  • I have uploaded a 'remastered' version of this video here... • Marlboro Clubmans Silv...
This was screened on prime time BBC 1 TV sports programme, Grandstand, at 1pm the following Saturday, with commentary by the one and only Murray Walker. The Des Lynam comment after the race is a classic :-)
This was another no-holds barred 350 proddy race from the mid-80s. Dean Askin had already won the title, but the last race at Silverstone was always the one every rider wanted to win. Did Kevin Mawdsley see the last lap flag? Did anybody?

The number of starters back then compared to now is fantastic. Shows the entries you can get in an affordable class of racing.
I raced in SS400 in Northern Ireland back in the 90s and the grids were so full, they had to run 2 or 3 qualifying heats.
Bring back an affordable class again and get more into racing.

I was in that race, the guy who crashed in the middle of the track did that in front of me, had to dodge bike and rider.

Having lived through the 60s, 70s,80s. Why is video footage from those days look old and faded? I remember those times in HI-DEF.🤔

It wasn't high definition back then. The TVs were CRT (cathode-ray tube) which produced better quality visuals that only the TVs of the last few years have bettered. Plus it was recorded on VHS tapes which have degraded over the years.
If you did a direct comparison of the video quality between the current BBC TV HD (2k - 2,160p) and video in the pre HD days on a CRT TV, you would see the difference. Plus the max size CRT TV you could get was 39".
I have uploaded a slightly better quality version here... ua-cam.com/video/KNSBxbMqRoA/v-deo.html but the resolution is slightly lower so the video size is smaller.

Rymers bike was a bit more powerful and the full fairing of the F model YPVS 350 helped.

That's the best race Terry ever had and I was there to see it, set him on his career to Locktite etc. I knew him very well and on his day he was quicker than Fogarty. But Foggy won a lot of titles Terry didn't, Where did the difference come from?

Boy who won the 350 title, never heard of the lad. Mawdsley made British Championship level & Rymer made the next level.
      That's your answer.

@@ewennicolson4342 sorry Ewen, I don't see what your answer is? Terry won the BSB in 1990 with Loctite Yamaha and was then promoted to the WSB with them. After a few years he went private on a Kawasaki in WSB and I remember he shared a pit in Albacete with Fogarty who had just got a customer Ducati. Terry never progressed much from there and Foggy did. That's what I remember, and like I said, I was there with him.

It’s funny I had an RZ500 I think late 90s plenty of power but handled like shit, but then the likes of Michael Dawson won the 6 hour on one, I no they road the aluminium frame version so the bike was a tad lighter. My RD250LC handled better

not even a fair contest one frider on the F2

    • @2wheelsonline

Rymer on the F2 is a bit like Bautista in WSBK on the Ducati. They are all moaning about how light he is but it's the aerodynamics as well & he can took in really well being so small.
Rymer's bike was a bit faster than mine but the full fairing & Terry being able to took in well was the main advantage. 😭
I had beaten him at Malllory Park two weeks earlier in the penultimate Marlboro round.
