So many of the the things you mentioned are exactly how we helped daddy get through life. He had many head bumps and landed in the middle of us kids laying on the floor, in his known path to get to his chair but thankfully daddy was stick thin and no one was hurt.
Fantastic - your personality is gentle and comfortable and you explain it beautifully! I will be sharing this with my students with vision loss and their teams :) Cheers!
Great video Steve and York. As someone who has been registered blind since 1997 I agree with all you've said, being blind can be very isolating especially in social situations. I often think people feel awkward and don't really know how to interact with a visually impaired person, just ask what help is needed, don't make assumptions. Take care and stay safe both 🦮🐾🐾
Hey Steve, thanks for this video. I used this video to thank my parishioners, because they are so good at doing these things. I shared this video on my Facebook and thanked them for these basics that they follow. I imagine they will share your video to. Innoway, I have a little bit of an advantage, since I am a public person and I am not afraid to teach people publicly how to handle those of us who are blind or visually impaired. We all do this in our own way and I’m glad that you are doing this through your videos.
That’s fantastic. And thanks for sharing. It’s amazing how helpful people are willing to be when they know what to do sometimes. I hope you’re going okay. All the best. Cheers!
Hi Steve I have RP as well, your videos are great, you have inspired me to get a paddle board can't wait for the spring to come here in Toronto Canada ❄️👍
Thanks heaps. That’s great about the paddleboard. Start out on a lake or somewhere with very flat water. Go with a friend and you will love it. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
great video.. I found out the other day that I had run into a college classmate of mine I had not seen in 20 years but I did not recognize him. He thought I was being rude or was mad at him for some reason.. I told him that I had no idea it was him.. I will share this on my FB page so hopefully this will help folks out..
Things like that have happened to me. If only others knew what we were going through. Hopefully this video will create a little awareness. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Thank you for your video, my family and I are attending a new group and the leader is blind. I have no idea how to behave in a socially acceptable way around a blind person because up until now I’ve never interacted with someone who is blind. Thank you for the insight.
My biggest frustration is with people who say “hey, if you need a ride somewhere, just let me know.“, But that leaves a ball in our court to ask them to come take us somewhere. It is so nice when someone we know actually invites us to come along with them. “Hey, I’m going to the grocery store tomorrow, would you like to come along?” Or “hey a couple of us are going to that new wine bar on Saturday, would you like to join us?” Really makes us feel included and doesn’t make us feel like we are a burden for having to call you and ask you to please come get us for some thing.
I can definitely relate to what you are saying. People mean well. But it is a hard thing to do to call out of the blue and ask for something like a ride to the shops. Even if somebody has said they are happy to help. I wish I had all the answers. Unfortunately I don't. I do put myself out there though. I will call and ask sometimes. It just depends on what mood you're in. Thanks for watching. All the best. Have a great day!
Hi Steve, I'm not visually impaired but I really enjoyed your video. It was helpful to learn more about what someone with blindness deals with and how I might help if needed. You and York make a great team!
Hi Steve Loving your videos. My Son has just been diagnosed with RP so We have been learning a lot from your channel. Please make some more videos. I hope that you are keeping well.
I’m really glad you’re getting something out of a Videos. Yes I’m doing well and so is York. Hopefully will have some more videos for you soon. Have a great day! And all the best.
Thank you, Steve. Please let me say that you are very kind. You have a calm heart. Sometimes, I believe we see too much even sighted. Maybe that is why I enjoy puppy raising so that my eyes look down a lot when checking. Covid here helps me to keep safe distance with focus more so on the pup and vice versa. We all have challenges and we admire you for putting this out there. You are honest. You and your wife stay well. We look forward to your videos. Give your superhero belly rubs from your viewers.
Great perspective. I learnt something. Also: I note that York started nude and magically got dressed during the clip. Magic of TV? ;) (not that it matters in the slightest)
Thanks so much for this, super helpful for me with being more helpful around folks with more vision loss than me and some good ideas to ask friends to do for me as I'm losing some of my sight. I really appreciate these videos as they feel like natural learning from someone who has loads more experience and not so medicalized as some of the professionally available stuff. Thanks!
Yes we are both doing great. Glad you like the videos. And thanks for all of your efforts as a puppy razor. People like me definitely appreciate it. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
Hi Suzy and Betty, York and I are both well. But it’s been a busy year. We do plan on making some more videos soon. And I will let you know what we’ve been up to in the video. It’s just been a bit of a crazy time. I hope you’re both well. Thanks for thinking of us. Have a great day!
Great video, Steve. One of the most frustrating things that happens to me is when someone stands in my office door at work and says hello. I’ll ask who it is and they answer, oh, you know who this is.
Thank you Steve! I just found your channel and will watch your videos! My husband lost his sight in a car accident 4 years ago but also has some cognitive issues because of the brain trauma. Its been very hard to help him as he feels so lost in "space" but he is making great strides even so many years later. Your videos may be great for him to listen to as well! Wish we could get him a guide dog but that is not possible :(
Hello from Arizona, USA. I am visually challengenged as well.. Nystagmus and it is no fun.. I have a pet small dog, no family now. Friends? well, I stay to myself. Nice to meet u. Sue in AZ.
Hi Susan. Pleased to meet you too. I’m glad you have the company of your little dog. I don’t think people understand the loneliness that can come with blindness and vision impairment. Stay safe and look after yourself. Thanks for watching one of my videos and have a great day!
I don’t think most people understand how isolating it can be. I’ve found joining a few groups definitely helps. Thanks for watching and all the best. Cheers!
Yes. I lost most of my sight in just a couple of days. I felt like someone had shut me up in a cardboard box. Like I couldn’t really connect to anyone through the barrier. It’s SO isolating. I have one small point of sight and it feels like being shut in a box peeking out a small hole. You are even a bit isolated from yourself since you can no longer see your own face in the mirror. It is so very annoying that people are so freaked out about covid isolation. Blindness says “covid, hold my beer”. Blindness is permanent not just a temporary isolation and you can’t connect using zoom, Skype etc like the sighties do. Covid isolation is blindness light version but it’s continually talked about while blindness is ignored as if it’s an embarrassment.
just found this video, excellent! A lot of the videos made by blind people or low vision, people deal with technology, very few deal with interpersonal relationships, which is most of our lives. there is a conference coming up in May that I would like to go to difficulty as I need to find someone to go with from my city and I have been putting feelers out. No one is responding, I have put posts on local message boards, indicating my interest in attending this conference and that I have a vision disability so in addition to going with someone that can drive, someone or some people who would be willing to help me do some navigation in the environment would be useful. in compensation, I will cover the cost of the hotel room. it is not working, I have not found anyone at this point. And of course, it needs to be someone that I could trust. Any suggestions or recommendations? 5:19
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you got something out of the video. I wish I had the answers for you. Maybe contact your local vision loss providers. Maybe they have local Support groups. But I'm not sure. Wishing you all the best. Cheers!
I haven’t made any for awhile. But I do plan on making some more. It’s just been a busy year also. Hopefully I’ll have another video for you soon. Thanks for enquiring. Cheers!
Hi am Tasha i am loosing my vision and this just i don't kno it has me super emotional i just yeah nevermind that just i want to share some stuff as well about the isolation aspects hhhhhmmmmhhh well i live in new York city and when i tell people that i am visually impaired they start to become sneaky and manipulative so yeah i don't want to be to long winded but yeah i kno. ...how painful it is to not pick up on visual cues from any length of disstance it make me very vigilant around people i had to stop at 1:46 cause i. Didn't expect you to touch on that lol this is why i am on youtube so much. Ok have a great day and thank you
So many of the the things you mentioned are exactly how we helped daddy get through life. He had many head bumps and landed in the middle of us kids laying on the floor, in his known path to get to his chair but thankfully daddy was stick thin and no one was hurt.

Thanks for watching. I’m glad you found it useful. Really appreciate it. Have a great day!
Hahah I love it when people still 'automatically' ask for my driver's license... even when the Guide Dog is clearly visible by my side!
What a great video, it would be so helpful to others and to me if everyone had the chance to realize these things…
Very good information! Thank you for sharing!
And thanks for watching. Have a great day!
Great video! Helps us better understand how small changes in our behavior can make a huge difference for a visibly impaired person.
Thanks. I'm glad you got something out of the video. Have a great day!
That was beautifully said. Thank you!
