  • This ten-minute slideshow is a comprehensive look at Ernest Hemingway's Cuban home, Finca Vigia ("Lookout Farm"), which is located in San Francesco de Cuba, south-east of Havana. Hemingway lived there from 1939-1960: first with Martha Gellhorn, and then with Mary Welsh Hemingway.
This slideshow combines my own colour photographs of Finca Vigia (taken during visits there in 2010, 2014, and 2016) with selected black-and-white photos of Hemingway and family shot during the '40s and '50s.
If you like this slideshow, you can find more photographic essays about Hemingway and Cuba (as well as many other topics) on my blog: clive-w.blogspot.ca

Love this home, I would love to have been a guest/fishing buddy in the 1930’s😎

Thank you for the tour. I enjoyed it very much and especially liked the way you faded in shots of Hemmingway. I would love to visit it if possible

I saw the Pilar 25 years ago when it was housed in Havana at the Museum of the Revolution and it was in terrible condition; the restoration is accurate according to Wheeler.

Thank you so much for creating and sharing this with us! Your film captures the beauty of Cuba and the Finca. I wonder how his ghost would feel about all these people trooping through his home!

How many bathrooms did the Finca have? Looks like only one, off Ernest's bedroom/study?

Thanks, Clive--nicely done! I was there last month, and I thought you captured not just the spirit of the finca, but added to our experience of it by blending in the old photographs showing how Hemingway actually lived there; same thing with Pilar. (I was thrilled when one of the staff there sent me home with a mango from his tree--just another vicarious sharing of the great man's home.) I will undoubtedly revisit your slideshow again several times, to imprint the details firmly in memory. Gracias.

Almost perfect, but too fast between pictures. But still I very much enjoyed and I thank you for this.

Hey Clive. We were at MAC together. What a wonderful video. I’ve been fascinated by Hemingway for years now, though I confess I’m not a fan of his prose. My fourth novel, No Relation, is in a way, my comic tribute to Hemingway. Hope our paths might cross sometime.

Thanks, Terry. Have you read "A Moveable Feast"? It's his memoir of life in 1920's Paris with first wife Hadley Richardson. Wonderful book. I most like his short stories. My favourite of his novels is "For Whom The Bell Tolls". I wrote an epic blog about Hemingway in Paris. You can find it here: clive-w.blogspot.com/2013/10/photo-essay-ernest-hemingway-paris-years.html

Hey Clive, amazing video. Can you tell me what the second song is? I know it is 'Quizas, Quizas, Quizas' but what version?

Thanks. Just noticed your inquiry! The second track is "Quizas, Quizas" by Sonora Jibacoa. They are one of the "house bands" that perform at the Cameleon resort in Jibacoa. I bought a "home-made" CD of their music they were selling. It would only be available there, i would think. They perform in an old-fashioned "folky" style-a bit like the Buena Vista group.
