- Trent Alexander-Arnold. Is he a midfielder? Or is he a defender? It's the million dollar question all football fans are trying as the scouser refutes almost all conventional responsiblites of a right back and seems to be creating a position of his own: the False Fullback.
Today we explore how Trent has become not just one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, but arguably the most important player on Liverpool's entire squad.

As a Liverpool fan, he is implausebly underrated.
It’s tough to say underrated when pundits say he’s a better passer than becks haha but I get what you mean
@@football.cinema.not tough tho, Beckham was overrated just like Paul Scholes.
@@football.cinema.I mean he is because people constantly say he can’t defend when he can..but he’s not actually a defender first for this Liverpool team. Nice vid tho 👌🏼
No chance 🤣
as a Liverpool fan, he actually _can't_ defend
Trent's football intelligence is just off the charts. He sees opportunities that other players don't. Some players have vision but not the passing accuracy and vice versa. Trent has both. His quick corner against Barca in the 2019 semi is an example of lightening fast thinking and pinpoint accuracy in passing.
He will be even more impressive and impactful if he can switch it up during games between the centre midfield and his old positions hugging the right touchline. The effectiveness of Joe Gomez in the Crystal Palace game showed how badly Liverpool has missed the width stretching a team that sits deep.
This is a W take
He is living the dream of every fan who wants to play for Liverpool in any position and perform with the passion of Gerrard.
Never forget his first words after winning the Champions League:
“I’m just a lad from Liverpool whose dream has come true” ❤️
This is the most astute synopsis of the phenom TAA I have ever heard. I read a really good book this year called: 'Inverting the Pyramid' by Jonathan Wilson. I bet next time they revise it there will be a whole chapter on Trent defining this role.
My friend take a look at the book in the back of my room when I’m speaking into the camera 👀 does it look familiar 😂
Looking at the current market, midfield is the most expensive position to fill. Therefore, I think LFC would be better off moving Trent to midfield permanently and finding a new right-back, than spending insane amounts of money looking for a world-class midfielder who might still need time to adapt.
I like this take, any right backs come to mind?
@@football.cinema.jeremiah frimpong from leverkusen. The current fastest player in busdesliga. I hope Pool gets him asap
@@kearskhaw check out the video I did on Bayern Leverkusen brother, i cannot speak highly enough about him he’s incredible 👏 (although if Liverpool were to sign a rb it would probably make sense to get one that’s much more defensive minded)
I am pretty sure he have a passive skill called "bird's eye view" in the whole pitch..
99 vision 😂
That's our secret weapon now, when things seem to heading to the dead end, move Trent to the middle of the park.
Works every time
Haha secrets out im afraid 😂👏
Glad someone did a deep dive. As an old school right back myself, it’s been a ride to say the least watching this boy. But I’ve come around FULLY that he is one of the most dangerous playmakers not just at Liverpool but in world football. SO glad he’s ours and we have the staff to get the most out of him while maintaining a solid if not spectacular defensive shape. Cheers
The staff truly need acknowledging🙏 with Klopp transitioning more into a sporting director role, the hours his assistants spend on training sessions is truly invaluable now
We had false nine, and now false rb ❤😂
In hindsight, going from Firmino as a false 9 to the exact opposite in Darwin Nunez (a run in behind specialist) would push a lot of creative responsibilities elsewhere
I just never thought it would primarily come from a defender 😂😅
Bro, your channel is extremely underated in this website, this is great stuff... Keep it up👍
Mannn this comment means a lot 🙏🙏 I appreciate the support bro and ofc I’ll keep going 🙂
He is reaching Ballon d'or level. And he's gonna get there too. YNWA Trent.
Lmaooo imagine
🎉Criminallly underrated u deserve more
I appreciate you man 🙏 tell a friend to tell a friend 😂
People slate his defending yet imo isn't that bad but look what else he's brought to the Liverpool squad playing RB, goals, assists and range of passing is on another level, plus versatile, I don't know many RB in world football who have better stats than him.
Great vid mate, Trent is the most polarising player about rn and as a Liverpool fan it’ll be interesting to see where his position goes in the future.
Personally I think he’ll go into the midfield for next season once we get a few defenders, subbed 👍🏼
Appreciate the support and the sub my friend 🙏 any defenders you’d like Liverpool to sign? (I personally think Tapsoba from Leverkusen would be a monstrous move sometime in the future)
@@football.cinema. if the owners are ambitious kimmich would be perfect but if not frimpong would be great too, Altho I’m not sure how good defensively he is. We were also looking at hincapie as I think he can play as a LB if he has to. I’m not too familiar with Bundesliga tho, but anyone from leverkusen looks like a good addition atm (wirtz looks incredible)
@@Do27gg I personally think Frimpong is more ambitious of a signing than kimmich as of now, especially considering how vital he is to leverkusen's system currently.
@@alif.6266 yeah could be right, but if leverkusen drop off the hype with their players will as well. Looks like we could get paulinha from Fulham
Great vid mate
Glad you liked it man 🙏
Enjoyed the video
Happy you liked it 🙏
Spot on mate !!!
trent is so good
Amen
Great video
Appreciate the support man 🙏
An inverted wingback tucks inside to form part of the midfield. An inverted fullback also tucks inside but the difference is he takes up a position like a centreback. These days, Trent plays as an inverted wingback and he did not create this position, Kimmich was already playing in that role years prior.
I agree he didn’t create it 🙂
But he is tasked with the most offensive responsibility I’ve ever seen from a full back in that role (Kimmich, zinchenko and cancelo included)
Liverpool do not play a wingback system with three center backs. So TAA is not an inverted wingback. He also does not play the inverted fullback role. That's the point of this video. To show that he is neither. It's an evolution of those and as we saw the advent of a false nine a few years ago, with Trent, we get a false 66 (lol). Or as Sideline Starters said: false fullback. New. Different role to Kimmich who is primarily a CDM having only played RB less than a quarter of his appearances. To claim that Kimmich has somehow defined a role that he barely plays is a huge stretch.
@@carllilley351 TALK TO EMMM 👏👏👏
@@football.cinema. Check out what Miguel Gutierrez does for Girona.
Lahm played that role under pep at bayern but I see Trent as a midfielder, liverpool had hendo covering Trent when he was inverting.
Thanks! I feel like people expect him to be one thing or another without considering he is creating a hybrid role in Liverpool.
Amazing content
New sub
Appreciate you man 🙏 new video dropping in 25 minutes 👀👀
@@football.cinema. ayo
Imma set an alarm
BRB in 30min
“You pick players for what they can do, not what they cannot”
Just about ever player has weaknesses, its the manager’s job to arrange the tactics to minimize the weaknesses while allowing them to use their strengths. Is Trent the most impregnable rightback? No, butTrent is also one of the best passers of the ball in the league, so obviously Klopp thinks his inclusion in the team is worth sacrificing some defensive solidity.
Perfectly said my friend 👏
Good information
Glad it was informative my friend 🙏
Superb analysis bro..I always wanted Trent to play in the midfield..where Liv benefits more from his attacking abilities..
Exactlyyy man, thank you for the support also 🙏🙏
Right now on brother 🎉
u ate that up
No u 🫵
I can’t believe he isn’t 3rd name on England team sheet after Bellingham and Kane
I feel this 1000%.
False fullback is a cool way to say he can’t defend
Imma call it the “False 66” position
6️⃣6️⃣
Whereas most Inverted FBs act as an extra man in the midfield, looking to get the ball into more dangerous players feet, Trent inverts and becomes essentially a Regista, he dictates our tempo, where we attack, how we attack, when we attack. I've never seen someone as effortlessly progressive as him.
curious about his stats ranked against midfielders in europes top 5 leagues to see what percentile he appears in
I’m also curious and have no choice but to do more research now haha
even though he has the most mistakes leading to a shot, joe gomez a lot of the time fills in at right back and also has the second most mistakes despite playing significantly less minutes. I don't think this says anything interesting other than the fact that teams will target the lw/rb side and the way liverpool attack might still leave that side of the pitch open to more pressure
I agree with you that their natural offensive overload of the right side will contribute to opposition targeting
Every system has a weaknesses after all
He Trent boosted new post as ball netter.
Lost me there bro
Trent will even be more influential when LFC gets a proper #6 who can provide the defensive cover when he goes forward..LFC 🔥 🔥🔥
If you had a blank check who would you want them to sign 👀
Probably Tchouaemeni if he was made available@@football.cinema.
Nah that position was invented by memeguire
True story
inverted wing back.
Lahm says huh?
No he is not creating a new position. He is playing the libero role from a right back position.
I think old school libero’s had much more defensive responsibilities than what we’re watching Trent do rn but fair enough
Stats are meaningless without ball knowledge. You know ball. Have a sub.
Appreciate the sub man 🙏🙏
There is false nine, false ten, false winger, false fullback where is false manager?
Hardly inventing a new position. Man City have been doing this for ages. Bayern did it when Pep was there with Lahm. Inverted wing backs are nothing new. It's basically what was known in the old days as a wing half.
Ao ashi
Mf took the corner quickly 😢
Caught em sleepinnnn
Once Mo moves on he'll slot into midfield with Szobo playing wide right and a proper RB with defensive chops behind them IMHO. The current setup is only in place so we can fit Trent and Mo into the squad.
I just thought about a Liverpool team without Salah and my stomach got hot 😭🥲
@@football.cinema. Going to happen at some point, but do feel we are in a much better position to deal with it now than at any point previously.
This is nothing for a defender. Harry Maguire already created the "false centre back" role a couple of years ago.
I would watch this video if you made it
The thing is, he gets caught out of position a lot due to his attacking instincts
I would say his responsibility to get forward is what causes the exposure rather than his instincts, one hand washes the other but I think the distinction is important
Or rather his lack of defensive responsibility. He loves leaving the 1v1 to the CB
@@vinicy78but what’s more important as a defender, defensive responsibility or the defensive disposability in the form of attack mode activation?
@@ProperGainzI'm good as long as the strategy works but when it gets exposed there needs to be tweaks like Klopp has been doing
@@ProperGainzermm depends on the tactics? Should Trent be listening to Klopp and Pep Ljinders on his positioning or Evanthefoodman from UA-cam?
TAA created not defending
Better than Beckham by a mile
Idk about all that now
literally my LW in player career
Wait like on EA FC? 😂
It is not a new position at all. It is an innovation from Pep Guardiola, who first utilized this role for Philip Lahm when he coached Bayern Munich. Trent is used in the exactly same way, where he moves between positions on right of defense and as a deep playmaking midfielder, what in Italian calcio often is called a "regista", which can be conceived of as the "director" of midfield play, often from position just in front of the central defenders. It is not new, but takes A LOT of skill and training to implement properly. Arteta has given Zinchencho a similar role from the left back at Arsenal.
My friend watch the whole video next time haha, I said the exact same thing about it being an innovation from Guardiola and used zinchenko as an example as well 😂🙏
Although I disagree that he had “exactly”same role as Lahm, they had different attacking responsibilities for their teams
Trent is not just a regista, he gets a lot higher up the pitch and can be found in half spaces and just outside the box/arrives late inside of it
Cheers 🙂
😂 false fullback. Stop trying to create things that exist. It's called an inverted fullback. It's been around for a while now.
Lahm, kimmich, Cancelo, Zinchenko and now Trent.
Someone didn’t watch the whole video 😪😪😪
@@football.cinema. click bait 🥱
Kimmich and Zinchenko did it better tbh.
Slightly different responsibilities I’d say
His Hair was too heavy to defend
😂😂
Stop over hyping this guy. He’s not that great
If you watched the Liverpool v Manchester United game just recently you would see his crosses go straight out of bounds or to no one, no target. Just random heavy passes that are supposed to be through balls.
👎👎👎
false defender 💀
True story 😂
he's just a rightback who sometimes plays in cm its not rocket science
