1:20-1:25 Beverly Sills really spits out her vocal chords on this phrase! She may have had the voice of a Lucia Popp but she had the spirit and intensity of a Maria Callas.
One of the first operas I ever saw was Anna Bolena with Beverly Sills. It was way before the days of subtitles, so I wasn’t really sure what was happening, but I thought she was brilliant. And let me set the record straight......she sounded infinitely better in the theater than she did on rudimentary tape recorders, as well as studio records.
I was fortunate to grow up hearing Sills in some of her most loved roles, especially her Traviata and Lucia. I so wish I could have heard her Anna Bolena. Also her Manon. She was and will be the finest voice of the 20th Century, not to detract from Sutherland, Callas or Tebaldi. Beverly was simply a consummate musician and artist. There was no to match her. We will never see her like again.
@KathrynARyder Is it OK if I agree 100% with you? I love Beverly in this role and it is so interesting to hear the difference between her studio and 'live' performances. What a singing actress Beverly was! Thanks so much for your comment Kathryn! ;-)!
The key of Coppia Iniqua, dictates that unless she transposed it down ( which I doubt as it is low... already) that the final note would be an E flat (of course interpolated).
You MAY say again and again and AGAIN just how A May ZING our Beloved Beverly's singing was!! New prescription for special calming tabs winging it's way to you!!
@Remalia19 One of the startling things about Beverly was that every single note that she sang was very carefully thought out. Her liberties were always tastefully executed and so far no one has come close to being comparable. We have had some very interesting discussions on my Facebook site, 'The Beverly Sills Crazies' about Beverly's Anna Bolena. One member who is currently writing a new book on Beverly uploaded Bev's personal score ..it really was a sight to behold!
Thanks. I don't know the opera well. I saw it at the met last year -- or was it the year before? -- and that is it. I did not line the met production so I kind of lost interest by the end. I think sills is fantastic here and I am this motivated to listen to the opera once more. :)
E flat or D? Whatever, crazy note -- and after singing a whole opera. But even more impressive is all the singing before the high note. The drama and precision of her musical statements. She makes sense of the thing.
@KathrynARyder You HEARD Beverly live???!! I would have happily donated limbs and internal organs just to have had that opportunity Kathryn!!! Once again you speak my language when iit comes to Beverly's ornamentation. I have noticed that no one has ever attempted to copy her Lucia mad scene cadenzas either....I wonder why??? Roland really was a superstar in his own right but was never recognised as such. Todays sopranos really leave me cold! Message in your inbox!
The best coloratura EVER. No one comes close.

I would have donated body parts just to have met with Beverly. Love your last 3 sentences, I concur fully!
Thanks for all the great uploads of my favorite opera singer. She really was an amazing artist and person.
You are entirely welcome! I Beverly is definitely my all time favourite opera singer too Bubbadeaux. My tail wags every time I hear her name! :)
petelovesbevsills Pity she didn't sing the leading roles in Bellini's BEATRICE DI TENDA, IL PIRATA and LA STRANIERA!
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH this is thrilling ! You rarely hear this type of amazing singing anymore
You don't. And you won't, sadly.
Outstanding ! the E flat at the end was fab!
Donizetti's Tudor Trilogy . . . after 'Bubbles' . . . no one.

@Remalia19 nice to have you on board with the Crazies!!
A. May. ZING. That would be incredible if it had been recorded in a studio... but LIVE? Oh my nerves. May I say again, A - MAY - ZING!!!
