I’ve never heard “Funny Thing” by Thundercat before… now I have to write my own bass line. In front of you. In 3 takes. Let’s hit it.
Need the bass tab and sheet music for the original Funny Thing bass line? Here ya go -

Thundercat is one of the most shredding bass players alive today - what am I getting myself into?
“Funny Thing” is the most popular track from Thundercat’s 2020 album “It Is What It Is,” featuring his beastly signature 6-string bass sound.
Watch the video to see if I was able to fake it okay on 4-string, and how my bass line compared to the original. (hopefully not terrible)
I had to dig into Thundercat more, here's a full mega video on why he's awesome: • 7 Reasons Thundercat i...

Which bass line did you like better, mine or Thundercat’s? ⚡🐱
I’ve listened to that song so many times it was kind of refreshing to hear the new bassline lol
Man you got really close to it though, not gonna lie…
I'm going to sit on the fence and say I liked both of them 😎
Your play cut through the mix better...both versions were very good.
You should make a series of trying to guess the bass lines of songs you’ve never heard. 👍
You are incredible for creating what you did in 3 tries! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 This is why you are my bass teacher! And yes, more Thundercat please!
I’m very impressed with how close your overall bass line was to his. Excellent job!
This was a very interesting video. I’d like to see more featuring other artists as well.
Thanks Dave!
@@BassBuzz WE want to see, correcting my friend there
Saw Thundercat last summer when he opened for RHCP. He was amazing, and his finger speed is ridiculous.
I went for RHCP but fell in love with Thundercat
@@overseer_grimal where did you see them? I was at the PetCo Park show in San Diego
i saw them in charlotte!! amazing show
That sounds like an amazing show
I saw them in London, thundercat played there too. Was really good
As a beginner bassist I liked to see u build a bass line on the spot with comments, it is inspiring. And again a great video 👏
Dude, in 3 takes you got like 80% of the way there?! I'd be over the moon. It also took major balls to do it live in front of the camera like that. Kudos.
The final take sounded great!!! I'm impressed with how quickly you managed to come up with an such an awesome bass line
@@silencedones4421stop being a hater.
@@silencedones4421 yeah no one before you ever thought a video could be faked. Is it hard work to be so insightful? And from your mom's basement no less.
OR maybe we enjoyed the video and don't think Josh is a fake. You think otherwise; good for you. Keep scrolling.
Here's another insight: to the rest of us you are just an A hole.
@@michaelhartman6513 "Hater"? You can't deny that what he says could be true, though I personally find it hard to believe
@@silencedones4421 you must just be a bad musician then. it doesn't take ten fucking weeks to come up with a bass line lmfao
@@flatd13tsoda56 this LMAO
You should feel absolutely proud of your bassline. Being able to come up with a sound that was pretty darn close to Thundercat's in such a short time speaks to your flexibility.
Thank you!
I love Thundercat's looks and personality. He was amazing in Suicidal Tendencies, he has titanium bones in his back (his bass is a boat anchor), and is music goes into the weird side of R&B which makes it easier to get into for outsiders 👏👌
That guy has two spinal chords or something lol
To be able to put that bassline together that quickly is amazing. You should be doing session work in Nashville or LA.
Yeah, that pedal chain sound would totally fly in Nashville 🙂
Thanks Matthew!
@@foljs5858 Yeah well you didn't understand the comment
@@foljs5858 I think he is a little more versatile than that one pedal chain...
@@foljs5858 it’s what country music has been missing 👀
i do enjoy myself watching 10 minutes of a man crying ngl, wouldve been a win either way
also thank you for making me listen to bohemian rapsody for the first time, absolute eye opener
Did you just move here from Mars? 😂
I would love to see more of this kinda video, loved seeing the writing of what’s going through your head.
Thanks Adam!
I wish more UA-cam music "experts" put themselves out there like what you did here. Great video. Inspiring. More of this please.
I love that pro bassist Josh is playing a Squier for this vid. It's taken me such a long time to realize that price does not equal quality/playability/sound/etc.
Since the late 90's, overall instrument quality has improved so much that you can find some really amazing "beginner-to-intermediate" level instruments and still some clunker "pro" instruments. The variability in styles, human physiques, and desired tones so often bridges the gap in areas that affordable instruments are seen as deficient.
In fact, just yesterday I picked up a bass I put together from parts back in high school, and was blown away by how much something that has basically zero resale value still rocked so hard. \,,/,
TL;DR: Don't impulsively buy that shiny new piece of gear on the internet; wait until you've tried it out with your own hands/ears and compared it to something you already like/own to decide.
That is all true, but (to me) it felt he was struggling to make smooth hand transitions between the low and the high notes (and note: he has great technique and large experience).
In this regard, a 6-string bass would be better for if you want to make chops like Thundercat's but not hurt your fretting hand in the long run. (There are some companies that make solid 6-string basses in the same price range as this video's.)
It sounded great. The fact that your baseline had such similarities shows how much experience you have and how good your ear is. And also, hell yes to more thundercat videos!!
Sensei Josh was on POINT! I'm gonna tell everyone that my bass teacher's name is Josher-Cat!
This is probably the best video I've seen from you, and I've been a fan and subscriber for years. You've definitely helped me as a beginner bassist and I'm now at the point where I'm crafting lines and playing open mics and this is again a helpful example for that mindset. I liked your line and your analysis of it in comparison to Thundercat's. Can't wait to see more videos like this!
Not a bassist or even learning bass (just a weirdo who loves to see artists work) and happened to find your video - super impressed! I'd love to see more of this kinda thing! ❤️
You and Thundercat have a big thing in common, y'all both make me want to pick up my bass right now and get to playing. I can't hear anything by Thundercat without immediately wanting to try it, despite knowing he's well out of my league.
Y'all are both bass-ed, I love it!
This is a really cool video! Seeing a really good bassist like Josh work out a bassline is inspiring - no one has it all worked out on the first try but as a beginner I was so elated to see sometimes everyone just has to fall back on the pentatonics. Plus it helps demystify the process a bit. Looking forward to more.
Great job on creating your own take of Funny Thing, Josh. You did a fantastic job!!! Insane that this is your first video on Thundercat. That dude inspired me to care about Bass in tracks more than ever before from his talent alone. Keep on rockin' in the Bass world ✌🏼
I'd love more content like this, it does so much to help me understand how to construct effective and musical bass lines
I dig it. I have never heard this song or of the Thundercats (thanks for playing this because I now dig them)...however, I felt both versions (yours and his ) were great in their own way. Thanks for posting this. It encourages one to step outside their comfort zone.
I’m so glad I got ahold of your videos first when I picked up the bass 2 months ago. Thanks so much for this fun content.
Love the educational take on this. Love the post listening analysis of what you could learn from the original line to improve your own compositional techniques. Great bassline ideas for having to write/record on the fly.
That was really fun! I enjoyed the whole process. Yes more Thundercat. And more bassline creation videos please!
Would love more thundercat videos!
I definitely liked your approach to the Bass Line for this song Josh, especially the tone! 👏🏾👏🏾
This is great, I think if this were a series it would no doubt blow up eventually.
this was so fun to watch, please do more of these!
this was a fun and instructive video. really helpful to see your thought process coming up with a bassline and then to hear your explanation of what thundercat did so well. what i liked about your bassline is the way you distinguished parts of the song and then build up the intensity. thanks 🤘
I hope you do more of these. Explaining the thinking behind it and how your two lines are different was super interesting and informative.
Thank you for the Thundercat video! Impeccable use of improvisation. Both are so good.
This is incredibly valuable for those people who are attempting to create an original bass line. 3 times a year is my recommendation. THANKS AGAIN for all you do brother !
You did a fantastic job with your take. Really impressive!
This is an amazing video idea man! More of these please! 😩🙏🏽
Videos like this takes the masters and grounds them in a way that to make learning easier. Keep it up, these are really cool.
inspiring video! thanks for taking the chance to not only entertain us but inspire us to get outta of the comfort zone
Great job Josh! I really like your bassline in addition to Thundercat's. It's cool to see how different minds fill the void and YES, more Thundercat videos!!
I enjoyed watching this, because coming up with new bass lines has always been really hard for me and this has given me some good ideas about the thought process. A lot of it really is self-doubt on my end though. Well done!
you are seriously talented, mister BassBuzz and I'd love to see more content like this! you rock! thank you for your beginner to badass course btw!
This was incredible to watch! Well done! To me, it felt a lot like learning a song you've never heard, from your bandmates. It is great for inspiration and creativity.
This was very cool Josh! For me, I always loved the creative process, so you gave us all a glimpse on how that works and your thought process. I have never heard Thundercat before, so this was some new music for me. But I loved how you took a risk and tried this. That in and of itself is a great lesson for your viewers. I would love to see more of these types of videos. Thanks for sharing this one.
I've always been stoked to be learning bass from you in BTB, but this proves to me I picked the right teacher. I'm excited to keep going and hopefully have command of the instrument like this.
I actually think that your bass line is pretty cool! I was actually impressed how close it was to original. Congratulations! Only on 3 tries looks very impressive to me! 👏🔥
Yours was great as well! Do more of these. I too have been enjoying the drumeo first time vids but this is even BETTER!
100% want more Thundercat videos. He's so awesome
It was an awesome last take giving the time you had ! Amazing as always ! Thanks for the inspiration !
That was brilliant, Josh! Well done! And very brave of you. Loving the honesty! And I haven't seen this kind of video on UA-cam before. Hope it gets a tonne of views.
This was really fun. Keep 'em coming!
I think you did great! To even come up with an improvisation take that's close to Thundercat's says a lot. That was damn good!
you did amazingly great!
this style of video is really really fun to watch, and it certainly makes me want to go and grab my bass to try something like this!
and above everything, it was very educative, for real
thank you and the team for the amazing content as always!!!!
Actually a pretty good execution, considering the performance stress of the challenge. Personally, the coolest baselines I write always come to me when I'm in the zone, alone, with zero pressure or distraction, and when I don't give a rats ar$ about making mistakes. I just play whatever the hail I want or feel. That's step one for me. Step 2 is I just keep doing this until I fall into THE groove the song tells me it wants, usually by mistake. But I know it when I hear and feel it. Finally, step 3 after I've got the groove dialed, I do Note arrangement and cleanup. figure out which notes don't belong and which do.
That was awesome, loved your take and Thundercats original. I now have something else to add to my 'funky' playlist 😎👍
Would definitely like to hear more about Thundercat and see you do more videos like this. Really interesting to hear your thought process.
Love it! More videos like this would be awesome to see. I'm just a beginner but looking forward to doing this type of thing in the future and this is great inspiration!
Too cool for school, Josh! I loved watching your creative process as you worked your way through this very funky and complex song. Again, I so appreciate the Beginner to Badass course for getting me into bass playing. Seeing you challenge yourself with something difficult inspires me to keep going!
I don't know that anyone who still says "too cool for school" has any authority on coolness, but I agree with the sentiment 😂
I liked your part about as much as his. Pretty amazing nailing his general feel like you did. I’d love to see you do more of this sort of ‘challenge’ thing.
Great format, Thunderjosh 😎
In all fairness Josh, you nailed it pretty dam close too, your choice of effects was spot on! Im not a thundercat fan, but you definitely rocked a pretty good groove!
Outstanding Job Josh! As a beginner bassist who has tried something like this before, it’s inspiring to see you absolutely nail this. I Love your content, keep doing what you’re doing!
Wow! Loved this video, Josh. You always have great playing and a personality that comes off fun and friendly. Wouldn't mind seeing more videos like this of Thundercat or even other artists as well.
Sounded different, felt the same. Awesome video, great format, great seeing a pro be challenged, have doubts, make mistakes; explain the breakthroughs.
It was really cool to see/hear your thought process as you worked developing these lines, would love to see some different songs!
Awesome job. You sounded very close for sure. I had my headset on and was walking around doing stuff while listening and couldn't tell who was playing. That tone is super funky and nice.
Those bass lines were amazing man you're hella talented ❤
This just shows how great a bass player you are; very musical stuff 👍🏻
Really liked this style of video! more pls
Awesome!!, you're a really talented bass player and your course has helped me a lot musically!!
Great vid bro, keep them coming man.
This is a great video concept, it's really insightful to hear how you think about things. Also now I have a new artist to listen to!
I learnt a lot about how the bass works from your challenge. Good job on the video!
this is one of the coolest things ive seen on youtube as a musician. Just like the drumeo videos I hope I see more of this type of content from you.
I'm blown away by how close you were in the pattern/phrasing. Big props for having the guts to post this. I bet thundercat would like what you played and I would love to see more content about thundercat.
Now if we could see thundercats response, upon seeing this post for the first time! I think he would dig it.
(Edit: regarding your question, for the reasons you mentioned I would probably choose thundercat, Though if someone played me both versions without knowing about this challenge, I don't know if I could pick out the original by ear only)
Great video idea! Really like those text comments explaining your thought process.
It's also cool to see that you are rockin a Squier Bass.
My man is the goat 🐐. Love that tone you dialed in!
The text explaining what you where doing at each phase was very helpful. Super interesting to watch and see how you approach something like this!
This was badass! You're great man!
Please consider making more of these! Id love to watch more but cant find much more Bass specific ones. Difficult to recommend a song but really enjoyed this. Thanks!
Holy shit josh this was awesome to watch!! Please please please make more thundercat videos. Also, i love that shirt!
Real solid work. Would love to see you do this again with other songs you somehow haven't heard before.
This vid was awesome, you should definitely do more like it!
That was great! Good job😎 and yeah, more thundercat videos pleaseeee
You did a great job bro! Salute 🔥🔥🔥
Cool video idea, Josh! Well done, keep 'em coming!
Watching the creative process is a really valuable insight, that we don't often get to see. So more vidoes like this with other music styles please.
Love your channel! Awesome rendition of a funky fun song
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More of this.
More making basslines over other songs you haven't heard. That was awesome!
Just got an affinity and your vids are my favorite thing right now
This guy is doing something phenomenal with his skill. Thank you Josh for so much useful information.
Great Basslines!
Man i love this concept
Gotta say your video is crisp and the editing is fresh but subtle and not overdone, me like! These type of challenges are always fun, but for me it's hard with limited music theory knowledge (I think). So it's good to see someone try this, who knows actually what he is doing! 😅
Thanks, glad you dug it!
I love this! And PLEASE talk about Thundercat I've been waiting soooo long to hear you talk about him
You just displayed why my daughter loves you as her bass teacher. If I get to cover this I'm blending both your lines... amazing more of these types of videos please
Sounded awesome man!
This is different style of video but I really really like it coz we get to see your brain work and figure things out. In the beginners mind, there is so many little things to pick up/be curious about, you can't imagine how much a person can take away and learn from style.
Learnin to slap the bass here.... Played drums for almost 30 years, live, bars, fairs, you name it, and the way you layed in your lick there at 3:24 with that little flare of the hand coming off the fretboard, that's what I'm talking about lol.Great job man.. when I saw my bass player do stuff like that I knew we were feeling the groove lol... he would do EXACTLY what you did there then, tiptoein backwards to the beat lmao.... Raw improv is scary especially live and especially the rythem section, but it's the most rewarding thing ever, and imo one of the only things to cause a TRUE bass player stank face and/or head nod lol...
I dug it! i've never heard of Thunder cat until now, and I'm a fan from this point on lol. I was humming along as you were playing, and we thought of doing a lot of the same things lol. It was pretty cool.
You did great Josh! More vids like this. I have your course and love it btw.
Watching him live this weekend it’s about to be great 🥶
