I'll have to see if I can find it! Hakon Jarl was a pretty popular subject choice for Scandinavian composers. There's Smetana's tone poem, as well as incidental music by J.P.E. Hartmann (Emil's father), Carl Reinecke's second symphony (a German though, not Scandinavian) and an opera by Hjalmar Borgström.
First time to hear this wonderful work. The orchestra playing was magnificent.

Brillant Symphonic poem of Smetana, deeply romantic and brillantly interpreted by Rafael Kubelik
Interesting subject for a symphonic poem. Emil Hartmann also wrote a symphonic poem by the same title.
That part about the son is a direct quote from Smetana. He might not have known too much about the topic!

Why in the description does it say his "only" son? Didn't he have more than one? Namely Eirik Haakonsson? Great piece regardless.
