  • Ian reviews the new Firewire Helium Too Fish Surfboard available now at Boardshop.
    Available here www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/fi...
Rob Machado and Firewire's new offering, the Too Fish twinny looks like a whole load of fun. Remember the Go Fish? The Too Fish is a great step forward in performance and pure surfing enjoyment.
The Go Fish has been resurrected and improved upon, gone is the "board eat board" concave set up and it now has a super smooth progressive concave through the base. Starting from the nose the board is flat and then runs into a gentle concave which accelerates just where the Machado logo is on the base, it then gets pretty deep and crazy through to the fins. The new shape is about speed and performance with control, and its feels amazing as you run your hand down the board. The vee through the tips of the swallow tail is still there, the whole concept here is about moving water smoothly under the board creating a better ride. The fin positioning is pushed out to compliment the concave set up allowing the board to flow from rail to rail more easily.
No doubt Machado will be seen ripping on this board, going vertical etc but for the mere mortal surfer it's a fast, smooth surfing board that will beat those problem sections and on the rail will fly through turns. The plan shape makes wave catching pretty straight forward, all that surface area up front and under your chest will generate paddle speed right from the off.
Machado has also designed bespoke fins to work with this board with Slater's Endorfin brand. The fins are built using bamboo and then laminated with resin made from recycled plastic all encasing an ultra light foam core. Ingeniously the fin is called the "Too Fish Keel" and is Machado's fastest, lightest and most performance driven twin fin to date. He describes the fins as "loose, lively and drivey for all round flow" sounds ideal for the Too Fish!
Firewire's Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, seems strong, no signs of any pressure marks at all, and very fast. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay.

    Nice
Looks a lot like the christenson fish (for both shape and single concave)
    Doesn’t it?

Loving that thin tail and generous dims! To me that thin tail makes so much sense on a board designed for speed. Still super wide, like the seaside, so it'll be curious to see how it goes in comparison. I loved my seaside, but to me, it didn't quite have the volume to height ratio to be a dedicated groveler, worked as a fantastic all arounder though. Happy he didn't make the 5'7 30 L like the Go Fish, thing was way too thin for us civilian, mortal, try to grow out our hair and be like Rob but are bald folk.

More flow to it than the seaside. Same paddle power, wave catch ability, and speed. To put it as simply as I can, it’s a more playful seaside that still has great hold and control through turns. Size it the same as you would the seaside and enjoy 😎

Well its about time , shame its not got the board eat board channel still as that adds bite in punchier conditions but the swallow is deeper so should do the same, at least its in the helium as well so should last unlike the LFT which was more fragile.

surfed next to someone riding the "too fish" in pretty unforgiving beachbreak conditions and she did really well, so now i'm curious :) just don't know how big i can go and still be comfortable with quick and fast late takeoffs

What would you say the difference between too fish and seaside in terms of performance?

    • @BoardshopUK
      @BoardshopUK  Рік тому +3

      Performance advantages
      • It is extremely fast and is very trustworthy in steep surf. It likes the pocket a lot more and has much more bite in it than a Seaside. Works great at your true shortboard liters, largely due the wider tail. It also paddles a little better than the Seaside.
      • In sizing up (2-4L above your ‘normal’), it may be the best board in our offering. The sweet spot is bigger and less critical, you can surf forward on it easily, it generates great speed down the line, but with great control and the rail still engages well. It was found to be more trustworthy in steeper sections that the Seaside and is an ideal board (rivaling/ even beating out the Sweet Potato, SUN and SAB) for a board with glide that has more performance.
      In comparison to
      • Go Fish - It’s a lot quicker in the pocket compared to the Go Fish. Doesn’t hold a rail quite as well as the Go Fish, but definitely much more maneuverable in the pocket.
      • Seaside - Rides VERY different to the Seaside. The rails bury into the water further and allow a tighter turn. It’s also easier to change direction back to the open face after a little down carve or cut back. The Too Fish pivots more like a shortboard. The seaside pivots more like an 80’s shortboard. A little more above the water and you need to wash the speed a bit for it to roll to the rail. Especially in the pocket.
      Tips
      • The sweet spot is very small (more so on smaller sizes) and you need to be as far back as possible over the fins or else it won’t perform to its maximum abilities. If you’re too far forward it will still be fast and skatey, but it’ll just wash out or not come around when trying to put it on rail. That being said, if you’re in the sweet spot, it holds unreal.
      • A beginner to intermediate surfer could probably buy it a bit bigger to make the sweet spot a little bigger.

yeah, I have a 5'9 seaside and find that it feels like pushing water when paddling for waves, almost like there's too much volume up at the front... @@BoardshopUK

    Shame there's such a gap between the 5'11 and 6'1. 6'0 @ 40 litres would be great.
