I feel like the visual process mapping method lacks the strategic component of studying. We answer the question of what study process we are doing in a study session and why, but we don’t answer the question of what we are studying that we are applying that study process to.
We aren’t diagnosing the task (say of doing good in an exam) to identify the critical points that maximise output per unit effort put into them. These critical points aren’t necessarily specific areas of the syllabus but could be radically different approaches to performance and how you view preparation.
I am sorry if this sounds confusing but the point of I am trying to make is that method of studying and strategy making are two different skills that are required for excelling academically and the VPM method does not acknowledge the latter.

I am a therapist. That is what I do as well for my sessions. I help my clients to map out the coping strategies that they use before the stressful event, during the stressful event, and after the stressful event. This helps to bring clarity. It allows my ciients to see how well the strategies work or not work.

I got chills when I realized how making a basic skeleton and scaffolding before the study session would make everything sooooooooo much easier and streamlined. I'm self studying for something like SATs on my country, and often it feels like I'm just stumbling my way forward, which was fine cause it's so much material that I just had to *start* somewhere. I'm definitely going to fill that VPM template! Actually, right now.

This video is really helpful! I have a small request: while the past few videos have focused on improving study techniques, I-and many of my peers-don’t actually use techniques at all. since we just started prepare for national level competitive exams and in the past we gave only school exam so there was not much to think about learning since it was so easy. Could you create a beginner video that’s tailored for complete newcomers? Thanks!

i feel that too , specially with more logical subjects like physics I am not sure how to make notes because I can't really visualise a concept or a way to think to make mind maps of or to repeatedly use flashcards for . so maybe someone can help us with explain these techniques for more logic based or mathematical subjects

@@tulikagupta5738 I feel like Justin doesn't really do a great job here. He doesn't go in great detail on what good' studying actually look like. For instance, he could create a 'study with me' video where he explains what he’s doing in real time. He’s done this before, but not with more difficult or abstract subjects like math or physics. I hope that he will go in more detail in his upcoming videos.

I've had a sour aftertaste because of how the video started. Oh, a problem that can't be seen and the only person that could help me is the one telling about the problem? I've endured the ever-present 'pain-solution' pair, and was pleased to hear two very valuable points that I feel the need to write down.
An idea that a person is a sum of their choices is rather common. It is reinforced here and applied in a sense that the outcomes of learning will stay the same, as long as the strategies one picks up along their academic career don't change. In practise, when faced with a familiar kind of challenge, a person is likely to utilize familiar tools, however suitable they may be, in favor of searching for new tools.
Which ties in nicely with another idea that observation precedes understanding precedes control. It's established that, before changing your habits, you must study them. Visual Process Mapping is the suggested framework to use here.
Value of conscious attention and conscious practise is crossdisciplinarity, really. Nice to see it here.

If you wanna do math from a conceptual level it's quite unintuitive but it works once you really get it. You have to understand the problem your solving in words first and then derive the approach to solving it then relate the formulas.
You also have to approach problems from the point of view of 'forms' understanding what form of equation you are in and what substitutions you can rewrite it as and relate that to the problem

I want to ask about mindmapping to see where i was wrong
1)So first i read the textbook and see all the subheading of the text book and see what is it about
2)I list those subheading and try to group them
3)I map out those big group as buiding the backbone
4)On each group I try how to organise and relation those subheading that included in the group
    5) I read the content in each subheading in my textbook and i try to do more group or to make analogies in some sense.
So I feel like i am still write down the detail onto my mindmap so i dont know if this is harmfull or not. And because I am studying about medical, disease, etc,… their are some detail seems not have a clue to be relevant, what should I do?

    Hi mr sung from youtube,
You make really high quality videos and in my opinion easily the best educational ones on youtube. And for that reason I have gone through many of them and learnt greatly. Since im approaching higher years in school, I realized that it would be a good idea to start learning properly.
Unfortunately I would love to join the webinars where you explore your topics more but obviously it must be paid services(i assume) as nobody would give away such good wiseness for free. However, money is not the easiest to spare right now. btw i dont believe the free webinar shenanigans because there is always cost involved in those stuff.
    TLDR:(dont bother reading above)
Anyways I have been sidetracked. So my original question was that you talk about so much stuff and i am really overwhelmed, but i would like to know which ones are the most to least relevant. Or the videos that may be the most most important to learn first for my circumstances. I did take your quiz thing(on another account) and it said my studying weaknesses were extremely bad priming and reference. And also do you have specific tips to focus on these two currently. the others are ok and i somehow got 100% on overlearning which is the most useless one super unlucky.
I know you are a great person and i do really want to improve on my learning but in your videos there is so much info that i don't know where to start off. I did borrow some textbooks for the higher years so that i could maybe prime myself but then again how should i approach reading those textbooks?
    Please help!

Why are the resources necessary to extract value from a "main learning event/lecture" put under the why column of the visual process mapping sheet? This seems like putting "to consume gasoline" as a reason for driving your car, when the "why" for that is actually "to get to work."
If the answers to the questions arent sensible, how good can such an exercise ultimately be? This seems like an opportunity to embed some instruction on how to maximize lecture time, and I have no better reasons to list than "to uncover knowledge gaps" or "to ask questions," and neither of them were put in any "why" column at all, so are they not really answers to "why" attend a lecture?

Mind maps are known as mandalas in Buddhism. Unlearning is again an Eastern concept.

    It is only one way:
If you don't see how what you study will help you in the long run you will not make it through.

All of this is just the socratic method of questioning or street epistemology repackaged as "visual process mapping".

Yeah like even though you said this isn't something I should do, I do think this is not for me even after doing the mapping.
We inspect the way we are learning and improve on them to find things that are holding us back in our techniques and the ways we use them, but I don't have them/have really little of them to begin with.
I don't prestudy, I don't take any note, I don't spend time studying on my own so what I need now is some kind of technique right?
The only problem I'm having right now is I'm remembering what I learned and understood as a way to review for upcoming exams/quizzes and that is not really sustainable as I'm not sure if they're all that good. I can actually do curveball questions fine, understand the information thrown at me with relative ease (or I thinks so)
Like if I don't have much technique at the moment (other than my basically minimalist note taking and my haphazard reviews before tests) then I should add techniques right?

      @eggriceu 14 днів тому

What he said was; you don't just need a better technique, you're better off unlearning the techniques that aren't working for you. This is mostly targeted towards people who are like looking for the "best techniques" and have probably accumulated a lot of them without reflecting on whether they really work for them.
If this is not you, ignore the advice duh.

I hope that someone in these comments can help me bc I have one comprehension issue but it's an older video of his: at 1:20 ( ua-cam.com/video/3uDROfnx2TE/v-deo.htmlsi=4ukuHkBhb1_KEvEThe ) he says that we're supposed to use pre-study in order to go through all lectures of said week and turn that into a sort of mind map to build upon but before that he says to separate notes per topic. My question is, since most lectures in a week would be on entirely different topics, would we do one (during pre-study) per topic or one for all of them combined? Thanks in advance! (I'm starting my Psychology studies next week)
