  • Today we talk about two of the most popular calibers for the AR15, 300 blackout and 5.56. Let me tell you some of my thoughts on them but the short answer is yes, I love them both!

I would take 5.56 over 300 personally. The 300blk was intended for cqb effectiveness with a short barrel. The 5.56 requires a high velocity to get maximum effectiveness, and that requires a longer barrel, which is difficult in CQB situations. If we are talking a SHTF situations most of us will not be doing CQB. We also know that most combat situations are between 100 to 250 meters. That being said the 5.56 will be the most effective in most people's SHTF situations.
But 300blk is awesome suppressed, and fun too shoot.

That is true, 5.56 can be used for both cqb and distance if need be, and 300bo is only for cqb

Its a fad round but will one day dry up its not issued militarily and so won't be cranked out of somewhere like China or Russia.
It was meant to replace 9mm in submachine guns now people hand load them to case splitting tolerances and pressures just to prove its better than 7.62x39 and 7.62x39 still beats it out on range most of the time anyway because the drop off of .300bo is atrocious its drops like a brick
5.56 is in another league its competitors are 6mm creed more and 224 Valkyrie

there are multiple loadings of 300blk....the heavy stuff obviously for cqb...but the lighter stuff (under 125 grains) are very good out to 300m.

lol biased much ? Your statement was weird you just stated that it’s most common to have a gun fight within 100-300 yards which both rounds are very capable of , so you choose a (5.56) because it’s more effective, if I hit you with both you wouldn’t tell a difference , ballistics have shown both rounds would do the job

300bo has a similar bc as x.39 and similar energy from a 10 inch barrel as 5.56 through a 16 while less velocity. Supers are great on soft targets and with prices being what they are i think 300 is a great intermediate cartridge for self defense home defense or shtf if you have a reliable stock of ammo.

      @es4583 2 місяці тому

" similar energy from a 10 inch barrel as 5.56 through a 16 " That depends on which bullets in each cartridge that you are comparing. MK262 from a 10 inch has slightly more energy than 150 gr 300 blk from a 10 inch. The difference in energy from even 110 Tac-Tx and Mk262 or 70 TSX from a 10.3 is about 20% at the muzzle. But those 5.56 rounds have a much higher ballistic coefficient, so at range they end up with more retained energy. The heavier the grain weight of 300 blk, the more the energy difference at the muzzle goes down compared to the 70+ grain 5.56 loads.

Just built my first AR in 300blk and came to the conclusion after alot of research that you cannot completely cheap out on a it like one in 5.56. To make the most out of 300blk having a 1:5 twist barrel, an adjustable bcg or gas block, and a silencer are the foundation. Also to keep its compactness, add a folding adapter or pdw stock and maybe a 2nd tax stamp to sbr it. It sure aint cheap especially with ammo cost.

Excellent, thorough, and fun review. Love both calibers. Absolutely love my two SIG Rattlers in 556/223 and 300 BLK. Fun , reliable, solid, but heavy. Sold my Q Honey Badger. Didn't like the internal operating system ie interior plumbing. Considering the new Q HB in 223/556. My Beretta ARX-100 has been super reliable and light weight. Absolutely love that rifle. I waited eleven years for her. The MCX's I use for travel at night and when traveling to other states. And as a bedside gun. The Robinson Arms XCR in 7.62X39 is an awesome rifle and super reliable rifle. The folding stock on it makes it just perfect and the inexpensive/powerful ammunition: .30 calibre/ high powered. Peace

Most people’s opinion on the cartridges stem from military assessments/anecdotes & not real world use.
I’ve never had any military experience, but am a very avid Hunter.
With that experience in mind, I prefer to use 300 blackout If you’ve ever tried to put an animal down with 556 especially a feral hog you will grab the larger caliber every time. 556/223 even when using the curiously expensive hunting rounds they are just not adequate at putting targets in the ground effectively. Even if you speak to people who have used it in combat, most military doctrine is unloading as many bullets into a target as possible, which I believe is born from the use of intermediate caliber cartridges that lack in power.
You do not see this issue when using full power cartridges such as 308/3006- and I am not implying that 300 BLK is in the same ballpark as a full power cartridge but it definitely has more pep to step then the .22 especially out of a smaller barrel.
Again to reiterate, I believe the best test for caliber effectiveness is a hunting application. if it is suitable to drop a large game, it will definitely be suitable to drop a two legged target. Case in point- .223 is not a legal hunting caliber in many states in the US.

For handloading, 300 blk. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve reloaded some cases, and they just don’t get longer. I hate having to trim 5.56. It’s pretty easy to get better supersonic velocities than factory ammo, and subs can be tailored to your gun. 300 blk takes less powder per round, and is more forgiving on the barrel throat.

The fact that this kid calls a 5.56 a good beginner/entry rifle makes all of his claims void to me.
5.56 has been in service for years. I have one word for the 300 BO fan boys, Marketing.
The 300BO is so niche specific it is not worth it to me.

5.56 is a great beginner rifle. I’m not knocking its history at all. I work in a gun shop where so many customers come in asking for oddball calibers for their first rifle. I try to tell them to just start with the basics. I have said repeatedly that I don’t think 300 blackout is great unless you’re suppressing it

300 blackout is stupid distraction! It makes no sense it was adopted by special forces for specialized mission sets. Everyone wants to be SF. 556 literally does it all. No need for worthless ammunition types.

No such thing as worthless ammo in my eyes. You train for what ammo that works for you.

I'd say its not worthless hot supersonic loads going like 2400 fps in a 110 grain ballistic tip has more energy at 300 yards in

300 blackout is a much better choice out of a 5-9” barrel than 5.56 is. 300 blackout is excellent.

This is the most ignorant and uninformed opinion I've ever seen someone have the audacity to spit out. It has almost identical performance/velocity to 7.62x39, which has proven itself as a hard hitting and capable platform. 5.56 is a gimmick caliber that requires velocities upwards of 2200fps to mimick the severity of larger 30 calibers by fragmenting and tumbling after wound entry. 5.56 can't even be used below 10.5 inch barrels because it dips below the 2200-2400 velocity threshold and just becomes a steroid infused 22lr that zips through targets without doing damage, that's why it was regarded as less than ideal performance in the middle east as they engaged at ranges where 5.56 lost enough velocity to struggle on target. 300 blackout performs better than any pistol caliber at subsonic velocity and hits like a truck with supersonic ammo out of any barrel length because it's bore size and grain weight does the performance. It has earned its place as the best caliber for short ARs and the best caliber for subsonic suppressor use. You can use barrels as short as 5.5" and perform very well, 5.56 cannot, and most people need small platforms for home defense and vehicles.

@@JulianLareswell done!👍🏼🎯 A 220gr .30 cal cartridge that produces A full burn thru only a 9” barrel, that has the same muzzle energy as a M855 thru a 16” carbine has the clear advantage in maneuverability in the confines of the average home defense engagement yet manages to produce 5% more energy at 440 meters - ballistically Its a tremendous round and we have not even mentioned the ease with which you can switch between super and sub sonic velocities and not have to change anything but a magazine. to argue otherwise is a fools errand cheers

@@RonnieEverette Just came from the range with my Ep9. It's definitely one of the most accurate weapons I've ever fired and I haven't had one hiccup in almost 500 rounds. I'd trust my life with it for sure.
