I think this would have been better if dubya actually liked the who. John Entwhistle was more than just a "steady anchor". He was the best damn bass player who ever lived. He is to the bass guitar as Hendrix was to the Fender strat.
Pete and Roger acknowleging the firefighters and policemen on 9/11 was a crowning achievement was awesome. Both are proud of what they have done. Great job lads.
It's amazing how some people can't put politics aside, even for an instant, not even for something as obviously apolitical as this. Roger & Pete are being honored for their contributions to MUSIC. Would have been the same no matter who was president. And people condemn them for not ungraciously walking off stage? Why does EVERY action have to be symbolic? Every occasion politically significant? What world do you people live in?
I was just checking Joss stone, Barbara Streisand, Morgan freeman ,Jack black ,New York Fire Dept. etc etc etc video's here on youtube, dont see your comments there yet, can you tell me when you will be posting/emoting on there videos please? I want to read it, your very 'wordy', its good Man!
Amazing the amount of anger and hostility, even calls for death and murder is found in comments on a video to recognize the contributions to 2 exceptional musicians (wold that it had been all 4) All of you that are so tolerant, open and progressive and are letting your true selves brim over should be ashamed.
@5jerry1 Well said my man. I am old enough to remember seeing htem on the first time on an ABC weekday afternoon TV show from L.A. I donpt remember the name, was it Where the Action Is? or something else. Anyway, they were so great then and I have been a fan ever since. I was born in 1954. I am glad that they still rock. When they leave the planet, it will be my wakeup call that soon it will be my time to go too
@jimmmmybrady I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around me Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday And I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again Don't get fooled again
Yeah me too.I wonder if he actually wrote it though or if he's just reading somebody else's words?Can't help wondering if he really knows anything about the who?
My favourite is Who´s next... by numbers... eh no not in my favs, but SELL OUT is just GREAT... just what they did here.. I hear Dylan´s fans are angry ALL the time as Bobby´s not acting the way they want him to... he´s selling his songs to advertisements and whatever... would be painful to be this angry all the time... ! Don´t care about U2.. "With or without you" was a nice song... in the 80´s.... and bono... Some think he´ll get the Nobel Peace Prize - yeah, right!
haha, i know!...i have to say, i was actually surprised at Bush...although bush probably didn't write this (in fact, i know that he didn't...lol), but it was actually a wonderful gesture to the guys, and overall, it was a well written speech...except that one bit around 3:44...but it's def. a great honour for pete and rog, and i know they'll honour keith and john as well..
the real problem i have with the speech is that he calls john the simple anchor... any who fan knows hes much more thn that... hes as important to the who as any other member....
@buchananstreet that was MY opinion my dear. And I can see from your icon on your profil that we have VERY different tastes. I love Roger's speaking and singing voice and his hair and everything. He looks different to the 70s, that's right, maybe not as sexy as he was back then but STILL.... I think he's damn handsome for a guy in that age and you should respect my opinion as I respect yours. Peace&Love
What a great band...with Bush up there..I had "We don't get fooled again..." repeating in my head. These guys deserve the honor, but the frame in which it is placed and by whom it is placed is ludicrous.
@MrMecagoenlamierda Daltrey and Townsend accepted the honor from the Kennedy Center and the American people through their representative, who back then happened to be the person occupying the office of President of the United States. I am no fan of Bush either, and I think that he is the worst president the U.S. has ever had to endure, but in this case I am glad that Daltrey and Townsend were recognized in this manner by the highest elected official in the U.S. Mil saludos a la bella Argentina!
The first time I heard of the Who was at age seven in 1979, when my parents watched evening news reports about the Cincinnati tragedy. I remember the Who logo on the screen with the words '11 dead'. I thought for a minute they were a terrorist group! Speaking of terrorists, can't say I love it that Bush was presenting the honor, but in this case it's the office of the president of the United States that he's representing, so I'm cool w/it.
'that asshole Elvis" was also asked about his politics on Vietnam at a press conference during the early 70's(probably also on youtube) & he replied 'I'm just an entertainer I'd just as soon keep my opinions to myself" . If only Lennon had felt the same & had not tortured us with lame 'sleep in's' with Yoko giving weak interviews about captialism,war&peace. The point was put to buchanastreet about Bono shaking hands with Bush respectively ,cause thats what he did i dont care about U2's music.
I love the Who and congratulations to them but in the same respect it is ironic that George W. Bush would honor them in that he represents everything that the what was rebelling against in my opinion.
Hearing Bush say this stuff is pretty uncomfortable. When he reads off some of the songs they were famous for, it's kinda hard to watch! I don't know why.
LOL, ok, I really had no intention of making a political statement on here, until Bush found a way to drop 9/11 even when talking about Tho Who. Oh, it also would've been awesome to see what Keith Moon would've done at the White House.
wow, pete and rog behaved themselves!!!! what an awkward combination---bush and the Who...but GOD, what an honour...CONGRATS TO PETE AND ROG, and god speed to Keith and John!
I won't argue with that they were (one of?) the best rock band(s) in history, but tell me, what precisely did Bush do that made him so horrible, compared to such folk as Buchanan, Johnson, Johnson, Hoover, Harding, Wilson?
actually a lot of what "this buchanan guy" is saying is quite true, bush did conspire with laden before 9/11 and that's what both me and michael moore will continue to believe till our lives end!!!!!!
In the spirit of equal time with regard to the smear of personal politics, the only thing that would have made this occasion any better would be that it had been presented by Joe B., Kamala H., and Nancy P…
I guess he didn´t want to be unpopular with any of his fans... the old would probobly´ve been just as mad at him... elvis just wanted to be popular and sell records...
Obvioulsy you hold very strong opinions about this...more so than I. I am a musician and as such I have found Townshend's music the most fulfilling. I look to no artist for guidance. I look to them for entertainment. I move to my internal compass. So I care mcuh more for the beautiful tablature on "I'm One" from Quadrophenia than I do him shaking hands with Bush or whomever. He's in his sixties now. Give him a break. Enjoy his gift of music. Leave politics to another blog. Peace.
A Great tribute, and with honors by the President they the whole band deserves this.Pete made a buness decision that he later qouted that he regretted the desion he had made .The show must go on, a very very tough decision, but my thoughts areI must say they should of came out to stage and announced Johns death and canceled the show right there THE WHO MUST STILL GO ON THOUGH,4444jcm
I cannot possibly care less about the politics of the situation. The Who did a great thing by New York, who were and are the seat of their American fan base. This could have been given by any seated President. It happened to be done by Bush. Their acceptance of the honor (and it is quite an honor) has nothing to do with politics and Europeans who paid nothing for their defense for 60 years have no leg to stand on in international affairs in any case. So, again, calm down.
..and if He ISNT a facist maybe Mehar Baba wasnt just a smoke screen all this time, & he has indeed tried to become as open as Mehar Baba,cause Mehar Baba would have also met & listened George Bush ,dont know why ? But he had a principle of a very Bhuddist view of not judging or reacting to anyone no matter what they've done like most of us do.
As a who fan, I am so happy that they got this honor! I love The Who! Rest in peace Keith and John, and long live Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend!!!
Everyone needs to quit hating on Bush...this is about The Who! Chill out.
Absolutely one of the top 5 rock and roll pairs ever !!
no kidding! i can't wait to see videos of the musical tribute, especially Love Reign O'er Me.
This is so beautiful-I was not aware of all that they did-thank you.
I'll stay away from politics here...God, I love Pete.
I love Pete.
I love that man.
They live in the kind of world where those who don't share their opinion deserve to be decapitated.
W. Bush, living proof of "meet the new boss same as the old boss"
Excellent and thorough answer, thankyou!
"...fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again. YEEEEEEAAAAHHHHH!" - G.W. Bush
I can put my politics on hold for this.
Love these guys, well deserved Pete and Roger. The Who is the best!
This is a moment in rock history, who cares about the introductions! It's about the band!
This is surreal.
Not a Bush fan, but he did a nice job here. Pete and Roger were touched by on'the honor which was well deserved.
@HREIII
Thank you. I don't remember my first exposure, but it has been a good 40 years or better.
That was a great speech, all politics aside.
the fact that bush was involved at all is a total shame.
I'm so happy for Pete and Roger....a well deserved honor.
Oh stifle already. You probably voted for Biden. Which is a bigger shame.
He mentioned him. I was feeling the same way you did. Thought he was gonna forget to mention Moon! But, he does later on in the speech.
This honor is normal
Tommy, is the Soul of the Man
The Who being inducted by Mr What the fuck. Priceless.
Amazing the amount of anger and hostility, even calls for death and murder is found in comments on a video to recognize the contributions to 2 exceptional musicians (wold that it had been all 4)
All of you that are so tolerant, open and progressive and are letting your true selves brim over should be ashamed.
@Teflon65 thanks... I guess I must've missed it.
Insanelyinsane Zeppelin are excellent. The Who are excellent in their right. Two different musical styles.
they look like two school boys waiting outside the principals office
What does Bush say at 3:34?
@5jerry1 Well said my man. I am old enough to remember seeing htem on the first time on an ABC weekday afternoon TV show from L.A. I donpt remember the name, was it Where the Action Is? or something else. Anyway, they were so great then and I have been a fan ever since. I was born in 1954. I am glad that they still rock. When they leave the planet, it will be my wakeup call that soon it will be my time to go too
the who kick ass!
the rock list goes like this
1. the who
2. the rolling stones
3.the animals
@jimmmmybrady I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
I think he gets them, kind of. The words he read/said were all absolutely true, that is for sure.
Yeah me too.I wonder if he actually wrote it though or if he's just reading somebody else's words?Can't help wondering if he really knows anything about the who?
Pete and Roger are gentleman..
Was such a nice thing that the NYFD was there. WOW
@armyveteran101st
thank you for saying that, i sometimes wonder if i am the only sane person left...
Position and name?
My favourite is Who´s next... by numbers... eh no not in my favs, but SELL OUT is just GREAT... just what they did here..
I hear Dylan´s fans are angry ALL the time as Bobby´s not acting the way they want him to... he´s selling his songs to advertisements and whatever... would be painful to be this angry all the time... !
Don´t care about U2.. "With or without you" was a nice song... in the 80´s.... and bono... Some think he´ll get the Nobel Peace Prize - yeah, right!
He never mentioned Keith? :l
agree 100%
haha, i know!...i have to say, i was actually surprised at Bush...although bush probably didn't write this (in fact, i know that he didn't...lol), but it was actually a wonderful gesture to the guys, and overall, it was a well written speech...except that one bit around 3:44...but it's def. a great honour for pete and rog, and i know they'll honour keith and john as well..
the real problem i have with the speech is that he calls john the simple anchor... any who fan knows hes much more thn that... hes as important to the who as any other member....
LoL .... same here!
only because the Who remain one of my favourite bands!
quote of the day: "drummer keith moon wouldn't hit one note if he could hit 50"
Bush was a wild one as a...20-30 something...I would bet he "put on earphones"and played air drums to Keith Moon
@vewsong well said!
Bush doesn't screw up the speech when it really matters, and The Who matter
@buchananstreet
that was MY opinion my dear.
Stufu. He beat two opponents. Get over it.
@IlliniJake
MOST OF THEM ARE ...BUT TO .....YES THATS CRAZY ALLRIGHT
Sorry George, the song is called Who Are you', not 'who are You'. His inflection tells me he's not really a fan.
That's exactly what I was thinking
And G.W.B. doesn't even think for a microsecond that his mentioning "Won't Get Fooled Again" has any kind of irony to it, does he???
@MrMecagoenlamierda Daltrey and Townsend accepted the honor from the Kennedy Center and the American people through their representative, who back then happened to be the person occupying the office of President of the United States. I am no fan of Bush either, and I think that he is the worst president the U.S. has ever had to endure, but in this case I am glad that Daltrey and Townsend were recognized in this manner by the highest elected official in the U.S. Mil saludos a la bella Argentina!
Barbra Streisand is thinking 'why couldn't they have honored me next year?'.
I thought it was perfect. Bush should’ve presented her his rear end for the kiss.
It's a bit unsettling to see my least favorite president of all time honor my favorite rock and roll band of all time.
Yeah? How’s he looking now?
The first time I heard of the Who was at age seven in 1979, when my parents watched evening news reports about the Cincinnati tragedy. I remember the Who logo on the screen with the words '11 dead'. I thought for a minute
they were a terrorist group!
Speaking of terrorists, can't say I love it that Bush was presenting the honor, but in this case it's the office of the president of the United States that he's representing, so I'm cool w/it.
"Their concert tickets ALWAYS sold out"
@pkgannon but they did ;)
'that asshole Elvis" was also asked about his politics on Vietnam at a press conference during the early 70's(probably also on youtube) & he replied 'I'm just an entertainer I'd just as soon keep my opinions to myself" . Ah dont understand your point big man, Bush was never in The Who, was he?
@bluesboy25000 Thats exactly what I was thinking as I watched it. It's like, "cool" but at the same time, "wtf?"
beside the piont but... Roger's so fucking handsome!
What does Bush actualy say that everyone laughs at?? I honestly can't understand him...
I think they blow the Beatles away.
Damn right they do.
@buchananstreet Forgot to mention, I'm 49 and retired. Don't think You'll make what I'm worth the rest of your existance on this planet.
@OfficialDemocrat Ah the "peace loving" left chimes in again against the "haters."
@Tr0f0bi exactly my friend!
Bush is great in this one!
well said winterb1ues...
@arouska He heard plenty in his wild days
I love the Who and congratulations to them but in the same respect it is ironic that George W. Bush would honor them in that he represents everything that the what was rebelling against in my opinion.
I see you know latin - errare humanum est means that it´s human to fail... yes it is...
that's because this speech was written for him... none of the things he's saying are actually his own words...
Pete at 3:02, "I think i'm having a heart attack."
Hearing Bush say this stuff is pretty uncomfortable. When he reads off some of the songs they were famous for, it's kinda hard to watch! I don't know why.
ha and people said bush was dumb seems pretty smart now
LOL, ok, I really had no intention of making a political statement on here, until Bush found a way to drop 9/11 even when talking about Tho Who. Oh, it also would've been awesome to see what Keith Moon would've done at the White House.
"...still resignates(???) in the industry?" Didn't he mean "resonate?"
@billallman nope he sure does not! lol
Noone knows what it's like to be the bad man. Well, mr Bush surely does!
3:34 babyshambler: he said, "your english isn't all that good".
wow, pete and rog behaved themselves!!!! what an awkward combination---bush and the Who...but GOD, what an honour...CONGRATS TO PETE AND ROG, and god speed to Keith and John!
at least GWB did SOMETHING good in office
maybe he should have read through the speech before making it.
first time he got anything right
I bet Bush has never listened to The'OO
tsss pete's face at 1:01
I won't argue with that they were (one of?) the best rock band(s) in history, but tell me, what precisely did Bush do that made him so horrible, compared to such folk as Buchanan, Johnson, Johnson, Hoover, Harding, Wilson?
smitty01209…….you want to know what made him so horrible? Lying about WMD.
actually a lot of what "this buchanan guy" is saying is quite true, bush did conspire with laden before 9/11 and that's what both me and michael moore will continue to believe till our lives end!!!!!!
Buchananstreet: Calm the f**k down. Seriously.
@bluesboy25000 I could´nt of said it any better!
Did you try to boycott Bono for meeting with, shaking hands & talking to Bush ? Sunday Bloody Sunday.
In the spirit of equal time with regard to the smear of personal politics, the only thing that would have made this occasion any better would be that it had been presented by Joe B., Kamala H., and Nancy P…

@HREIII
Yeah, I bet. Probably had some Keith Moon moments while he was on coke.
