Lance, I don't think you fully understand the "AI race". Deepseek is open source. Anyone can copy it and run it locally. That's the major disruption. It's not a race to figure out how, the Chinese did already did that. That's known. It's a blow to the chip companies, data centers and power gen. Most of that infrastructure is no longer needed. Just a suped up Mac and an internet connection. We'll see how it all plays out.

Sure the US (or whoever) can ban the use of systems using Chinese software based on deepseek, but being open-source means that it will be available to everyone to create their own version. It'll be like other open-source software such as linux or BSD. I doubt anyone would (willingly) use a chinese version of linux, but there are other versions of linux from less-distrusted actors such as SuSE or RedHat. If the US bans the Chinese version of deepseek then we can use the German version, or some version compiled by someone in their garage, or whatever. Additionally, being open-source, anyone and everyone can look at the code used to create deepseek. If there's something in there that bothers anyone then it will be found, the code will be forked, the misfeature(s) removed, and the new version will be used instead. There will be no need to ban all versions of deepseek. Only specific versions controlled by suspected / bad actors whose software can't be verified to be based on one of the many acceptable versions of deepseek might be banned by certain institutions / governments or for certain uses.

DeepSeek is hugely cheaper than any other closed source model. Like factors of 100 less, because you can run it on your own hardware. And it performs almost as well as the best reasoning models on the market. The only downside is its ties to China, which is a huge risk since there is a chance it will be banned by the government. So we're not changing anything at the moment and just waiting to see where the dust settles. Hopefully this will reduce the token cost from the current LLM leaders.
