Often families are all living in one room together, with no cooking facilities, waiting to hear from the council about whether they will be placed in more permanent accommodation, or told to pack up and move hotels with a day’s notice. The Guardian spoke with three families living in the hotel about the impact it’s having on their children, health and money.

I feel like the government has allowed this to happen. Not building enough affordable homes, not giving councils the funding they need to help situations like this, this country is such a state! People deserve so much better!

Perhaps the government has allowed this to happen. Has the government provided primary and high school education to all for free? Has the government provided vocational training for basic jobs? Has the government encouraged young people to be responsible for themselves? Do they council those on benefits how to better their lives on their own? How to manage money, how to control the size of their family? Since the government is responsible for the situation these people are in, perhaps the government should take the pacifier away and provide them the challenge to support themselves.

This makes me so angry. The people's situations in this video broke my heart - this is NOT OK. I've been one of the hidden homeless, mainly due to aging out of social care and not being adequately rehoused and/ or cared for and having to find my own way. The system is flawed. How can we as a society allow so many so slip through the cracks? Because the government certainly doesn't care. Its up to us!

He's actually very lucky to be in a hotel room with accessibility. I was told 7 years ago by shelter that the local authority is under no legal obligation to take my disability (& lack of mobility too) into account when placing us in temporary accommodation. And if that meant a bathroom on a different floor which I couldn't access then there was nothing I could do about it and I should just be grateful for the roof over my head because in other areas some people didn't even get that. No offer of hotels then!

I had to pay 2 random nights for a friend while his housing was being repaired because his Council did this. I got the money back.
Councils do this because they are trying to encourage people to go and stay with family and friends to save money.
My friend has social care and needs a bed due to his disabilities so couldn't move out of the local area. The only space friends like me have our are sofas or floors, plus we live in different parts of London. Added to this lots of us who are still young enough to work now work from home. His family who have space in their homes live abroad but he's lived in the UK for over 45 years.
Anyway once they tried it twice they stopped doing this as someone realised that he wasn't moving from the hotel. It took 9 weeks to do his repair because of having to tick boxes. As someone who owns their own property I know the repair should have taken a maximum of 2 weeks and I'm being generous.

I became homeless while I was 5 months pregnant. I approached Waltham Forest council because I lived with my mom in a shelter and was asked to move out because I can’t have a baby in a sheltered accommodation. The council refused to help me even after housing association gave me a final notice via letter. I was sneaking in to sleep in my moms property till I had a baby and I couldn’t go back. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks because I didn’t have anywhere to go. I had to consult a lawyer who then contacted the council and they finally lodged me and me 2 weeks baby to a travel lodge hotel. We were there for three days and they moved us into a hostel where we stayed there for 5 months on a loft with my caesarean section. This was the hardest days of my life. After 5 months they gave us a one bedroom apartment in the private sector. We are happy now and grateful. I’ve already started bidding looking forward to move. In all we give God the glory. He’s been faithful❤️

Who said anyone cannot be discharged without a home? These days you barely get to catch your breath before you're discharged, never mind anyone caring where you go! Back in the 80’s, I had friends who actually planned to have kids in order to secure a council property. They knew that by having kids it would get them to the top of the housing list. They actually admitted to this! I think so many people started to do this because there was no affordable option open to them.
It hasn’t fared too well for them in the long run though as they are stuck in grotty, dismal areas with no hope for themselves and their kids. Just a sad, hopeless existence at the mercy of the government. Their children then grow up to repeat the doom cycle. It’s very sad 😞

It’s like it’s going backwards rather than forwards. Before the social housing system, the only options poorer people had, were workhouses/poorhouses. This was the only form welfare state😭 children were separated from their mothers and parents were separated from each other and sent off to work independently - long 10 hour days 6 days a week. Dreadful!
What are you meant to do if you work full time but still can’t afford to live?! Current times are very worrying and so sad that people can’t afford to start families and give their children a good quality life.

The main reason UK landlords don' t accept tenants on Benefits is that the rules were changed from having Housing Benefit paid directly to landlords from the Social Security offices to paying the money to the tenants. There were instances of landlords not being paid by the tenants , who very often used the money to fund luxuries they couldn' t afford. So landlords naturally are nervous about Benefits tenants. Eventually, after more expense they could evict them, but there is no legal recourse for the landlord or the government to get the money back from Benefits tenants.

The biggest problem is that there is no such thing as affordable housing, the prices of flats, apartments and houses is ridiculous, especially down south, rent is also extremely high, the average rent for a one bedroom flat down south is over one thousand pounds a month, also the more people you let into the country who need housing the less social housing there will be, this is why hotels like these Travelodge’s are now being used. We have created a system where people are better off not working because those who work in average paid to low paid jobs (all of which are essential jobs, shop workers, carers, nurses etc) get no benefits and struggle to afford to live.

The Council often only have temporary places and temporary hotel rooms while they try to get a place for people and a child doesn't want or need to be pushed from pillar to post when trying to make friends, get schooling and sometimes be far from family support. Moving the small bits of stuff you own every time is difficult and more expense. Children come with things they need for daily living.
I worked with a woman who could no longer pay the rent as it went up hugely but wages were literally up pence extra per hour. She went to a temp house that was damp then one with water coming through the ceiling. It was quite a while before somewhere was found. This was going on since the 60's so no change. Too many women have babies with unfit men knowing that if they don't support us, the council will ensure there is a roof over our heads (even if it's just a hotel). The number of times I've seen women I know have babies with men they hardly know (and who are clearly not financially responsible) but they will say, its OK, the council have to house me. Landlords will all have to face GOD one day.

They're moved from place to place, away from work and schools and they are in a very small room with children, no cooking facilities and in some cases not even a cooked breakfast as there are no kitchens, not are they allowed to have their own cooking units ie toaster, microwave etc, so the money they have is spent on take away, eating out, which is unsustainable and extortionate. A lot of them must go hungry. Also quite often they are not rebooked for an extended stay until they day they're supposed to check out and it may be elsewhere, calls are not answered etc. It's definitely a help, but also mentally, physically and financially draining for these poor families. Also can you imagine the costs for the council!!

If the landlord can’t afford the mortgage on the property it either gets sold or rent increased, if the tenants decide to pay the new rent rate, it proves that there is a market for that property at that price. The number one thing effecting rental prices is demand vastly outstripping supply caused by unprecedented immigration to the uk in the past 20 years.

So yeah, neither companies nor landlords are entitled to raise their rent 300% from one year to the next, nor charge absurd amounts for properties which causes artificial inflation. If people can't self-regulate then it's time the government steps in and starts regulating prices because it is dumb to pay astronomical prices for things just to make those owenrs richer.

There are huge challenges, which are directly the fault of this vile Tory government. We need to be on a war footing to deal with this issue. I'm sure that if the necessary will and impetus was put behind it, we could build a lot of social housing and much quicker than 10 years.

For all the comments questioning the whereabouts of the fathers of the children. Consider that some women and children may be living in hotels, due to domestic violence.
The lack of housing means no available houses for families to leave a refuge, so they continue to live in refuges, until a home becomes available. But the lack of refuge spaces can mean that desperate vulnerable families are forced to live in hotels. It's a sad situation all around.

I’m grateful we were in the hotel, as opposed to being on the street but also it’s difficult. After countless rejections (looking privately) & no responses or idea how long I’d be there for speaking seemed like the only thing that could help. Thankfully when I got assigned a case worker, she was amazing & helped me look privately. After many failed attempts, I got somewhere (private rented). Bigger change needs to happen.
