There's a reason "Puzzle" is the most played song on my Spotify playlist for over a year now!!! Band-Maid announced yesterday that they are offering vinyls for New Beginning, Brand New Maid, Just Bring It, World Domination, and Conqueror, starting November 3rd. I've bought their cds, dvds, blu-rays and the vinyl for "about Us", yet I haven't owned any device that will play 'em for years, lol!!! Anyway, enjoyed your reaction, keep it up 👍👍🤘🤘🤘
You took a magnificent song and performances and amped up our appreciation of this astoundingly talented band even higher. My sincere thanks Wave. Incredible.
Puzzle was one of the songs that made me into a full-blown ride-or-die Band-Maid fan. (Back before this video got blocked from YT.) Kanami just goes HAM from start to finish. Akane goes HAM from start to finish. When they pulled this out for the August(?) 2020 livestream, I just about lost my mind.
That idea of guitar shredding at the background, always seemed very interesting for me, almost magical. I remember that once I caught something like this in one the Metallica's songs, but then I forgot where, and was searching for it in vain. And then I hear BAND-MAID, and Kanami is doing it all the time! That's the level of musicianship I've never encountered before...
Dear Wave! Greetings from Shizuoka (you know? That place dominated by Mount Fuji!)! Warming up more and more to your reactions! I am no pundit or professional musician, but simple facts should explain a few things: Kanami has a very solid classical education and composes all her tunes on the piano first, which explains why she can turn at will a song/music into what I may dare call "symphonic rock", and consequently she will never play the same thing twice. It is just in her mode. To go with that, Akane and Misa had both a classical and jazz education and contribute their own music to Kanami's proposals, ending up into a triple symphony! On top of that you add vocals, lyrics and rhythm guitar! Many a respected reactor has pointed out that they are not individually the best at their own respective roles, but they all agree that as a group/band/ensemble they are unbeatable! Never mind the unbelievable output and constant progress! Where are hey going to take us to? If they can already appeal us to unnumbered listenings, we may as well attempt to understand the reason of their appeal or we will end up as stupid slaves ( I do not mind it, though!)! Looking forward to your next reactions, Mate! Best regards, Robert-Gilles
The thing about Kanami being a musical genius is because she was trained in piano at a very young age and she indulges herself with classical music. She knows her music theory despite being self taught in guitar. Her mind has been influenced to the great classical composers such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and more. Additionally her influences come from various guitar geniuses as well, Santana, Steve Vai, and more. Add all into that, she pretty much created her own style now. ^^ *note: she was a struggling singer-songwriter before Miku discovered her.
@@chalfo They call her "daughter from the box," which in Japanese means that she lived a life protected from all troubles. Normal family, relatively rich. All her bandmates have divorced parents, some experienced financial difficulties in childhood, etc.
I've seen it elsewhere that Kanami may be a musical savant. If so it would explain the great difference between her stage and off stage prescence and her band mates' reference to her as an air head. That she certainly is not. In addition to a degree in economics she is very technically aware having demonstrated for PRS with commentary and for Moreland pedals, on both occasions speaking with clarity and authority. It would also explain the growing complexity of her music and her non stop work on stage above and beyond what would be normally needed. And not to forget her classical piano skills.
So what you're saying is that this song has many little pieces to that all fit together in an intricate and specific way. Kinda like a........ PUZZLE? :) And yeah, MISA doesn't really have any standout parts to this but, if you pay attention to her lines you'll notice for much of it she's either matching Akane's notes or she's mirroring Miku's lines with a little twist. Honestly, the 2 parts that always strike me in this song are Miku's back up vocals that you noticed the high/low/high on and the trill or whatever it's called that Kanami does to match Saiki's notes during the chorus. But yeah, this is a consistent top 5 band maid song for me.
From Japan I am looking forward to your reaction every time. This song, Puzzle is a love song that you fall in love with the puzzle piece the moment you first meet it, and the last lyrics are that you can't forget the other person even if it doesn't work. Even for me as a Japanese, the lyrics are wonderful.
It's also interesting to compare Kanami's piano version of Yolo to their MV of Yolo. It's interesting wondering about Kanami's writing progression/process.
When Miku found Kanami it was a video on YT of her playing and singing, Kanami has described herself as a singer/song writer before Band-Maid. I don't know if Kanami has ever mentioned her musical education other than she started playing piano at an early age, but as to if she has had formal music theory classes, I've not seen any information on that. She may have learned when they first started and all the songs where written for them, she may have worked with the composers and learned from them.
Mincho first sat at the piano at age three. She began formal lessons at age five. She picked up the guitar in high school just to be "cool" with her classmates. Something many of us can relate to. Sacramento loves Mincho.
Yes, it's a bit strange-looking, that the most gifted composer in the band does not have a formal musical education. Akane and MISA have, both have attended the Tokyo School of Music. Miku does not, she was planning an idol singer career, and she wanted to be a performer rather than a musician as such. Saiki also does not have a musical education, she was also planning her life differently: an actress, a dancer, a singer. Kanami has majored in economics. I think she never attended any music school. So, it's even more amazing what a long way they have all come. Kanami was learning voraciously from everybody who would cross her way. And she still does.
@@michaelpalmer3717 Watanabe, Yu tutored Kanami in 2012-2013 (not known after BM) graduated from Barkley music school former guitarist/Ibanez endorsee owner/instructor of a guitar school chain "guitar works" owner/builder of a guitar maker "AddicTone"
Puzzle live and acoustic just shows the depth of Kanami's incredible talent. PRS must give her a signature model. Not to lessen the huge talent of all band members but Kanami IS Band Maid.
A mention is due to Saiki's wonderful breath control, in both versions. There's a fast, unceasing flow of words with no huge intakes of breath, yet no moments of the breath running out at the ends of long (and these are Long) phrases, not a shake to be heard. It's like the apotheosis of every voice teacher's instruction to "let the breath drop in." On second thought, it's more impressive in the full-band performance because of the amount of air she has to move to get that power. Astonishingly smooth and precise.
That remarkable breath control crops up elsewhere in Japanese rock. Think Wowaka in "Unknown Mother Goose" or Yuko doing "Rokuchounen to Ichiya Monogatari". Those are both vocaloid tunes and you think "Yeah, Hatsune Miku can do those machine-gun-rapid lyrics 'cause she's software and doesn't *have* to breathe" but when live bodies punch out those lyrics at that pace it's flat amazing. :D
This is a very sad song. Many of the parts you are interested in are for expressing emotions, not for skills but for a bitter memory. Using music to express emotions, this is the most favorite part of the songs in the previous period of BAND-MAID. Their skills are very good, and please feel the emotion you want to convey, even if you don’t understand the lyrics. (Sorry I used the translator this message )
Listening to a BandMaid song is like reading a Thomas Pynchon novel. It is so layered that it takes multiple readings -- or in this case, listenings, to fully comprehend what is going on. EDIT should have added : in both cases the be extra effort is worth it
Now Wave, you are ready for Puzzle live, acoustic version along with Anemone! It’s just Saiki and Kanami! You would have to react to both! Really good!!
In reply to your question about whether this song is on Band Maid Prime, so you can watch Kanami's part: yes and no. There is no solo video yet with the camera angles. However, the full show from which this video is taken is there, so technically, you could go and watch it over there (that's the Studio Coast one). Also, they will release the five previous album (before Unseen World) on vynil in November. Great breakdown of the two faces of this awesome song ^^
Second this! Love that song. Kanami’s outro solo there is handsdown among the most emotional pieces of music I’ve ever heard. There’s just something incredible about her ability to come up with solos that not just compliment but elevate the entire song to the next level of emotional intensity. That solo and the daydreaming one are easily among my all time fav solos.
One of my absolute favorite reaction analysis videos. In my opinion, Puzzle is one of Band-Maid's greatest masterpieces, and the acoustic version might be the "Holy Grail" of their catalog. You really bring out what makes this song great. Thanks for what you do Wave!!! 😎
Once again, I come in late as I was at work when you uploaded that. And once again, I was listening to that exact live fast version of Puzzle in the car. Then I come home and you're reacting to it. So awesome! Live rocking Puzzle is often my favorite B-M song. Other days, other songs are my favorites. It depends on my mood. I knew that song would blow your mind. So many things going on at once. Oh, and thanks for the shout out at the end. :)
Your video always feels "love". I'm glad you like "Puzzle". It's my favorite song in the song BAND-MAID. This song is good for the composition of Kanami , but the Miku lyrics are also the best. She expresses a very sad relationship beautifully. It looks a bit weird, but in fact, theiku is an intelligent one. I hope that even in English, her word-sense will pass on. My second favorite song is "輪廻 / rinne(reincarnation)". I'm glad that this song also makes a video. I wish that my unskillful English is transmitted.
May this song put closure to all relationships that ended. It does for me, but now it makes me cry for losing a friend .... after 12 yrs only for being married. Hiromi, I miss you so much!
"Kanami is the coolest person ever." > > I have to agree!!!! There hasn't been a guitarist technical/visceral like this since Paige. . .plus the composition aspect. Yet, this quiet, humble unassuming personality. Truly beautiful! . .all of it. . .all of them! Band-Maid gets my vote for best band on the planet right now! PLEASE COME BACK TO USA!!!!
The Page comparison is interesting, given Page himself saw the band and told Akane afterwards he thought she sounded like the reincarnation of John Bonham. :D
Since you found this video from bilibili, it's a chinese version of youtube. The line at the top is translation in simplfied chinese, the bottom line is japanese lyrics. The characters you were confused with are japanese Kanji, which means Han characters ( chinese characters).
The intimacy of (all) the ladies when they play is awesome but you really feel and see it on the acoustic version and they (Saiki and Kanami) lay bare their souls for all of us to see. Pure Beauty and Love.
40:54 Top is a Chinese translation of the lyrics and the bottom are the Japanese lyrics. The first characters are kanji (Chinese characters) and the rest are hiragana (Japanese phonetic alphabet).
Somebody may ask "why is this video so long?" I will ask "why isn't everybody's video on Puzzle at least this long?". You should do "anemone" the studio+acoustic versions. It's the song that the music box is playing before Puzzle and they play the acoustic version after that.
I'm sure others have mentioned it already, but Kanami does most of her composing on piano, and she really does have the mindset of a composer. The way you break down how all the parts compliment each other to enhance the song in certain ways makes me think of the kind of composition that goes into, like, a movie score or something. The composer has to be familiar with how all of those instruments sound and what they're capable of in order to serve the needs of the film. It's not something you have to be a genius to do, but it is music done on another level. idk maybe rock and pop bands do this more commonly than I think and I just don't have the training to hear it, but it was really cool to learn about it at least. I really love the acoustic version of Puzzle, too. Kanami's voice was so unexpected. I mean, I knew they could all sing, but that sweet tone caught me by surprise. Ironically, the only thing I didn't like was the tone of the guitar. It sounded fine, yeah, but it was only using the piezo pickup under the bridge. To me, it gives it a tone that's sharp and muted at the same time, losing all of the warmth you normally get from an acoustic. I'd have liked it better if they had mic'd her guitar, but it's a small thing to nitpick compared to how great the entire arrangement is.
Love your reactions and in-depth analysis! And while you're over on Bibi you absolutely must grab their legendary Moratorium Live video (from this same concert and you can actually hear them leading into Puzzle at the end) - but only if you really want to see BM cram every rock genre into one amazing track :)
Since I first heard it, Puzzle esp. this particular 2017 live has always been in my top 3 despite my entire top 20 changing every few weeks or when a new album drops. So you bet I love this to bits, enough to include it in my all time top 10 songs bar none. And yours might be the best reaction of this so far. Thank you. This definitely made my day. And if you haven’t figured it out already, yeah I’m similarly entranced and inspired by Kanami. It’s honestly impossible not to like an eccentric workaholic genius like her, who is also a really sweet and modest human being. Her being a pretty woman is probably the least significant of the factors that make her such a muse-worthy individual. There’s a reason why she has always been the most voted member in all of their reddit polls despite BM having quite the rare balanced distribution of popularity among their members.
The gyrophone intro to acoustic puzzle is from their song Anemone. Even though most people prefer acoustic version, the original studio version is such a beautiful composition too good to dismiss. Hope you check it out eventually.
@@GaryHolloway-810 Do you know why nobody else can speak Kanaminchish? That is because she is so modest. When anybody asked her "What did you say?" , she always said "That's OK" and closed the conversation.

I just love this song. It's so complex and so interesting. And I always find it fascinating that these two videos are actually the same song. And I have to agree about Kanami's understanding of music. There's so much in that cute little head that I find incredibly interesting, even as a non-musician. I don't even want to start talking about her voice in the two acoustic versions. So incredibly beautiful and together with Saiki just dreamlike. 【 'Our rock never dies ever. Kanami's exquisite sounding acoustic on Puzzle here is a K. Yairi SJY13H Steve Hicks Custom Electro-Acoustic. K. Yairi is Kazuo Yairi, who I believe was associated with Alvarez at one time.
First: If you listen to Puzzle acoustic studio release, Kanami's vocals are replaced with Miku's. Secondly: There is an acoustic version of Anemone which Saiki and Kanami performed directly after Puzzle from this same show. As they were getting ready to play little Kanami tries to introduce the song and having never had to talk, she gets nervous jitters and starts rambling. She literally cannot stop talking. Saiki takes several attempts to "reel her in". It is so cute to see this rock monster lose her control. And watching Saiki politely telling her to move on. LOL
Kanami isn't on the piano. It is Saiki's piano teacher and he who did composition that was played. Saiki and Kanami had a discussion about this on Twitter the day it dropped. FWIW - before the two of them clarified I also thought it HAD to be Kanami on the piano.
@@cembor Nooo... It's so much not Kanami in style... We know how Kanami plays piano, she's completely different. I guessed initially that it might be actually Saiki playing it. But it was more wishful thinking, because that playing is highly technical, and it would mean that Saiki actually is a piano genius. The fact that it's her piano teacher, explains it all. He plays like Keith Tippet from King Crimson...

This is The Song, and this is The Reaction. I think all haters and those who think that they lack talent should watch this reaction.
Anyway, enjoyed your reaction, keep it up 👍👍🤘🤘🤘
Same, LOL. Now I need a turntable.
You took a magnificent song and performances and amped up our appreciation of this astoundingly talented band even higher. My sincere thanks Wave. Incredible.
32:08 Wonderland (live) in their UA-cam channel. You will also hear Miku's low pitch voice too.
I wish Band Maid recorded the song Kanami wrote the words to, the one titled "My Dog Died". Lol
Hahaha!!!
Sounds like a smash country hit !!
Hehe.
I love Band Maid. I listen to them every day.
I love Band-Maid & fans.
Dear Wave!
Greetings from Shizuoka (you know? That place dominated by Mount Fuji!)!
Warming up more and more to your reactions!
I am no pundit or professional musician, but simple facts should explain a few things:
Kanami has a very solid classical education and composes all her tunes on the piano first, which explains why she can turn at will a song/music into what I may dare call "symphonic rock", and consequently she will never play the same thing twice.
Best regards,
Robert-Gilles
The thing about Kanami being a musical genius is because she was trained in piano at a very young age and she indulges herself with classical music. She knows her music theory despite being self taught in guitar. Her mind has been influenced to the great classical composers such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, and more. Additionally her influences come from various guitar geniuses as well, Santana, Steve Vai, and more. Add all into that, she pretty much created her own style now. ^^ *note: she was a struggling singer-songwriter before Miku discovered her.
for some strange reason... that entirely explains her persona.
@@chalfo They call her "daughter from the box," which in Japanese means that she lived a life protected from all troubles. Normal family, relatively rich. All her bandmates have divorced parents, some experienced financial difficulties in childhood, etc.
This reaction was why I recommended it back when I did, Thanks for this great reaction.

This is the song that got me hooked on Band Maid
Supplementary. You do know that Kanami is a classically trained pianist, as is Misa. In one interview she stated that her ambition was to marry Saiki.
Champ is Awesome love the react . Long Live the PO!
Kanami is in a league of her own while staying so grounded .
Great job as always
No wonder Kanami loves Saiki! What a great voice!
So what you're saying is that this song has many little pieces to that all fit together in an intricate and specific way. Kinda like a........ PUZZLE? :)
And yeah, MISA doesn't really have any standout parts to this but, if you pay attention to her lines you'll notice for much of it she's either matching Akane's notes or she's mirroring Miku's lines with a little twist.
Honestly, the 2 parts that always strike me in this song are Miku's back up vocals that you noticed the high/low/high on and the trill or whatever it's called that Kanami does to match Saiki's notes during the chorus.
But yeah, this is a consistent top 5 band maid song for me.
From Japan
I am looking forward to your reaction every time.
@@VladimirChupin I read somewhere that Kanami's guitar teacher went on to form the Addictone guitar company - a brand she played before PRS.

*Wave Potter* and *Kanami* sitting in tree then along came *Rosie* and whap! there is no tree.
😁 😁 😁
I don't know, Wave seems pretty busy up in my tree lately. 😏🧡🧡🧡🧡💁♀️

EDIT should have added : in both cases the be extra effort is worth it
Kanami has such an awesome power stance for such a shy creature!
Ryan Mears and septomj are great lovers of bandmaid also!👍🤘🤘😉😁
@Wave Potter FYI Band-Maid just announced today they're releasing 5 of their albums on Vinyl November 3rd.
Now Wave, you are ready for Puzzle live, acoustic version along with Anemone! It’s just Saiki and Kanami! You would have to react to both! Really good!!
My no.1 bandmaid songs🤘🏻🔥
In reply to your question about whether this song is on Band Maid Prime, so you can watch Kanami's part: yes and no. There is no solo video yet with the camera angles. However, the full show from which this video is taken is there, so technically, you could go and watch it over there (that's the Studio Coast one).
Also, they will release the five previous album (before Unseen World) on vynil in November.
Great breakdown of the two faces of this awesome song ^^
One of my fave Band Maid songs! ♥
Champ of medium is a cool dude, Dicodec is awesome! Both are funny!
Agree-and along with Wade here, add value to my appreciation of music.
Awkward is another song I really like from this same concert. The progression is crazy on how it starts to how it finishes.
Find someone who looks at you the way Wave looks at Kanami at 29:33
best reaction and analysis yet Wave !
awesome breakdown of a truelly special song...and damn Saiki gets me everytime with those last few lines in the accoustic
This has always been my favorite song from Band-Maid (both versions).
One of these days, our schedules will line up! Thanks for sharing that awesome coincidence! 😅 Love it!
Thanks Wave!
Since you found this video from bilibili, it's a chinese version of youtube. The line at the top is translation in simplfied chinese, the bottom line is japanese lyrics. The characters you were confused with are japanese Kanji, which means Han characters ( chinese characters).
The intro riff is pure AC-DC.😉
Kanami "The Riff Machine" Tono ❤🎸❤
The intimacy of (all) the ladies when they play is awesome but you really feel and see it on the acoustic version and they (Saiki and Kanami) lay bare their souls for all of us to see. Pure Beauty and Love.
40:54 Top is a Chinese translation of the lyrics and the bottom are the Japanese lyrics. The first characters are kanji (Chinese characters) and the rest are hiragana (Japanese phonetic alphabet).
They are the best band I have heard ever, so I think that they should be your favourite band.
Somebody may ask "why is this video so long?" I will ask "why isn't everybody's video on Puzzle at least this long?".
You should do "anemone" the studio+acoustic versions. It's the song that the music box is playing before Puzzle and they play the acoustic version after that.
I'm still wondering, why they did not made a beautiful transmission from the music box to "anemone" first and then played "Puzzle".
@@joki5346 That would be too simple 😂
I believe her acoustic is an Alvarez Yairi
Liking before it even starts
Me too!
That was an epoc reaction! I agee....Kanami is mega cool. Something about her is fascinating
That was fun ... now going to watch it all again (more Cider)
MISA can speak otter. That means there's nothing the Maids can't do :)
MISA can mimic otter but not sure if she can speak otter😏
But we know A-chan can speak 🦍 and Miku can speak🕊😂
@@K.H.D710 It's true. Kanami just speaks her own otherworldy language that no one else can understand. I call it Kanaminchish :)
@@GaryHolloway-810 Do you know why nobody else can speak Kanaminchish? That is because she is so modest. When anybody asked her "What did you say?" , she always said "That's OK" and closed the conversation.
@@K.H.D710 And that's why we love her Mr K. Plenty of musicians can't wait to gush about how awesome they are. Not our Mincho :)
@@GaryHolloway-810 Mincho follows the golden rule of good storytelling: show not tell. That is why BM releases an album every year. Mincho just has so much to tell us 😁
I just love this song.

In anemone acoustic (from bilibili too) you will enjoy the lovely kanami's voice. It's same concert.
After this video he definitely sleeps on the couch tonight
In his chair, with headphones on his head, listening to the entire BAND-MAID catalogue 😜
Kanami's exquisite sounding acoustic on Puzzle here is a K. Yairi SJY13H Steve Hicks Custom Electro-Acoustic.
K. Yairi is Kazuo Yairi, who I believe was associated with Alvarez at one time.
Kanami was originally a singer-songwriter.
Since you are on Bilibili. Should check out Band Maid “ Take Me Higher “ too.
What you guy think?
glad you picked up on mikus rythm here-its sooo unique and powerful wooow
this song floors me alwasy
Band-Maid - making love songs interesting again. Even if it's about an unrequited one.
LOL
Love everything about this song😎wave you'll have to find & listen to the accoustic version......it is gorgeous!!!
Check out the "Prime" version of "Different" with Saiki's vocals. Dollars to donuts that Kanami is on the piano accompaniment.
MISA MISA MISA!
MISA!!! MISA!!! MISA!!! 🥃🥃🥃 the heavy sound is so good. My #3 Live B-M song
