My Mom is 100 and lives with me. The conversations we have daily are priceless. My niece and I took her on a "roadtrip" (3000 miles round trip) back to Texas (where she was raised) last summer. The stories we heard down there about her life! Keep listening to the stories, Patara. You'll never regret any of them.

Two years ago a local library gathered elders who grew up locally to share stories about what Christmas was like growing up in the village of Altamont, NY. I'm so glad I attended! Recording the oral history of older generations is so important!

We NEED Nana stories and more Nana videos. I miss my Mamaw. I loved her stories. Grandma stories tell us where we come from and are full of wisdom we need now a days.
It’s a wonderful thing you are doing documenting your granny. My grandmother was Cherokee and could still speak the language. Was an awesome cook, lived to be 93. I would give anything if I would of had the foresight to document her life. An indian lady was the first teacher to come to the holler where my dad and his parents lived. My grandparents fixed her a room on their front porch and she lived with them while teaching. She later went on to write a book called, The Song Goes On and there is a whole chapter in it telling about the time she lived with my grandparents. About the home, my grandmother and my father. She nicknamed my dad Bo. He was two at the time and it followed him throughout his life. It is even on his gravestone in parentheses after his real name.
These are the conversations I’ve been having with my grandma, she’s got dementia, but she remembers that I have started raising chickens, so we have a conversation about chickens every time I see her. I know the story by heart now, but what a good idea to record that the next time I see her.
Reminds me of my mother telling stories for her life. Precious moments.

I closed my eye and went back in time and heard my grandfather talk about the old times. I am now 59 years old and long for the old days!! Our grandmothers have forgotten more than we'll ever know. I was too young when my maternal grandma died, I didnt learn but I remember. They were all scrappy women who made it work through sheer determination.
I’m 67 and both my grandmoms passed by the time I was 4. There has always been a void in my life not experiencing having a grandmom. I love all your videos but this one is extra special. Thanks for sharing your Nana with us because so many of us never had the pleasure of having or remembering their Nana.❤
Those are some precious memories, that you got to record. How cool is that? I'm always ready to listen to Nana's stories. My Nana is no longer here, she was born in 1900, was 99 when she passed. The stories I always heard from her daughter my Aunt, were about her smoking a corn cob pipe, and her tales of the Trail of Tears walk, and her hunting stories. I remember that until really late in life, she had long gray hair that I would help Aunt wash, when she set in the kitchen chair, her hair would touch the floor. It was so hard to comb. Up until my Aunt had to have it cut short, that was some job combing and drying her hair. She'd braid it and wind the 2 braid around the back of her head, and pin up. Loved how she would sneak candy if it was around. LOL Miss that woman, she was always full of stories to tell.
I was a tee-tiny girl when my "Nana" went to be with the Lord and in my 20's when Grandma went to be with the Lord...so this is SO extra special for me!!! I miss having those STRONG God fearing women in my life!! I KNOW you cherish these times with your family women...God bless all y'all!!
Makes you wonder what current generation of grandparents will be remembered by.I often wonder as a grandmother of a 9 year old and twins turning 6.We are lucky to live close and split summer childcare with other grandmother.

We must listen to our elders, they teach us how to survive. So precious. I didn't get the opportunity to know mine, both sets passed way to young.

That is precious Patera. She's beautiful. Our family in NC still do not eat much meat. They still today eat mostly Pinto Beans, Cornbread, Green Beans, and Potatoes. Grandpa lived to be almost 101. His daughter living on the mountain is 80, and her brother is 79. They still cook mostly on the wood stove, especially in the winter...breakfast is biscuits and gravy. This is where we go to get away from the world. I cook on that wood stove, every time we go to Grandpa's Mountain. God Bless your Nana. I could listen to her all day. This is such a treasure! Both of my Grandmas died when I was young and we didn't even have a tape recorder back then...I'm 69 now. Thanks for sharing your Nana with us!

This made me cry! I wish more people cherished their heritage the way you do. Our heritage is the story of how we came to be, where we came from and where we will be going thru future generations. I LOVE to hear the elder generation tell their stories! My granny is 89 years young and I wish we could write a book on her life, hers and my Papaw's. Thank you for blessing us with this video! I practically lived with my grandmother. She was a chef and even cooked for a president and was super big into kings , queens, n history. I swear she was also very intuitive and had abilities. She would say somthing and a month later it would happen n she would say " I said that? " so quiet n sweetly n we would all laugh. Lol . I know you love your nanna , I loved mine so much. She taught me so much n was so special. Nanna s are the best !
My grandma always made cornbread, pinto beans and fried potatoes she fried in her cast iron skillet! Grandpa ate me with tobacco sauce!
Patara how very interesting. I dearly loved listening to my Big Mama, mother and my mother in law talk about the depression and when they were first married.. What they cooked What the men brought home from hunting or fishing. How they traded Ration stamps among the family. Everyone wanted coffee or cigarette stamps. My mother in law wanted the shoe ration stamps. She had two small growing boys who needed shoes. My mother made and sold hamburgers to field workers on credit waiting for Saturday payday. Applause to Granny! She talks my language when she starts on pinto beans, fried potatoes, corn bread!! People here say Soup beans" ...I'm like what ???....fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, tomatoes, green onions, apple butter, fresh milk, churned butter. Making sure there was enough if someone stopped by. My mom was born on Greasy Ridge Ohio near the Ohio river. She had a great memory. Lost her five years ago. Her blue eyes and dirty jokes. Miss you Mom.
Good morning, fellow homesteader. You're looking wonderful! Good job on your recovery, same for James. I think Nana will forgive you for recording her in secret. My father died a few years ago in his mid-90's and he'd tell me so many stories. He grew up on a farm and they raised Angus cattle, hogs and grew chickens for a commercial operation. I was lucky enough to have spent a lot of time on the farm as a child.
You are so lucky to still have your granny with you an be able to record her for yourself an furtue generations.God bless your granny

Oh I remember the days I had my great grandmother and grandmother. The "stories " they have told me was really a Lesson about life. I have some videos of my grandparents but sure wasn't away to record my great grandmother. I'm so happy for you to still have your grandmother. And was able to record her. From this Nana to you, memories are precious. I took pictures of my Dad 2 weeks before died, he was playing the harmonica and singing. He was 84yrs , this was 9 years ago. I miss him so much. 2 was after that I lost him. He taught how to live frugally and still eat good, plant garden, stretch fence. A whole passel of things. I've dug postholes, too. Hold your people dearly, we are only here for a little while.
Wow, that is so GREAT to listen to my friend! I miss talking to and listening to my Great GrandFather. I sure wish that man was still here - he a great person. He has been gone since the late 1980's.....

This made me miss my grandmother so very much. As a grown mature woman I have so many questions to ask her about her raising in Western Tennessee. She had a wealth of knowledge that I just wish I had talked to her about before.
So many of these types of conversations I had with my Grandma. At age 70 I can't tell you how much I wish I could have recordings of them. I pray Nana won't be upset with you. This is a legacy she is leaving. God bless you both.
What I would give to have a conversation with my Nanny Della Faye....and a plate of her cookin. She was a Tennessee ridge-runner born in Maryville. She passed away when I was 17...it was like losing my mother. This was such a joy to watch. Thank you for sharing your Nana with us!
Thank you for sharing your Nana with us. My mom, who's 95, grew up poor in WV. Her daddy was a coal miner. She tells of being scared to feed the chickens because she went barefoot most of the time so she wouldn't wear out her shoes. She said the chickens would peck at her feet so she would throw the feed at them and run. lol
I bought my father a tape recorder and asked him to tell me stories. He is still here, living with me now, I am so truly blessed. If he is not recording stories he is writing our family history. I have learned so much.

As I listen to this, the old hymn Precious Memories come to mind. My grandma fried the absolute best potatoes! That old wood burning stove, cast iron skillet and her butter...yum! The three tined fork with the wooden handle is what she had as dinner forks. Loved it!

Your family will love the fact that you recorded this conversation with Nana, Back in the 70's my wife recorded many conversations she had with her Grandmother, and Great Gramps. Great family history, and listening to the voices and stories they told is a real pleasure. It brings back many good memories of loved ones we miss so very much.
My grandmother would never talk about the past with me. When I would ask her a question she would just laugh and say 'Oh, I don't know honey.' You are very lucky to be able to have actual conversations with your grandmother.
You are blessed to still have your grandmother. I lost my grandmother in 1982. She was born in 1891 and had 14 children. She had children from 1917 to 1936.
I would give almost anything for 1 hour alone with my grandmother. She was my rock and best friend. She's been gone over 40 years. Thank you for sharing your grandmother with us

Mom and her sisters sat down with my Papa and recorded stories. Boy he sure had some. All of the grandchildren received a 2 CD set of Papa’s stories for Christmas that year. He had just passed away the previous month. I remember taking them to my chest and just crying. Such a precious gift.
My grandmother passed 42 yrs ago. How I wish I would have spent time just to let her talk about her life. Same for my mom.

My husband was born and raised in Washburn, TN. The story of the sausage-making & the pictures of that cornbread reminded me of our Papaw & Granny Bea (his parents). Oh, how I wish I had paid more attention to the old ways. To know the things they knew would be such an asset in this current social climate.

When she was a young girl (around 1890), my Hungarian great-grandmother was saved from drowning by being pulled out of the water by one of her long braids. She vowed to never cut her hair . Til the day she died she wore a long single braid wound into a crown at the top of her head. She followed her husband to the United States in 1928 fearing for her and her children's safety from political unrest, violence and food insecurity due to raiding parties that would steal everything they had. She refused to return to Hungary when he chose to return . Thank God, knowing what the future brought . Alone, except for the help of other Hungarian immigrants who spoke her language, she raised three daughters in the city during the depression and World War II. She always felt so blessed to be in America and raised her children to love this country. The immigrants and first generation Americans are gone now, I am second generation and have been compiling all I know about our family lore and history, where we came from, the personalities of the strong women and men so that future generations will know also. It is a great thing you are giving your descendants (and to us)!
My papa was a master storyteller. I wish i had recorded him just talking. From his childhood tales, wartime, depression, we've lost so much of his knowledge, wisdom and just fun.
A very very special treasure Patara. I sure wished I had recorded my mother and her sisters and her brother sitting around the table telling all kinds of stories while playing Canasta. They would keep me entertained for hours. My husband of 52 years, still eat fried Spam sandwiches. People used to eat to fill their stomachs and ate what they had, and they were thankful. Thank you for sharing.🎄

What a pure treasure your Nana is! And your pictures flooded my brain with precious memories of my childhood. My Mawmaw's quilting rack that hung on hooks from her ceiling, my Pawpaw getting a hen ready for Sunday Dinner (he used an old tree stump and hypnotized it holding it's beak down) and watching her pluck feathers at the back porch sink. Fried spam sandwiches. Aw those good ole days! Thank you Patara.

I used to watch my 1/2 Cherokee Grandmother brown her coffee beans, She never ate rice and always put a tiny bit of molasses in any greens she cooked. I was age 7 when she left us with terrible uterine Cancer. She was the first with it named, My little mother and her younger sister and her granddaughter, and myself all followed. Get those Pap Smears girls. Sending Love and I continue to PressOnRegardless.

What wonderful memories your making I have wonderful memories of my grandma. Infact I was grandma and a granddaughter at the same time she died 3 months after I had my first grandbaby 31 years ago. Thank you for sharing your time with your grandma. Love ya girl. God bless hugs❤

Although I am a Nana myself now I still remember my Nana whom I called “Nanny”. She taught me so much as a child and an adult. Great memories and I think of her every day and miss so much. Cherish your Nana. I know now being a Nana myself I have to do my part with my grandchildren now and will teach them as much as I can while I’m here. Oh my love thank you. My mom passed away when I was 9. My aunt become my second mom and she passed away last year. This 55 yr old woman has tears running down my cheeks. Thank you for sharing your Nana with us.
Very smart thing to do! I lost my sweet Mama in 2017. I still have voice mails from her and I recorded her talking and laughing. It is video. There is nothing on earth more precious to me! Keep doing this Patera! It’s priceless. Sweet love! Nothing like it!❤️

I am looking after my 90 year young mother. We get into those porch/dinner table conversations pretty regular. Sometimes when shelling peas or beans you know it’s coming when, “ back in the day” is the starting line. You know we are the lucky ones getting to hear all those stories, and all the teachings from there life.
It has to be said, the family resemblance is strong in you. Isn't it wonderful to be able to say, "I look like my great grandmother." I know I inherited my grandmother's nose, my mom's eyes, and my dad's fast metabolism. I feel so sorry for those who were unable to grow up knowing their extended family.
That was wonderful. I was blessed enough to record my Granny and Dad taking about past things. They are both gone now. I love how you have the old pictures come to life. I'm going to try to do something like that with my recording and pictures. What a treasure.
Wonderful! I’ve been watching the Great Depression Dairies on UA-cam this week. These stories are precious and should help teach us. Also to help prepare us because history repeats itself.
Absolutely love this. I often record my Grandmother talking to capture her response. I wish I had gotten into my ancestry and thought to do the same with my great Grandma when I was in middle and high school and they were alive.
You’re so blessed to still have your nana! My dad went to a one room school house in the 1930’s and he and his brothers used to rabbit hunt with clubs on their lunch break. They’d take the rabbits home after school and my grandma, his mom would cook it up.
Thanks for sharing this precious memory... All of my grandparents were gone by the time I was a teenager in the 60's...what I would give to have a recording like this. Fortunately, I got to pluck a few chickens when I was coming up and enjoyed hand-churned butter on homemade biscuits👍❤

I wish I had some of my Grandmother's (both of them) wise words and stories recorded. I loved hearing their stories and they had so much wisdom and insight from life experiences, that are hard to even imagine. I'm approaching 60 and hope to someday have grandchildren I can pass stories to. Cherish all the time you have with her. I lost the Grandmother who helped raise me (while my parents worked), 30 years ago. I would give anything to sit with her and hear her talk. 🥰

I so miss the stories my Grandfather told. He grew up in the hills of southern Ohio. They were amazing.
