- My headphones were starting to show some wear after 6 years of use so I replaced the headband cover with a custom one I made. If you'd like to do this yourself, you may use the template here and give it a try yourself.

I was tracking along with the first part thinking "Yeah, I can do this". And then you pull out a friggin laser.
Think of the laser as a fancy pair of scissors. You can print out the template, trace it onto the fabric, cut it out with scissors and continue without a laser. Or you can send me an email and I can sell you pre-cut fabric.

@@IvanBuilds Can you provide some information about the laser you are using and what you are using to control it?
@@austinhardy5860 the laser is a diy unit, made from an Openbuilds Acro kit and using a JTech Photonics 3.5w laser driver and diode. It is committed by an Arduino Uno running GRBL. The software I use to generate gcode and control the laser is called LaserWeb and it is open source as well. Hope that helps, otherwise I can probably put up a quick video describing the setup.

It's cheaper to buy. We are in the 21th Century and there is plenty of China, Chicago, Ghana, Japan, etc. to make them for couple of dollars.

I just rubbed the leather coating off of mine. Now all that's left is the grey fabric and they are even better than the original.

Excellent guide, and thank you for the template. Replaced the headband on my M40Xs and it came about half a cm short on both sides, so would suggest keeping that in mind for whoever else is doing a similar job
Thank you for the template! I bought a laser module for my CNC specifically for this project. Sewing the black velour was prob the most challenging part. I had a hard time not skipping any holes. A tip to anyone with a laser cutter, wet the fabric before cutting for a cleaner finish. Overall well worth the effort.

Absolutely amazing video. Just replaced the headband using the template (printed out on paper), worked out really well. I’ve been using the headphones for 7 years, now they are ready for some extra years of usage.

Big thank you for this video and the pattern ! I had some pleathery material lying around and it worked great for my ATs. Instead of following the thread holes by hand I instead stretched the material a bunch so it would curve on the sewing machine. Thanks again !

I didn't unsolder the leads so I cut the top piece in half long ways and baseball stitched the seam. Thank you for the free pattern.
I contacted Ivan and he sent me the pre-cut fabric at a very reasonable price and with quick shipping. I followed the instructions in the video exactly and am super happy with my 'new' cans - they're better than stock in my opinion!
I had virtually no sewing or soldering experience but still managed to do this without ruining the headphones, so if I can, you can. Thanks Ivan!

Best way to quickly/nicely/cheaply take care of headband cover is to wrap it with inexpensive, common GROSGRAIN RIBBON, I used 7/8-inch width/size, and needed about 3.5 to 4 foot length of ribbon. (I imagine you could use any type of similar-width fabric ribbon or cloth strips to do this.) The whole process takes maybe 5-8 minutes, once you know what you're doing. All you need is ribbon and scissors, a bit of electrical tape is helpful.
"Grosgrain" style ribbon is very common, has textured "ribs" across it and a fairly non-reflective satin finish, and looks great on the headband. I cut a couple thin strips of standard electrical tape to secure each end of the ribbon to the starting end of headband while I was wrapping it onto headband, but ultimately the plastic endcaps compress and hold the ribbon by themselves once the caps are screwed back together. In order to fit the finishing end of the ribbon under its endcap, you will need to use scissors to cut only the last couple inches of the one finishing end of the ribbon at an angle to a endpoint (exactly like tennis racket handle wrap comes cut at one end).
The end result looks great, will stay wrapped in place, and is durable, using $1 or less worth of grosgrain ribbon. (Tons of colors to choose from, too, but I used matching black).

I'm so glad I found this video in my Google searching. Bought some turquoise canvas fabric to replace the peeling headband cover on my M40xs. Ordered some turquoise Brainwavz pads as well so I'll end up with a splash of color on my cans! Thanks for making this vid! Gonna be a fun weekend project for me.
Really nice tutorial! Just finished mine in tobacco brown velour goat hide. Thanks for the measurements, cut them out with a normal pair of scissors.

Thank yoooou! I’ve also had mine for about 6 yrs and it’s flaking/falling apart. I have replaced the earpads, but just need to do this now. I’m not buying a brand new one when it is still in absolutely perfect working condition!

@@1985cactus I wouldn't know. I replaced my ear pads with new ones that are the same as the originals. Going off-topic: the flaking on my headband is becoming worse. I might go for a headband cover or a 'full headband' replacement from Ivan Builds (the channel of this video). The video description mentions that he sells those as well. A new (or different) headphone could also be an option.
I did this using a black synthetic leather and it looks amazing! Unfortunately I didn't have access to a laser cutter and had to do it all by hand. Still had great results! Recommend 100%
Did you use the supplied pattern, how did you end up transferring it? The outline is easy enough... but the holes... :D
Yeah, I used the pattern provided in the description. The holes were definitely the hard part of doing it by hand. But since I had no lazer cutter I had no other idea of how to do it. It' takes some time but it's possible to do it by hand. @@SianaGearz

Thanks for providing the templates! I had exactly the same problem with the headband, as a temporary solution I have used textile tape to cover it but that looks and feels pretty bad. This is a much better solution!

Wow. What a nice little DIY you did there. That stitching, simulated by the laser came out beautiful.
Your method looks great, better than the original, but as an alternative I think changing it so that it wraps around the headband and then uses velcro strips along the outside of the headband to hold it together would be more versatile. That way you could have several different colors/patterns, burn custom logos into leather, the possibilities are endless and changing them out a simple process.

Just get a badminton racket grip and wrap it around .... It looks brand new and the falling leather problem is also gone the grip is staying in great shape for me now over a year

Simply remove the encaps from either end (2 screws each end) and wrap the entire headband from one raw end to the other at an angle, overlapping each wrap over the previous revolution about 1/8-inch, just like a tennis racket handle.
The end result looks great, will stay wrapped in place, and is durable, using $1 or less worth of grosgrain ribbon. (Tons of colors to choose from, too, but I used matching black).

(My previous comment: Nice headband covers are about $3 including shipping on Ebay and Aliexpress. Or you could cut a compression tube sock and slide it over headband, no sewing necessary. Or possibly neoprene pipe insulation or tubing. Some have used car seatbelt protector covers , as well.)
Some of my screws are completely corroded! Does anyone know where to buy replacements????
Great video and personal project! You’d do well if you made and sold custom headband replacements online, as speaking for myself and many others who can’t do the laser cutting that would be very handy!

This was the best replacement video I've ever seen... I'm going to try it with a better fabric so I don't have to do this every 5 years.. Is there any fabric that will last for 25 years?

Thanks Ivan. I finally made these and they worked out very nicely considering I made a couple of mistakes. I used a sewing machine rather than hand stitching so had to 'ease' the difference. Couple of gathers, but they look great (in a brown pleather/vinyl) compared to the flaky 6+ year originals. Now to try them on a laser cutter at my nearest MakerSpace!

You can now get a nice pu leather replacement from Soulwit that looks great and stock, cinched with adhesive and velco. This definitely is the OG mod though!

I have for now just used some paracord to wrap around as a quick fix, but certainly gonna get some leather ( I think I will go for goatskin) to do exactly what you did! Maybe next step being using the same for the earcups.
Did you end up using real leather? Did it work out? The pattern as it stands requires a lot of stretching, i don't know, i'm a little dubious.

I'm doing a repair job on my m50xs and your pattern may very well come in handy! so thank you very much for sharing it. I'm also getting new ear pads and some new arms for it, that was the main thing that actually broke on mine. it seems to bea weak point with this model
Make one video on making ear pads for same using same foam and all by changing the leather only.. Awesome

The template worked well with my HyperX Cloud, I just stretched it a bit. It turned out quite well, not as good as in the video, but I'm satisfied.
I peeled the entire leather on mine an it wasn't bad, looked kinda okay

Nice! I wish I had a laser cutter. I would just around a piece of leather around the headband and stitch them up.
There are online services that can do this for a reasonable price, ponoko comes to mind. You may also want to look at local makerspaces or libraries, which usually have some sort of laser cutter.

@@_1Brick1_ Not at all. You don't need a laser cutter. I cut the fabric using scissors and the printed pattern and sewed it using a sewing machine. Then I did the soldering with a soldering iron.
Guys if you don't want to mess with the wiring , you can use a high quality welcrow , just leave an inch of the same material on both ends also while sticking the welcrow , make sure you stick it one end on the exposed stitching face and the other end on the opposite face

Hi Jesse. In this video I used Amaretta. You can also use Alcantara, ultrasuede, or microsuede. Recently I have upgraded to natural leather and am very happy with the change.

I have the same mat but the limited ATH M50XBB :D Can't you buy a replacement band from ATH's part department. How hard would it be to run an extra two cables in the headband so I can install a battery on the right side and a BT/Amp board on the left?

If manufacturers are going to use material which deteriorates, they should sell reasonably priced replacement parts and make it easy for anyone to replace the parts. The majority of people are not going to do the repair shown in this video. That’s reality.
