From what Joey is describing, around 9:25ish & onwards, is classic Bi-Polar Disorder, I know it all too well & have had it since my mid-teens, I'm now 48 & only medication keeps it under control. Intense "natural" highs that can last for days, getting more & more erratic, until you become so over the top with delusions of grandeur & constant uncontrollable thoughts that you invariably crash so hard & wear yourself out to the point that you can barely function & become beyond depressed & in my case incredibly sad. Like falling into a bottomless pit of misery & hopelessness. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. That's why he was probably drawn to the alcohol & particularly to the drugs, to escape the constant up & down cycle & to try & get the same highs he would get before being medicated. The drugs used to treat these disorders stop the overwhelming depression but at a cost because they also stop you getting the "highs" & make you feel very flat & dumbed down. I think he was very brave doing this interview.
Now we hear at least every month a star player getting caught with something with no media blowout. This was blown way out of proportion, and good on Joey for fronting the media about this.
Airing out his mental health issues over this was an absolute disgrace for the media. Good on him for fronting up to this, I didn't realise how big a story this was at the time.
Should have got Gould to learn a bit about recreational drug use and dependency before he did this. Dropping an eccy now and then doesn't necessarily mean you've got a problem. Like the name says, it's recreational. It's fun. The majority of people using ecstasy lead totally normal young lives.
