  • A group of children from Eardisland, a small Herefordshire village, undertake a project to investigate its history: They want to find out how some places and landmarks have changed and how others have remained much the same over long periods of time. Also, why some village features are particularly important, such as the river that runs through it, the manor of Burton Court and the church. The theme is continuity and change which they study using a variety of methods. These include observations, questions to local people and to experts, oral history, using photographs and documents and some special techniques and equipment. They know the people they will meet and they are supervised by a person with local knowledge. The methods they use should enable others to follow their examples, to study their own environments, whether this is within a city, a suburb, a town, or rural village. History is everywhere and can be uncovered by those enthusiastic enough to do so, often with surprising results. It is important that children should never undertake such work without the necessary supervision of parents, guardians or teachers.
The video and book which accompanies it, were derived by the Eardisland Oral History and Archaeological Projects Group. This work could not have been undertaken with the help and funding support of the Local Heritage Initiative. This is a national grant scheme administered by the Countryside Agency and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Nationwide Building Society.
