Today we tested the 3/8" Drive 90-Tooth Teardrop Ratchet 8" 81211T vs the older 84-tooth 81211F. Amazingly they are really similar with little differences and they performed very similarly in the strength test.
GEARWRENCH® is proud to roll out its new line of 90-tooth ratchets bolstering one of its signature product categories in the process.
These tools were unveiled at the SEMA Show this past November which I attended and stated the 90-tooth ratchet line is stronger and provides better access, all while being more comfortable on the hands of professional mechanics who turn them countless times a day.
As it turns out it would appear that the 90T is very comparable to the 84T in terms of strength and the new line of ratchets provides a 4-degree swing arc for greater access in tight spaces compared to the previous 4.5 so it's not really that large of a difference.
The 120XP from Gearwrench provides a 3-degree swing arc.
I still believe that Gearwrench wproduced a nice engineered, high-strength pawl extremely similar to that of the 84T and it does provide increased durability and continues to exceed ASME torque performance requirements.
For those who prefer a chrome handle, the full polish versions are easy to clean and ergonomic to be easier on the hands. For those who prefer it, the solvent-resistant cushion grip is comfortable but tough enough to handle shop life.
I actually prefer ratchet handles for the different season's Hot vs COLD!
Available now are 13 individual standard and Flex Head ratchets to go with six sets. Seven are full polished chrome and six will feature the cushion grip, and all except the 3/8-inch stubby flex head ratchet are available in ¼-inch, 3/8-inch, and ½-inch drives.

270 pounds is impressive but we should be comparing the slop in the gear drive not the failure point.
Isn't the whole point of having more teeth is to take out the slop and have less of a swing arc?

I 100% agree, I was hoping to see a teardown review of the internals and the backlash comparison that he recently did.... all these “test to failure” points don’t serve a purpose (at all) for me in my shop.... I’ve legitimately had/returned a 120xp xxl spline drive ratchet because there was more “real world” swing arc than my buddies “platinum “ 72tooth version. aLSO no one takes into comparing socket size manufacturing (ie: comparing the socket/jaw width13mm snap on to a 13 gearwrench or 13mm icon.... - side note the 13mm icons are a couple thou” tighter than a snap-on however icon clearly uses a “softer” metallurgy.....
pLease do a backlash test... personally I love my 120xp ratchets, but my 90t Carlyle and 80t snap-on give it a run for it’s money....
Besides all these failure points are breaking at the limit of a 3/8” anvil, anything knowingly above 200ft lbs you should be using a half inch drive!

Yeah, I'm sure Gearwrench uses the same 3/8 drive in both wrenches lol. Of course they break at the same torque.
I have breaker bars for anything I can't turn with the ratchet directly. The smoothness, feel and back drag are much better criteria for a ratchet imo.

I agree, but you have to admit, it’s fun to know what they are capable, especially if you ever find yourself in a bind and need to use tools in ways they aren’t meant to be.
Can't agree more. Strong enough is strong enough. I care a lot more for how precise and durable the tool is, not the brute strength per se. If you are using the ratchet like a breaker bar, well then use a breaker instead.
I am happy with all the Gearwrench tools I have, they work and hold up well and are a good value and yea I use them every day at work.
I have their ratchets, ratchet/wrenches, and long line wrenches.
My 8 and 9 mm's are slightly bent. And that is pretty common with them.
But everything performs great.
I have their 1/2in sockets too. They're thick and strong. I've used them to rip off locking lug nuts, and they don't seem to mind at all.
Other sockets don't survive being hammered onto a lug nut.

Great vid. I’d suggest explaining what is occurring as it relates to the failure mode. You testing the UTS of the steels used for the anvil. I have yet to see a failure caused by a loss of grip between the gear and pawl. The failures you depict are the direct result of ductile failures, also known as plastic deformation. The combination of excessive energy/force being applied at slowed rate, resulting in the propagation of a fracture that leads to material separation. This is only an assumption, as I’ve not seen the test specimens. I’d love to perform a fracture analysis on some of your specimens; possibly even looking at some FTIR to determine the materials used by some of the manufacturers.
Gearwrench is no fool, just add 6 teeth on the gear and put a little yellow stripe on the handle, bam $10 more for the same dam ratchet.
Same type of failure. The 3/8" drive gear is only so strong. (The 3/8" square.)
And I bet that the 3/8" square twisted quite a bit before it gave.

Would you consider testing the Nepros 90 tooth ratchet (NBR390)? Many on GJ consider Nepros to exceed Snap-on in quality. It would be interesting to see where it lands in pure strength. Thanks for doing these tests. Can't wait to see the German ratchets soon.
I bought a set of 3 ratchets 1/4, 3/8 , and 1/2 in the Canadian Tire Maximum line , they resemble what you have. They were on sale $50 CDN.
I originally fell "in love" with GEARWRENCH back in 2004 when my tools where stolen from my truck.
The "Pass-through" Ratchet Set was AWESOME! Only downfall was that the Pawls never really held onto the socket very well... Great for Tie Rods and All-Thread!

Couldn’t believe it was that close. Those two ratchets were really consistent and purchased 3 months apart.
A couple of weeks ago I was on the GearWrench website and I seen that the price of their new 90T 3/8 Flex Head (locking) with the new orange comfort grip was $101.00 . . . . surprisingly it is just $24 less than a Mac Tools Max Axis 90. . . . . If GearWrench keeps going up with those prices, they might as well become a tool truck brand (oh, wait a minute, they're already doing that too)
Prices on web sites like Gearwrench and SK are not real retail pricing as far as I have seen as resellers have deals everywhere on almost all the items .
That's true, the company it's self always shows full retail. And nobody pays that price. Even though i agree that GW is jacking up prices for there new stuff, but not even close to Mac axis ratchets
Where's the best place to get GW products at a reasonable price? I checked Amazon and the price is $39 for the 90T 3/8 ratchet that's used in this video..
They make a better product so course it's going to cost more. If you don't like the price of the newer, better stuff, by the cheaper old model.
If anyone else was wondering on a different video / torque meter setup... The 120XP got about 239ft lbs before failing.
Working down in crammed engine bays, the level of back drag on a ratchet is just as important as ultimate strength. Let's get a super sensitive inch/lb meter such as that used for setting up differentials and do some real testing. When you get to fish something such as the power steering pump out Buick that is buried deep in the engine bay, you'll get where I'm coming from. That said, ultimate strength only tells me half the story.

Ko-ken 3726Z 72T Only had it a couple of days. It's a little 7" long 3/8 drive non-locking flex ratchet.
Only 72 teeth, but boy! Is it smooth. Almost no backdrag and the head is as small as some 1/4" ratchets.
My new favorite ratchet. It comes in an 11" size too.
Start measuring how much take up/slack is in the action of these new ratchets you test, that would be a good way to show people which ones would be better for tight areas.

I have been happy with GearWrench tools since they came out with the first ratcheting wrenches. While their warranty has been inconsistent over the years, and haven’t had to warranty that much and their ratchet rebuild kits aren’t too expensive. The other big bonus is that they go on sale often enough that I have been able to set build GearWrench tools at a price competitive to cheaper brands and sometimes at a per tool pricing near HF.
When do they go on sale? No sales currently.

Love your videos and I understand the 90 and 84 aren’t cross compatible but I’m very curious if the 1/2” 120XP is swappable with the 1/2” 90T because GW doesn’t make a dual-material handle 1/2” 120XP ratchet which is rather unfortunate because I just bought the long flex head 3/8” / 1/4” dual material 120XP and I LOVE them and want a 1/2” but the only make a full chrome version and I already have the 84 Tooth so getting the 90T is pointless unless the120XP and 90T aren’t compatible
Hey Chris. I'm wondering if the guys of the Gearwrench 3/8, 84 and 90 tooth ratchets will fit in the 1/4 ratchets bodies? I know this conversion is only for tight places, there is a lot of torque loss going to the smaller body. So many people try to say that Matco and Gearwrench are the same, then this should work I feel. SnapOn and Matco both do this conversion. Just curious what your thoughts are on this, maybe even a future video.
In the market for a long handle 1/2" ratchet. I've got a Gearwrench 90 tooth 17" flex head, but I could really use a longer handle and a locking option. I have been eyeballing the Gearwrench 90 tooth 24" locking flex head or the 120xp 24" fixed handle. Would you choose one of those over the other? What else would you recommend to compare?
Is the torque number higher at the anvil? The adapters reduce working torque and therefore a smaller value is shown?
what kind of ratchet set was that? i’m getting into some gear wrench tools and i can really find for a good price is 200+ piece sets from home depot but they don’t ever let you know what kind of ratchet is in them
I bought the Gearwrench 106 set with the 90T but I am not sure I like the plastic cushioned handles, even though they look nice. It seems those type of handles end up getting dirty and often fall apart after years of use. I got it at HomeDepot and I am thinking of taking it back.

@@ClientGraphics Nice! my long handle is a pittsburgh pro. my standard length handle full polish 120xp 3/8" ratchet has broken loose stubborn brake caliper bolts with the help of a cheater pipe/floor jack handle. I now have 1/2" metric sockets, and I'm waiting on my 1/2" 84 tooth standard length ratchet to get here next week.

You can't be sure one of the internals is larger than the other with a quick one-handed measurement like that. If you're not completely perpendicular, of if you're measuring the peaks of two opposite teeth on one, vs four teeth on the other, or worse yet, measuring opposite troughs, your measurements could easily differ by more than the 0.08mm you got. You need to hold four peaks roughly perpendicular to the pointy part of the callipers, then lightly squeeze & wiggle the callipers until you get the minimum if you want to consistently get an error of

I work at advance. The tec correct 84tooth is the same tool just rebranded! I got the long handle 1/2 inch 84tooth on a red tag sale for $5! Couldn't pass it up

how about the gearwrench quick release ratchet?
Could you add swing arc and especially back drag to your testing? More often instead of trying to get lots of torque, I am trying to turn a loose nut that I can't get my finger in there to remove. Having a lot of back drag means the ratchet will never click and I won't be able to remove the nut. Likewise with the swing arc, if I don't have a lot of room to swing, fine teeth help a lot, but how far to swing to get to next click, but then how much swing back to get the force on the bolt. e.g. swing 5 degrees to next click, but because of slop, the torque doesn't start applying until 2 degrees are picked up, thereby only giving 3 degrees of useful "work" per 5 degrees of swing.
Back drag can be so low that we are talking ounce-inches. I looked at the prices in a few devices and we are talking at least $130 for an analog tool and 3-4 times that for a digital one. I could make something but then the accuracy becomes a question so if you know anyone that might want to be a sponsor or has a 0-16 inch ounce torque device have them email me.

This way the bolts etc would be to spec.

The Carlyle locking flex heads and the Blackhawk fine tooth pear head ratchets have heads that are pretty damn narrow.
Do you have a way to monitor the heat of the metal when it breaks

Both pawls were still in good working order. Same with the teeth on the gears. The both had just the anvil failure.
Is it possible to tell me how much tooth is the Milwaukee ratchet,it almost look identical to the sunex.

I've used cheater pipes and hammered on my gearwrench 84 tooth ratchet and its still smooth, at work i have Matco 88 ratchets that i love the design but I've already had to rebuild my 3/8". If you don't have a tool truck dealer to buy USA made tools go gearwrench!

My favorite ratchet is Tekton. I thought the Gear Wrench did really good for how cheap it was. Have you checked out any of the Ingersoll Rand hand tools yet?
I have not tried out any IR tools yet. I like Tekton also and it has performed really well.
Same Tekton wratchet's with GearWrench sockets. Both are solid companies that seem to be going for the old craftsman "high quality tools at an affordable price" market.
I also love how detailed Tekton is with info on their tools. It's really impressive to see a company being transparent about their tools specs and where they are made.
10:24. Huh? The 90 tooth ratchet is nearly identical to the 90 tooth ratchet??
Absolutely nothing can beat Snap-On. Simple as that. But that said, I can't afford Snap-On anymore and I no longer am a professional yacht technician. So now I usually purchase Gear Wrench. They are pretty good and OK for home use. I do not consider them professional quality, they would never hold up to the abuse I used to gove my Snap-On looks, which I still have some 28 years later and they are still perfect and work like new.
Need to add the Matco 88 tooth to your testing. I own 6 and haven't broke one yet.

Those extra teeth can make the difference in a tight spot to get a nut or bolt tightened . If it’s durable I’ll go with the 90T ratchet !

Someone mentioned it in a livestream that Tractor Supply was getting them in so I would expect to seem more trickle in over the rest of the year. The locking flex and compact ones will probably be Amazon or online or distributor/reseller items👌🏻

The best Gearwrench Ratchet ever made is this one 81266 3/8" Dr. 84 Tooth Full Polish Locking Flex Ratchet.
They will be making that in the 90T and it will be part 81266T which will replace the 84t you mentioned m.

I have a few different Gearwrench ratchets in both 1/4" and 3/6" drive, and they're all fine, I have no complaints. But I really don't understand the Gearwrench marketing strategy. As far as I can see, they are still producing and selling ratchets in 72 tooth, 84 tooth, 90 tooth, 100 tooth and 120 tooth specs. Why?! It seems like they need to simplify their range a bit.
If you buy sata ratchet its the same thing as gearwrench but cheaper, I own lots of both brands. I own the 1/2 electric torque wrench from gearwrench and the 3/8ths electric torque wrench from sata they are the same on the inside when it come to the electronics.

The audio was bad on the original intro with too much wind noise. I had to redo the intro at the store that didn’t have the ratchet since it’s closer to me on a different day and it’s amazing how the two fit together fairly decent. I enjoyed the fast speed through the store and audio👌🏻
The whole point of having 2 separate measurement devices is to compare values from independent sources. When you calibrate them together it makes 2 devices pointless. For credibility the tests should be repeated multiple times and averaged to account for manufacturing variances.

I have a good load of Gearwrench and they work great , however some of their tools quality is starting to flop, specifically on the ratchet wrenches. But their ratchets are nice, I found that the 84 tooth seems to do best on a constant basis .

You have quite a lot of tools and use the heck out of them! I might go get me a Teq Pro 60t chrome ratchet to test out and dedicate that video to you!
You dont have to ruin the WERA and Hazet.
Just measure the hardness of the drive.
Also mention the number of teeth and the head diameter.
That way you can also check other premium priced tools, like FACOM, BRITOOL, STAHLWILLE and even the new Chinese BAHCO.
they make some good ratchets but id still prefer the main tool truck brand ratchets (snap on, matco, mac, etc) over GearWrench. Maybe just me but I like a nicer tool.

Man if I manage to put 269 foot pounds of torque on a 3/8” ratchet without a cheater bar I should get a medal or something. I think these will be fine for daily use since if something needs 270 foot pounds of torque it’s either getting a breaker bar or an impact wrench.
Does anyone know if they are made in Taiwan or China?
Do you warranty the ratchets you break? If so do the companies give you any problems? Or just eat the cost since it’s kinda abuse?
Warranty some and toss others. The tool truck brands are the easiest to swap as is Harbor Freight and a few others. The worst experience so far was at Lowe’s

I appreciate your test and your professionalism and everything however this test doesn’t really show what these ratchets can do,,,what you might could do is give those ratchets to some professional mechanics and have them use them for about six months to a year and then come back and talk about to them about the tools performance swing arc slop play things of this nature and slop and this and that have them compare them to other things then when you’re all done you really truly know what you Got there,,, my Dual 80 snap on ratchets run smoother than ole owl 🦉 shi+ and it would take a lot of convincing for someone to hawk some other tool to me to replace them with,,,I’d have to see Moses standing around parting the Red Sea or something along those lines to get me to change my mind on the Dual 80 series
This type of failure analysis is testing the metallurgy of the socket drive moreso than the internal gear and pawl design.
You're not turning at a straight angle. Youre pulling it to one side you see that it tilts, so unnecessary stress on the tools. So makes me wounder what it actual ft lbs it is

Are those tekton numbers from the rachet that had the handle bend instead of the anvil breaking? I thought that was the biggest loser in the original comparison. I have a set of their pry bars that also flex way more than they should.

The 'strength test' is really a dumb test of a ratchet quality. Rachets paws and inner components breakdown after years of constant use. Not using them on bolts done up by Hercules. We have breaker bars for that.

Got the tekton 1/4 and 3/8 chrome sets and have held up at work everyday along with their deep 1/2 impact sockets
Here's my Friday night conspiracy theory, the newly design Gearwrench 90 tooth ratchet gear cover looks just like the gear cover on SATA ratchets. I believe the new Gearwrench 90 tooth ratchets are made in the SATA factory in China, People's republic of and assembled in Taiwan. Gearwrench claims the upgraded 90 tooth ratchets have stronger internals than their 84 tooth series but, your failure test didn't really show that. It's great that Gearwrench continues to upgrade their product, if 6 more teeth can be considered an upgrade but, I think the revised comfort grip handle shape and new color scheme is nice. Thanks for sharing.

Tooth count at this point is largely marketing. It seems now that even tools are adopting the Apple marketing model. I have handled the 120 tooth stuff, and it still has way to much backlash, slop and freeplay, in the action of the tool. I don't care how many times it clicks. My SnapOn dual 80 ratchets have the best swing arc, despite not having the most teeth. I also like my Gearwrench 84 tooth, it feels very similar to the 120 tooth stuff.
