Recommendation: My first APP exposure was to the title track of the album, "I Robot" It was July 1977, after an insistent phone call, I got to my friend's house, sat on the shag carpet in front of his dad's stereo, and was told to STFU, close my eyes and just listen. We didn't say a word for the duration. It's still one of my favorite musical memories ever!
"Time" means more to me every year that I exist on this planet..."time keeps flowing like a river, to the sea..." Yes sir, it just keeps flowing...I'm 65 years old, and mean to be here so much longer than most people would expect. Be warned...
Funny story... I fell in love with this song as an 13y/o listening to the radio, but didn't know the artist. So I went down to my local department store (Caldors) and went to the record section to search. Well there was album there by ELO called Time... So I Bought it.. I was disappointed for maybe the first 10 minutes or so, when I realized the song I wanted to listen to wasn't there, but then WHAM! I went back and purchased the APP album, but wasn't sorry for the ELO.
This song was released in April of 1981. I graduated from high school in May of 1981. This song was played on a loop as background music as each in my class was introduced and crossed the stage during the graduation walk. (There a bit more than 600 of us). The music was just loud enough to know which song was playing, but quiet enough to not interfere with the ceremony. It evoked many an emotion as we realized that it was time to move on with our lives and leave the teen years behind us.
Alan Parsons was Pink Floyd's sound engineer for Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. The song Holding On To Yesterday was a minor hit for the band Ambrosia in 1975. It was produced by Alan Parsons. An underrated classic. Mellifulously melodic like Pink Floyd 🎶🎸🎹🎵
This song stood out to me when I was like 13 years old and I first heard it. It’s like what you will hear at the end of your life as your soul floats out of your body into space and suddenly everything that happened in this experiment we call “life” - all your memories and all the people you knew and everything that you did and witnessed - all go flashing by you one way, and in the opposite direction you see all different things from history from the dinosaurs and Neanderthals, to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans to the Vikings, Conquistadors, Founding Fathers and the world wars, and the atomic age of technology - you name it. All of it just swirling around and it is revealed that you were all part of a big experiment and you’ve made it and now you’re going to the transcendental place where you are reunited with everything and everyone welcoming you to the finish line.
One of my favorite things I love about this amazing song is the contrast he draws between ‘days of old’ and ‘the future’ and how time remains a constant. WTH do I mean? In the first verse, he’s heading out to sea, which in days of old meant months or even years away with no certainty of ever returning. In the second verse, he’s saying goodbye because he’s heading to the stars (the stars wait for me) which is the modern day equivalent of vast distances and an uncertainty of ever returning. That just elevates this to a whole new level for me.
Eric Woolfson was songwriter and keyboard player for APP. Parsons told him his singing wasn't good enough to be lead vocal on any of their songs. This was the first on which he sang lead. Parsons admitted later he was wrong about Woolfson's voice. The album is a "theme" record where all the songs relate to gambling and casinos..."the game never ends when your whole world depends on The Turn of a Friendly Card"
I haven't heard this song in ages. Thanks for reacting to it. I would also like to add in my vote for "Games People Play" for your next song from them.
If someone is meant to be in your life, they will come back....within TIME!! We ALL have freewill!! This song puts you in your feels!! Eye in the Sky & Games People Play are great songs, too!
My brother that was 2 years older than me got me hooked on this amazing group. When i listen to it it makes me think of him. All i can say is until i see you after i am gone from this earth i will never forget my brother along with my oldest brother and father. This song is so haunting it is so soft and easy listening. RIP to my brothers and father until we meet again.
I heard his influence on Pink Floyd, Supertramp, ELO, Yes, and many others. His use of”space” in terms of soundscape, aural separation and instrument selection is “par excellent”. It’s a mindspace song for sure.
I don’t know if it’s just luck, but you guys seem to have a wicked ear for picking amazing songs to review. And you also capture an amazing amount of detail!
Credit should also be given to Andrew Powell, who did the orchestrations for the Alan Parsons Project (and also arranged the strings for Al Stewart's Year of the Cat).
This is the softer, gentler Alan Parsons Project. If you have the time, the Turn of a Friendly Card Suite is a set of songs, both with lyrics and instrumentals, and it all tells a story together.
Omg you guys are digging up some oldies but goodies from my past. Sheesh. It always amazes me how I can not hear a song in ages and still know the lyrics…..yet can’t remember what I did yesterday. 😂. Thanks for the trip back in time on this song! Man!!!!
For your next song from them, maybe try something with a different vibe. Like Snake Eyes. Or try hearing the other vocalist, Lenny Zakatek. He's Pakestani but, lived in London starting in his young teens. He looks like a Pacific Islander. I suggest the song with him singing Where Do We Go From Here. And there is a version with him in the thumbnail, that is a video made from them working the song in the recording studio. I love it. Studio quality cuz it is the studio version. He has an incredible, somewhat new cover of a song posted to youtube,, where his ability to emote really shines, and (for me) is brighter than the original, but the audience will have a cow if you do a cover of that song first (even tho Led Zeppelin is the world's finest cover band and they dont mind that.) Well the original is by Bonnie Raitt, and she is a spectacular legend, as is the song... so I really should not diss the original one, even a tiny bit. That song is "I Can't Make You Love Me". You do need some female artists on the channel. She is a classic blues rocker. VERY talented.
The song Holding On To Yesterday was a minor hit for the band Ambrosia in 1975. It was produced by Alan Parsons. An underrated classic. Mellifulously melodic like Pink Floyd 🎶🎸🎹🎵
I know some people who can’t listen to this song. I like the end of the song, the Nevermore part, orchestral majesty infused with Blade Runner french horn, totally notates the majesty of a soul finishing a bodily experience and moving on.
I recently found your channel. You guys are above and beyond most reaction channels. Love how you actually do homework on the songs you react to AND you do random songs that I've never heard so thank you for that. Time by Alan Parsons has played at a number of funerals I've attended. The words to the song are timeless.
we used to do a thing called seeing music big quad stereo system pitch black your favourite bud and Allen parsons was one of the best tales of mystery and imagination by Edgar Allen Poe. let your minds eye create the images .
Haunting…I listened to this and it reminded me of a great loss a few months ago. Time waits for no one…it marches on for us all. Love and miss you, my beloved JoJo❤
I remembered this song from occasionally hearing it on the radio back in the day, it didn't particularly appeal to me. Then I heard it *again* in the movie A FANTASTIC WOMAN (2017), It struck such an emotional chord, I became a little obsessed with its beauty. Every time I'd take a bath, I'd listen to it. ⏳ #ViewsFromThe502 #Time #TheAlanParsonsProject
This song to me is about saying the final goodbye and looking back at your life. It could be incredibly sad if it wasn't for his voice and the music arrangement. This song is ethereal, this song is literally God tier. Loved your reaction.
Now that I hear this song again, I think it's my favorite APP song! Even 'Eye in the Sky' fades a little when listening to this! 'The Raven' is another good one.
As an older fellow, I have heard many of the songs you review. This song I have heard many times in my life. Sitting and concentrating on every little sound and affect really helps me appreciate what goes into these old classics. Thanks for your humour and insightful comments. Always a pleasure watching your interactions. You crack me up!
Alan Parsons is ALWAYS a good choice. “Time “ is a tantalizing and tasty slice of musical perfection. Playlist worthy from the first note. Thanks for your enthusiasm. Play more Al Stewart , please.
It makes me think about time, and how as it moves forward, people move out of my life....either through a life change, like a move, a career change or those people who have passed away.....and I am always, ALWAYS.....overcome with emotions. So beautiful, like life itself... God's Peace to you and all here
You guys are just scratching the surface. APP didn't score many Top 40 Hits, but all of their albums had deep cuts that were played on AOR & College radio stations, and rank up there with the best music of the day. I recommend "I Wouldn't want to be like you" from I Robot for your next reaction video.
I just saw Alan Parsons in concert not too long ago (after first seeing him in early 90s) I have been a huge fan since I was a kid in the 80s. His “project” was quite successful .. but he has had quite the career on the opposite side of the mic as well.
Time is a decent enough track. I’d go with IRobot and I Wouldn’t Want to be Like You (the first song bleeds into the second) for a much more satisfying Alan Parsons experience.
The APP catalog is just do deep... everything sounds fantastic... the intro track to the album Gaudi, La Sagrada Familia is just amazing production... APP us for sure pure headphones music... the album Stereotomy was released when i was in college and it is still a big favorite. Limelight, Light of the World, just sooo great. Have been lucky enough to see the Alan Parsons Live Project twice and while the band lineup has changed, still just brilliant with Alan arranging and conducting like the master arranger and musician that he is.
There is a subtle lyric change that most people miss. "Who knows when we will meet again" changes to "If we shall meet again" and then to "Where we shall meet again, if ever." My thought is this is a reference to the afterlife. Time is about life and aging and eventually passing from this world. Another equally dark but wonderful AP song is "Old and Wise." It also incorporates subtle lyrics changes.
The group name is an error. It must have been called Eric Woolfson Projet, all of APP's music has been composed by him, this album is the first one he decided to sing, very well indeed. the last album Freudiana, for me the best, bears his name.
I love this song, but I've never gone out of my way tto listen to it, because of some deep sadness, some unsettling feeling that lingers after hearing it. But I wanted to see what your reactions would be. So now, like always, I'm going to get busy with something else, to change my mood. ✌️♥️
Great reaction, guys!! This song brings back lots of memories. Great to see your appreciation for the arrangement on the song!! If you want to hear another great performance from this album check out "The Gold Bug"!! Great instrumental!!! Also from another album check out "Days Are Numbers".
THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS SONG I WAS DRIVING THROUGH STANFORD…..I WAS 28 AND IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS…..I WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN FORWARD IN TIME…. REMINISCING ABOUT MY PAST…….IN VAJRAYANA BUDDHISM THIS FEELING IS CALLED WINDHORSE….NOSTALGIA ABOUT A TIME THAT NEVER EXISTED….GODSPEED
Ty I can see your a big Alan Parsons fan and I know I’m late to the party on this one as I’m a new sub but you should give a listen to Alan Parsons song l Break Down it’s from the 1977 album I Robot it features the hollies lead singer on lead vocals I really think you’ll like this one I am an old gray bearded gray headed guy and have listened to a lot of rock ‘n’ roll and I really think you’ll like this one
Oh, man, this is a song that I always want to sing along to, and by the time I get to the third line my voice just starts cracking beyond usability. Impossible for anyone who's ever lost anything to hear this and not fall apart a little. So many great Alan Parsons Project songs to recommend. Their tunes are like an intricate Swiss timepiece, jammed full of complex gears and fiddly bits that somehow fit together perfectly. It's also worth noting that every album is a concept album of sorts, so there are a fair number of tracks that work best within the flow of their respective albums. Also, maybe a third of their songs are really boss instrumentals. "Voyager/What Goes Up..." (it's two separate tracks, but Voyager is basically just the intro to What Goes Up, as Sirius is to Eye in the Sky) opens the Pyramid album and has an epic, majestic feel. Very suitable for a tune about man's greatest achievements and how time and tide will wipe them all from the face of the Earth. "Can't Take It With You", also from Pyramid, is an upbeat, relatively straightforward pop tune in which the Grim Reaper argues with his most recent client, who is refusing to move on and leave behind all his cool stuff. And if you want to check out one of those boss instrumentals, give "The Gold Bug" from The Turn of a Friendly Card a try. Kinda Spaghetti Western, a little bit smooth jazz, all awesome.
I’m looking forward to your next Al Stewart reaction, but until then, if you love Phil Kenzie’s sax playing, he appears on the 1979 hit “Heart Of The Night” by Poco. I think Ryan, especially, will dig it. Also, Poco’s biggest hit, “Crazy Love” deserves a listen.
Eye in the Sky is great! (Biased about Sirius before hand). This song is very mellow, you have to be in the mood. It comes on at work sometimes. Beginning reminds me of walking on a windy beach. His range... Wow i have heard this so many times, it is great to hear your perspective. You get so much more out of it! 😊 I did not know coming in if you guys would like it? This is Ryan's Midnight list. If you like more of a feel good song by them - Games People Play!!!!
Your Music Mirrors Your Mind Song Suggestion: Stereotomy Band/Artist: Alan Parsons Project Album: Stereotomy A real hitter of a song Great album A must listen
This whole album is tremendous. The title song is great - Turn of a Friendly Card. Lush music, great lyrics. It also has a fantastic reprise at the end of the album, with a faboulous guitar solo.
RIP Eric Gone forever. I hope we meet again. 'Old and Wise" another mellow masterpiece.
The singer on Old and Wise was Colin Blunstone from The Zombies.
I think Alan Parson fans will agree "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" is a pretty great album.
Excellent, based on the writings of Edgar Alan Poe. Dr Tarr and Professer Fether is a fave of mine
@@jwine4145 It certainly helps if a person had read Poe etc. but it does well as a stand alone album. Very interesting.
I actually prefer "I, Robot". Tales had a couple of great songs, but it was constrained by the limits of the material they could use.
Recommendation: My first APP exposure was to the title track of the album, "I Robot"
It was July 1977, after an insistent phone call, I got to my friend's house, sat on the shag carpet in front of his dad's stereo, and was told to STFU, close my eyes and just listen. We didn't say a word for the duration. It's still one of my favorite musical memories ever!
'I, Robot' has some lush, atmospheric pieces.
Great album.
"Time" means more to me every year that I exist on this planet..."time keeps flowing like a river, to the sea..." Yes sir, it just keeps flowing...I'm 65 years old, and mean to be here so much longer than most people would expect. Be warned...
I once heard Alan Parsons' song "Time" described as mesmerizingly beautiful. I can't disagree.
Funny story... I fell in love with this song as an 13y/o listening to the radio, but didn't know the artist.
So I went down to my local department store (Caldors) and went to the record section to search.

@@coolworx one cannot be sorry about ELO, it's impossible 😊

It's contemplative. I want this played at my funeral. I think everyone gets the message. It's universal.
“Old and wise “ is a must reaction for you guys!
This is his best album… hands down.
Alan Parsons was involved with the production of Beatles Abbey Road and Let it Be.
You guys should check out their song I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You 1977...great grove and guitar!! ❤️
Alan Parsons turned 75 and still going strong! Never tire of hearing this song.
They also worked with Ambrosia 'Holding on to Yesterday"
Not "they". Only Alan Parsons produced it.
This is a drive into the gold sunset to the diamond sea kind of song.
My mother loved this song. God rest her soul 🙏 ❤️
'Old and Wise" is my favorite
Listen to Nothing Left To Lose from this same album. Great harmonies melody and arrangement
Tales of Mystery & Imagination, I Robot, Pyramid, Eve, Turn of a Friendly Card - all excellent albums, start to finish.
Agree!... I would include "Ammonia Avenue" as their last great Album before the magic was lost... 😅
I used to sing this to my son when his father was away with the Coast Guard..........
One of the key reasons I enjoy you guys' channel so much is that you are such excellent listeners.
This song stood out to me when I was like 13 years old and I first heard it. this song along with Kansas" Dust In the wind I've heard played at funerals.
Add Holding On To Yesterday by Ambrosia and Bay Of Kings by Steve Hackett, then it's complete.

This piece actually *sounds* like he's preparing for an endless voyage. What a wonderful piece and I have always loved it.
Another 80s song that could be a 70s song?
Sister Christian by Night Ranger from 83.
It's a banger!
I loved Eric Woolfson's voice on this and "Eye In The Sky". The 2nd half of the Alan Parsons Project. RIP, Eric!😢

Hey, guys! It's about "Time" you react to this haunting tune. I like your reactions!
I haven't heard this song in ages. Thanks for reacting to it. I would also like to add in my vote for "Games People Play" for your next song from them.
You guys want another deep song by Alan Parsons ..try “old and wise”
SUCH a great song!!

Alan Parsons Project - Psychobabble
I heard his influence on Pink Floyd, Supertramp, ELO, Yes, and many others. His use of”space” in terms of soundscape, aural separation and instrument selection is “par excellent”. It’s a mindspace song for sure.

"Old and Wise" is my favorite APP song!
Me too.
Fantastic song, the 70s and 80s were the best time for music. Try some Emerson , Lake and Palmer. From the beginning or Lucky Man.

You could listen to "The Gold Bug" from the same album, an instrumental piece of genius as only Alan Parsons could do 😮
Check out their follow-up to "Eye In The Sky" and similar-themed hit "Don't Answer Me".
I know some people who can’t listen to this song.
I like the end of the song, the Nevermore part, orchestral majesty infused with Blade Runner french horn, totally notates the majesty of a soul finishing a bodily experience and moving on.
You should check out the title track because you know the game never ends when your whole world depends on the turn of a friendly card.
AP is one of the Music's Geniuses!!!
Could you do another song by this amazing band? The song is, "Old and Wise". Ty so much, your neighbor in Navarre, Fl.

A good friend of mine back in the day, Dave, put me onto The Alan Parsons Project back in the 80's and I have thanked him ever since.

Try 'The Voice', by Alan Parsons Project, from I Robot. Really trippy!
Parsons has a great voice .He and David Pack from Ambrosia do some acoustic Beatles covers on Y T
@Robert Everett I never actually said it was
Parsons I was saying that Parsons voice on the Beatles tunes with Pack were quite good ..
I recommended this sad but beautiful song 2 years ago, when you reacted to "Eye In The Sky", so thanks a lot! 🥲

This is a concept album and best experienced listening to the whole album.
Thank you! He was the producer for Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon and others
Love this song as well! (just watched the other APP video) I bought this album on cassette tape in 1982 (at the mall)!
Hoping you go deeper down this rabbit hole! Would love your reactions to The Raven and Psychobabble
I’m so glad America adopted Alan Parsons as their own.
I also recommend,”Can’t Take it With You”
THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS SONG I WAS DRIVING THROUGH STANFORD…..I WAS 28 AND IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS…..I WAS IMMEDIATELY TAKEN FORWARD IN TIME…. REMINISCING ABOUT MY PAST…….IN VAJRAYANA BUDDHISM THIS FEELING IS CALLED WINDHORSE….NOSTALGIA ABOUT A TIME THAT NEVER EXISTED….GODSPEED
This song always gives me serious goosebumps! One of my fav’s ever. Thank you for playing one of my requests!
Thank you!! If you get into this song it can bring you to tears.

A real hitter of a song Great album A must listen
This whole album is tremendous. The title song is great - Turn of a Friendly Card. Lush music, great lyrics. It also has a fantastic reprise at the end of the album, with a faboulous guitar solo.
You would love "Games People Play" Its more upbeat like "Eye in the Sky"
