  • This episode covers the entire battle of Attu aka "Operation Landcrab" part of the Aleutian Islands campaign during WW2.
Often overlooked, the two week long battle of Attu was akin to many of the battles in the south Pacific in its brutality and loss of life. The battle culminated in a massive suicidal banzai charge that would have made even the last samurai Saigo Takamori proud.
The batlte of attu saw 15,000 men of Major General Albert Brown’s 7th division, under the overall command of Admiral Francis Rockwell face off against 2630 of 2nd district North Seas Garrison led by Colonel Yasuyo Yamasaki. The Americans would be facing numerous difficult terrains such as Jarmin's pass, Moore Rise, Clevesy pass, Fish Hook ridge, Prendergast ridge, Sarana Pass and Buffalo Ridge. Alongside the Japanese, the Americans would be facing hypothermia, trench foot and terrible frost bite.
The battle of Attu saw 2872 Japanese killed in action or commit suicide, only 28 were captured. The Americans had suffered 549 deaths, 1148 wounded, 1200 exposure injuries with another 614 sick. For Yamasaki and those who performed the final Banzai charge, it was a samurai’s death

Good video. Just a suggestion, lose the snow animation overlay on the stock footage. It works on the maps but not there.

I think I have a cousin who fought there with the 7th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop. He later earned a Silver Star later in the war either on Leyte or Okinawa. He was a platoon sergeant leading a patrol through enemy territory. He and his men came under fire from 3 machine gun nests and a sniper. He crawled around each nest, there a grenade into each one, and then shot the sniper before crawling back to reorganize his platoon. After the war he stayed in the Army and fought in Korea. Ever since the action that earned him the Silver Star, the other soldiers began calling him “The Spectacular Speck,” because his last name was Speck. Sergeant James Speck.

This is my first time knowing details about campaign in Attu island.
Almost all Japanese officers and solders died and We had no way to find what happened.
    I really appreciate Japanese translation.
    Thank you.

Hey, I'm a big fan of your Fall & Rise of China podcast as well as your videos. Always great content.
That said, a small suggestion: lose the bouncy graphics of officers. Please! Distracts from the video a great deal. At least for me.
Anyway, another great presentation of an under-represented battle!

At first I thought, wow, this small island that doesn’t have significant American immigration sure does have a lot of English ridge and valley names!
Then I realized… the names were given by “immigrants” alright.
May we strive to avoid such horrors happening ever again.

Similar to the New Guinea Campaign and other places during the Pacific war, most ridges, hills and such received names from men who died taking them.
