- A seaplane departs for China.
On board are a nurse escaping a loveless marriage to do work with refugees, a woman hoping to surprise her estranged son, a wealthy heiress trying to distance herself from labor troubles, an oily politician, a moll and a mobster fleeing the wrath of the gangs they've double-crossed, two rival munitions salesmen out to cash in on the misery of war, and a fresh-faced young steward. Are caught in a course-altering storm, a crash-landing destroys the plane, kills the plane's officers, and tosses the surviving passengers into the sea. They are washed ashore on an isolated island inhabited solely by mysteriously reclusive Mr. Taylor and his servant, Ping. Until Taylor decides if, how and when he will allow them to take his boat back to China for help, this disparate band must work together, change their self-centered ways, and examine their motives for wanting to escape from the island and their pasts.

Haven't seen this before and it wasn't too bad. Did remind me of Gilligan's Island though. Well worth watching again. Thanks for posting it. Joe S

Realtively short adventure / romance flick. Lots of action, character studies and very good acting. the director did a whale of a job. Mucho entertaining. Some say it went by too fast. I could have stood another half hour easy. TY CCC. Great chat gang. 3.5 ⭐s. 🤩
I think this is one of the films they limited to around an hour so the drive-ins could run double features (both features were distributed as a package).
Forget logic and just enjoy the movie! Amazing storm graphics BTW, esp for 1938.

Interesting how as the plane is taking off people are still walking around in the cabin.
Entertainment, plain ole black and white fun. The sea plane was as big as a luxury train on the inside, must have had a nice bathtub, they all changed for dinner!

I kept waiting for a polar bear to show up, followed by a smoke monster.
They just bust in on this man throwing coconuts and demanding resources off this man like a bunch of pirates.
At 11:40 the navagator gives an erronious position. He says west instead of east. The position he radio'd was between Hawaii and the US mainland...not 700 miles north of Guam. Someone who knew a little bit wrote or edited the script, very plausable. Still, the searchers would know the clipper had flown west from Hawaii and the position must have switched east and west. Eight years after the movie was made hundreds of B29 bombers would pass this point, half way to their bombing mission over Tokyo. These movies are more interesting if you know the history, the context.

In the first couple of minutes I made three observations,1 Everyone is on speed ( fast talking),2 Hats are in and 3, Majority of actors are dead. If the WW2 didn't get them, old age would have.

At 11:43, their "approximate position is "N 22, W 143." That position is about 300 miles due EAST of Honolulu. So what are they doing, flying in circles or back to the mainland?
This has some similarities to the movie stage coach, or I should say stage coach was similar to this since it came out a year later.

This is a great movie I would love to have a set up like that on an island. I wouldn't leave either. I live on a boat and I'm surrounded by Islands but boat people not welcome to set foot on land, unless they find a place to come ashore and have written permission from a landowner. We have to sneak around to get to shore, and be haunted by police and millionaires. I got mine and not in my backyard kind of people. I worked my ass off on this Island Building swimming pools and homes and putting up fences for a bunch of ungrateful millionaire scum. And they all wish they could live like me, but they just can't get used to the hard work that it is. Living on a boat is anything but free.
This movie is almost pre code in places.

That servant laughts to much, but the owner is right. These entitled jerks need to do some work for once. America is full of these types of crooks even in 1938. No doubt going back to the beginning.
