  • Rev. Dr. Wendy Mohler-Seib is a professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. She is an expert in the field of young Christian discipleship. I encountered her a year or so ago and was clear that I needed to hear her speak on a number of topics. In this segment, we talk about the challenges involved in doing discipleship correctly, especially as it pertains to young folks in the church. She names a number of false beliefs churches have around how discipleship is best done, and we talk about how it is that modern local churches can work our people in the right direction. Wendy also speaks about discerning the voice of the Holy Spirit, and how that has taken place in her own walk with God.
Y'all are going to like this one. I know it. Enjoy!

One of the most freeing things for my church is having a leader set an example where trial-and-error is okay. I've tried a number of things at my church and not everything has been successful; and that is completely fine. Exploring and experimenting in ministry is something that is okay. From that point, it is clear that the church is far more open to try new things knowing that success is not a guarantee and failure is not a sign of God's departure.

What a great discussion! I remember as a youth being imparted a lot of knowledge, but rarely being encouraged and shepherded to transformative encounters with the living God. I believe that young people crave the true gospel and will cling to a faith that offers something the world cannot give, but so often the "churching" experience is just watered-down secular entertainment in a well-intentioned but misguided effort to be culturally relevant by an older generation. Now that I'm one of the older generations and am trying to instill in my son a more solid foundation of faith than I have, I find conversations like this extremely edifying. Thank you!

The Bible Study ‘Experiencing God’. Totally changed the way I and the church I pastored did ministry! It was the single most important resource we used. Because of it we leaded hundreds to Christ and joined God in providing hundreds of meals to poor children each weekend. 13 years later the church continues to provide over 280 meals to children in our community. The impossible happened because God is at work.

    Double commenting.
I was just talking with another man from a nearby church about this very subject and went over a good number of the same concepts. I expressed a concern of mine that the corporate body of Christ does not have a faith that God is personal and present, responding and interacting with us as we humble ourselves before him and lift up praise and worship to him.
