  • One of the most difficult projects for a beginner is broken down pipe by pipe in this episode of #TFSBoostFab. Building aturbo manifold requires a thorough understanding of concept, design, function, and a bit of artistic flair to complete. Justin the Fabricator breaks it all down in an easy to follow process in Part 1 -the Mock-up.

      @@TheFabricatorSeries quick question I'm no fabricator but would it not have been easier to put the two flanges closest to you on the ends left and right and then the two flanges in the front straight onto the second and third part on the head or do all four have to be kind of equal shape etc... It just seemed much easier to do it that way... I'm no fabricator though. Just found your channel subscribed and have watched 4 or 5 videos so far. Excellent CONTENT 👌 and EXCELLENT in depth EXPLAINING!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

    Amazing work as ever. Summit racing used to (may still do) sell a kit that had all plastic elbows that clip together and can be adjusted all sorts of angles and when you have a full mock exhaust shape complete they can be taken apart in sections to use as a direct template to mark cut lines on the metal pipe sections
    Iceengineworks make the plastic kit

    I did most of my fab work in Phoenix, hot as hell, just like Vegas. I welded in short sleeves until I got flash burns on the tops of my biceps. I took a cue from the landscapers and roofers... and started wearing long sleeves. Don't confuse hot, sweaty and uncomfortable with overheated. Get some sleeves on your arms.

    • @Getbent97
      @Getbent97 5 років тому

      I agree with Kevin, burns from welding, is no fun at all and a hell of a lot more uncomfortable than being hot from wearing the correct welding gear.

    You have an awesome channel. There are not a whole lot of people that actually go into as much detail as you do while doing a great job explaining what, when, why, and how. I have a question. Why do you always use stainless steel? Is it for looks, heat or anything? I noticed on alot of things you used stainless. Like exhausts and things also.

    First of all I've been watching your channel for a long time and your videos are the best hands down. They even helped me weld in my own wheel tubs! My question is did you use 304 or 304L?

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  6 років тому +1

      cjsjodin Thanks for watching! My vendor stocks 304L. I've used both in the past with no noticeable difference. One thing I suggest checking out is the pic of the product. Some will state "304" in the description, but show (and ship) 304L in the pic. It makes almost no difference unless you're really picky, but if it makes or breaks your decision, double check the picture of the product. You ultimately just want it to take the heat and not rust while maintaining strength.

    I saw you were counting bends and straight pieces, is there any other measuring you did to get your lengths equal? Or does that not matter as much, as far as being very close to exactly all the same, like within an 1/8th to a 1/4. Just wondering bc that's what makes me the most nervous about making my own and I feel like others might be intimidated by the same, that is if welding isn't an issue for them lol. Thanks for the video.... 1 vid and I'm in. Subscribed.

    Was thinking use Pipe foam lagging (wrap) inside the pipe just to dry fit the sections together so you could get the sizes and angles without having to juggle all the bits in one hand , put some ref markers then can spot weld with foam removed.

    • @ButBigger42
      @ButBigger42 7 років тому +2

      Stainless and Titanium need to have the shielding gas on both sides. If you don't have the shielding gas on both sides you get "sugaring" which is a weak point that will lead to failure of the weld. Basically, you need to prevent oxygen from touching the metal while it's molten and while it cools.
      To back purge a pipe, you cover one hole with something like aluminum foil or tape. You do the same on the other side, but you stick a hose inside. The hose is connected to the shielding gas and gets rid of the oxygen on the inside.
      The tig torch itself flows gas on the front side of the weld.

      Forged Shaft It varies by design but I usually get full mockup in 3-4 hours. This mockup took about 12 or so. I started in the morning and finished at night. The tricky part is getting the camera in the right spot so you can see it the first time because just about everything has to be shot in only one take. The strange part is you (the viewer) often sees more in the vid than I do when making the part which is extremely challenging haha. But I like the challenge.

    • @ForgedShaft
      @ForgedShaft 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply, seems fairly difficult but you make it look so easy, somehow. I was thinking of attempting one with mild steel steam pipe as it would be easier to work with but it would probably take me a month to complete, someday ill give it a crack :)

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  7 років тому

      Forged Shaft The only difference between mild and stainless pipe elbows (aside from price) is coverage. The other big difference is strength. In my opinion, if you're going to build one, might as well build it once with the materials that will perform better which would be stainless.

    Hey Justin. Not gonna lie, I found your channel yesterday with the rebranding a valve cover vid. Your work and your mindset is so clear and easy to follow. plus the green screen voice over concept is killer. I design race and street cars over on my channel and i have been watching non stop since last night, everything you do i can translate into my designs. ive been working on a design of a mitsubishi mirage hatchback with a 4g63 AWD swap. the first video of that should be up in a couple of days. i would love it if you could check out my channel. any feedback and suggestions would be much appreciated! keep up the awesome work. I only wish fabrication and supplies were easy to come by where i live in Malaysia. :(
