- A white R&B vocal septet from York and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, the Magnificent Men (often abbreviated to the "Mag Men") drew their members from doo-wop groups called the Endells (who released one single, "Vicky", in 1963) and the Del-Chords (who released "Everybody's Gotta Lose Someday" in 1964). From the latter band were culled singers Dave Bupp and Buddy King, with instrumental backing provided by the former Endells (Jim Seville, Bob Angelucci, Tom Hoover, keyboardist Billy Richter, who had replaced Tom Hoover in 1965', Terry Crousare and Tom Pane). They signed to Capitol Records and "Peace Of Mind" was released in 1965. The follow-up single was "Maybe, Maybe Baby", radio exposure for which brought them to the Apollo Theatre in New York. Their legendary performance here drew James Brown up from the audience, joining them in a 45-minute set. However, the group was facing difficulty in outgrowing their local popularity, with "Stormy Weather" failing and "I Could Be So Happy" only managing a meagre number 93 in the Billboard charts. Joining the Motortown Revue as its only white act, their next effort was "The Sweet Soul Medley", a version of the Arthur Conley standard reworked to include nods to their favourite groups of the day. The rest of their Capitol singles failed significantly to embellish their reputation (despite a strong reading of Jimmy Webb's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix) and in 1969 the Magnificent Men moved to Mercury Records. Both "Holly Go Softly" and a version of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" also stalled. When Bupp left he was replaced by Stan Sommers (ex-Del-Satins) but the group did not record again. ~Source: Encyclopedia of Popular Music

No one could beat beat them for their commitment to the soulful sound Black people loved so much. It told us that some people knew just how we were feeling. They truly were "MAGNIFICENT". Hope they still are. They remain among the greats of soul music. No one ever forgot!

Unsung singers of the 60's. They need to put the Magnificent Men on that show. One of the best groups of all time.
This is amazing! These young white men were so inspired by the Motown Sound that took the world by storm! You can tell they listened to a lot of Temptations and Four Tops records!

I watched them practice in my neighborhood as a young 12 yr old aspiring musician. I was blown away back then as a 12 year old. God bless them all for inspiriing me. Harrisburg, Pa loves you.

They performed at the Uptown in Philadelphia and were petrified cause the were the only white group. The received a standing ovation at the Uptown. I was there. Great group.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim Seville as a drummer in the late 80"s. Great friend and bass player. That band was great.
They were the house band at The Raven in Middletown, PA back in 1964/65. They backed up some great groups at the Raven like The Marvelettes, The Impressions, The vibrations, Ruby and the Romantics, etc. I use to go there almost every Saturday night.
Best of all Blue-Eyed Soul Groups of the era!

I was responsible for organizing a concert in the Fall of 1967 at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. I had heard the Mag Men in Philadelphia that summer and later asked them to be the lead off group for this concert in which Dionne Warwick was the headliner. Billed as the 'Blue Eyed Soul Brothers', they were fantastic and these UA-cam clips bring back some great memories.

They played the APOLLO and blew them away.These guys were (are) great. A killer classic from the summer of `66. They were huge in Charlotte,NC and throughout NC in their hey day.
Saw them at the Uptown Theatre in Philly. The tore it upp!!!! The crowd went wild. They looked petrified when they came on stage, but they started singing, it was over!!! The hit it out of the PARK!!!!!!!!
Those Uptown show were awesome back then! So happy I was a teen during that time. The music, the dances, house parties, etc. wonderful memories.

Saw the Magnificent Men, the Soul Clinic and Billy Stewart at the one and only The Sunny Club in Camp Hill....What a thrill it was driving from Gettysburg to see these guys....!!!!

My friend Jenny and I went to Philly to North Broad St to the Uptown to see the band. We were running late, had trouble finding a parking space. My friend had long, long blonde hair and we really stood out. A police officer asked what were we doing there and we proudly told him we were going to the Uptown to see a band we knew. He smiled and shook his head and told us to be careful and we ran off to get into the theater.
Barbara, I thought that was when we went to see The Delphonics! Either way, I loved the Mag Men, as you well know!
Must admit, was sceptical at the introduction, then the vocals came in and I was blown away, what a voice !

When they performed at the Uptown in Philadelphia, a venue for Black groups they were so petrified when they came on stage, feeling the Black audience was not going to embrace them. They were the first, and I can't think of another, Caucasion group that played the Uptown.. Then they sang! The entire audience stood up and raised there hands. It was an engaging moment for me and the group. Fabulous!!! One of the best groups I've ever seen. They are in the league with the Temptations, The Miracles, The Four Tops! Too bad they didn't keep the group going..

The Magnificent Men were HUGE in Philly. Both Hy Lit AND the Geater loved them. Hall & Oates also made a big slash at the Uptown.
Swingin' Time was a TV show, similar to American Bandstand, hosted by WKNR (Detroit) personality Robin Seymour and also, for a time, CKLW radio's Tom Shannon. This show was broadcast on CKLW-TV Channel 9 out of Windsor, Ontario, from 1965 to 1968, and also seen in a few other markets in syndication. The show featured recording acts, both nationally and locally popular, lip-synching to their latest releases while teenagers showcased the latest dances on the show's dance floor. ~SOURCE: Wikipedia
Being from South Central PA, the Mag Men were hometown heroes..I loved them so much! I was only about 6 years old when this song came out, but I remember my mom playing it over and over, and I fell in love with it. Local radio played it as well. I also have a cousin who is 10 years older, who wore out my other favorite, "I Could Be So Happy. Mag Men, forever!!

I remember these Mag Men from my high school days at Wm. Penn Sr. H.S., York, PA. I saw them at the Shriner's Temple in Harrisburg. A great bunch of guys!

I used that drum kit at the 1966 or '67 Harrisburg Auto Show. The MM were the featured performers but another group was to spell them. However that group's drummer was a no show and somebody remembered I banged a skin or two. Someone from the MM, I don't remember who, told me to use their drums. I think we played a 4 number set, all straight, nothing fancy required. When I saw the video I thought 'hey, I know that kit.'
I once played bass guitar in four song set with the Chancellors, a top regional band out of the University of Nebraska. Four Kingsmen songs. All four songs had almost the same bass parts. Afterward the drummer came up to me and said pretty good but I'm usually the one to set the pace and we like to keep it constant. LOL It was a small venue and everyone was kind to me...
Mag men were a great band. I went to high school with quite a few of the guys. Stormy Weather ...in my mind was their best. So proud to know you Jimmy, tom and terry!

Saw the Magnificent Men at Geneva College in 1969 on a double-bill with The Jaggerz -- two great blue-eyed soul bands.

I grew up in Harrisburg in the 80s and I can't believe I never heard of them until recently. Why did The Patriot-News never write a profile on them? It's not like we had so many great music acts from the area that became a national success!

I swear I cant remember how I heard the “Live” album- and this is 1967- I have the vinyl album and listen frequently and I am just amazed the I know I am one of “not that many” in the country that know of these guys.
I am a singer songwriter and have a couple of pop rock songs on itunes and such. But back in the days of 64-69 I was a singer in a top 40 band……and proud to this day that - Back then WE had all the great music Soul EnglishRock American Rock and there were no boundries- it was called TOP 40- Yo God Bless the MAG MEN- rudy norman

While a student at West Virginia State College saw them at The Checkmate in Charleston, WV in Nov 1968. Great show! Pretty certain they played The Carousel (another great classic soul/r&b club) in Clarksburg, WV the following night.

Oh yeah... Swinging Time UHF Channel 50 out of Windsor (Canada). All the up and coming Detroit/Midwest groups did that show. I first saw the Spinners and The Capitols (Cool Jerk), Rotary Connection, Amboy Dukes, Bob Seeger and The Last Herd, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels An The American Breed ( on this show. These were just a few.

Was playing "The Trop" in Atlantic City in 87 and ran into some of them. As a total fluke, I mentioned a (really good) novelty group from Summers Point, NJ in 66 called "Saradophadiusidonamalutishupops" - yup, "the biggest name in show biz". One of them said that was us!! They dressed up like Roman soldiers out of a Cecil B De Mille movie. Had a very progressive guitar player named Reuben something. He was great
