
