I think one thing that really proves your point is New Pokemon Snap. A sequel to Pokemon Snap was hyped up for years, for so long, and when it finally came out, it was only talked about for like a week and only amassed around 2 million sales. Really shows that the audience for these spinoffs is way smaller than most people realize.
Two problems here with this system despite having a good argument behind it. 1. Namco Bandai makes a lot more games nowadays than they used to, so even if they wanted to add more content for New Pokémon Snap, they actually might not be able to due to things like time restraints or that stupid pandemic everyone’s been talking about. 2. Spin-off games that have sold less than the original Pokémon Snap on the Nintendo 64 did have gotten plenty of successor games before. Some examples include Gates to Infinity (1.38 million) not being the only Mystery Dungeon game on the 3DS, every installment of Pokémon Rumble to date (Blast is the only one that sold over 1 million), and PokéPark Wii (less than 1.5 million) getting a sequel before Creatures Inc. shifted their focus to the insane development cycle of Detective Pikachu, to say nothing of their job with 3D Pokémon models.
I think what hurt New Pokémon Snap was that it lacked the charm, characters and personality of the original game. Todd Snap was hyped up a lot in the anime as a way to cross promote the game. Also, Professor Oak was featured prominently. NPS by comparison gives you random uninspired photographer and random uninspired professor of a random uninspired region. I didn't even know that (an older) Todd Snap was in the new game until I looked up a Bulbapedia article on him. I think more people would have bought NPS if they made Todd the playable character and brought Professor Oak back.
The reason we probably dont have a Conquest 2 is likely due to legal reasons: Pokemon Conquest is a crossover between Pokemon and Nobunaga’s Ambition/Samurai Warriors, and Gamefreak would need to ask Koei if it is okay to use their characters again. This is made harder because Conquest apparently didn’t sell well both because SRPGs are not really casual friendly and that Conquest was released at the end of the DS’s lifespan, so I think both GF and Koei are a bit scared of making another potential flop. Either way, I do want to see another Pokemon SRPG, Koei or not.
@@grassfish01 Excellent explanation of the situation. Couldn’t have done this better myself, and as far as legal reasons goes, that does play a part in what games can be re-released on Virtual Console and/or Nintendo Switch online. Case in point, when all those spin-offs hit the Wii U eShop in 2016, Pokémon Conquest was actually absent from that list, likely due to the reasons you stated above.
It's a shame that they stopped the mystery dungeon game on the 6th gen, because I would have love to see an story on that world that presented the more weird pokemon that came in later gens like the ultra beast or more recently the paradox pokemon. How would they have fit in the stories? Would they have been antagonist? Allies? Or a little story exclusive to the post game?
I always thought the same. Unfortunately I doubt they’d give it a chance. The most I see them doing is possibly a time/darkness remake but even then I’m not sure about. Hope I’m wrong though.
@@skittlemilks1614 I'm hoping a remake of sky would become a reality, provided it has everything we like about the original, but better, like less limited storage.
That’s just false lol, didn’t Mystery Dungeon DX prove this? Every single Mystery Dungeon after Sky gets increasingly worse. Pokemon overall has proven that the “soul” in 2d sprites vs 3d models is no comparison, and that translated to most of the spinoffs.
@@blur8163 I'm sorry. But what's wrong with Mystery Dungeon DX? Sure, it's got some weird changes like the removal of the neutral attack and the 8 team members, but other than that, I'd say it's still a great game.
It’s criminal how few fans have played Gale of Darkness and Colosseum. I’m currently working on my ribbon master Scizor (in gen 7 at the moment) and for ribbon masters alone I could never call the GameCube games obsolete
GameCube games have had a rocky history within Nintendo’s lineup. They could be played on most models of the original Wii console, sure, but they couldn’t have been played on the Wii U even if Nintendo wanted that to happen due to a very complicated issue involving backwards compatibility with the original Wii console. It took until Super Mario 3D All Stars for Nintendo to have a solution to this, and even then we likely won’t get GameCube games on the Switch proper for a little while longer. P.S. best of luck with the Scizor 😁
@@zoruasnivy XD and Colosseum weren't on the Wii eshop. It wasn't until the 3DS/WiiU that Nintendo started having retail games available through the eshop For the Wii and DSi, it was only WiiWare, DSiWare and Virtual Console games up on Nintendo's eshops By the time the eshop was offering full retail games, XD and Colosseum weren't being sold by Nintendo any more
On the point of people “wisening up,” I disagree. Gen 5 also was when Pokémon as a whole reached a low point sales wise. So naturally, the spin offs were hurt too, if not even more. In general, gen 5 was a big turning point for the franchise where the whole “mobile games are better” outlook started for TPC. So yeah, I’d say the burnout in gen 5 is why the shift happened, not people getting smarter.
@@piranhalettuce Ffs, there's a myriad of reasons to hate Gen 5. I'm very tired of people acting like we rejected Jesus Christ and are condemned because of it.
@@piranhalettuce yeah I find that to be such a strange complaint about the games. Like ik the art direction the games went with isn’t for everyone but just being 3d doesn’t magically make a game look good or be more enjoyable(as people have seemingly realized).
@@hephsforge9236 Gen 5 definitely was a let down the moment the games came out for the ds just before the 3ds released not even 6 months later. And the only reason Gen 5 is praised nowadays is a combination of the games after them being even worse and the generation that played them as kids grew up and shifted the narrative. There's no overlooked secret gem.
@saturos53 I grew up with OG Gen 1 Red and Blue on Game Boy. I have played every generation of Pokémon. I definitely didn't grow up with Gen 5, and yet it's my second favorite Gen after Gen 3. It absolutely is an overlooked secret gem so... I guess You rejected Jesus Christ and are condemned because of it. 🤷♂️
It’s breaks my heart that studios like chunsoft and genius sonority have changed so much with the type of Pokémon content they’re making if any. Some of it’s definitely nostalgia but their games just felt like they cared about the player
Lumping Colosseum and XD in with the Stadiums and Battle Revolution always felt weird to me, since while the "bring your mainline game pokemon to battle in 3D on your TV" was the main advertising point, the thing that most people remember from those games and want to see brought back are their fairly extensive story modes, which explored very different ideas than the core series while also ramping up the difficulty and requiring more strategic play. It bridged the gap between "casual players who want a fun single player adventure" and "serious competitive players who want a complex strategy game" in a way that nothing else in the franchise ever really has.
@@finnanima2413 I know a lot of people look down on self promotion, but if you’re into PMD fan fictions, I’ve been working on one of my own for a few years now. Would you be interested?
The originals and Explorers were so good. I'm sad that they ended up trying to push the series in different directions that never quite worked. Even Mystery Dungeon DX just didn't feel the same.
It's also C) Videogames take more and more money time and workers to make than ever leading to it just not being worth the opportunity costs. Which is probably a big factor here too
@@pokepress I feel like MarioKart has become it's own thing. It is a spinoff but it's so iconic that it's become too big to consider a regular spinoff. I mean the Mario series has often had offshoots that became their own worlds with lore and stuff. Like Donkey Kong Country series and the WarioLand and WarioWare series.
@@colmecolwag this is a fake narrative, games make more money than they ever have, especially digital sales, also some of the biggest games are made by a small team of 10 or fewer people.
Longtime Pokémon Ranger fan here. I can imagine a few reasons we haven’t gotten a new one since 2010, surprisingly none of which are related to “Oh GuArDiAn SiGnS dIdN’t SeLl WeLl” -Making a fourth removes the whole concept of a “trilogy” existing -All three Ranger games have some connection to Generation 4, which would have ended by the time a fourth game came out -The company that produced this series (Creatures Inc.) had A LOT on their plates during pretty much all of the 2010s, with both PokéPark games and every 3D main series game requiring their efforts, as well as Detective Pikachu (which also sold less than Guardian Signs but had a sequel announced anyway) When the time and hardware is right, I could very likely see this game getting the New Pokémon Snap treatment, title not withstanding.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon played a big part in my love of storytelling. I’d love to see it come back, even if it’s just another port. Imagine Fogbound Lake in the DX art style! Conquest got me into turn based battlefield strategy games, and I still love going back to play it every now and then. I’d about kill to see another entry. Ranger is just awesome. I don’t know how they’d pull it off given the touch screen being less of a thing on the Switch, but I’d also like to see it back.
I miss PokePark. I can understand that Creatures is likely busier with the core games now and even if they weren't they'd just be making mobile games because that's what profitable right now, but something about exploring these grandiose locations as a Pikachu or a Unova starter, performing small tasks to befriend other Pokemon, and taking part in fun minigames just... feels like the more grandiose yet still chill experience I miss. And, aside from Creatures being busy on core games (which I HAVE asked for those to slow down because at this point I just find them overwhelming and not in the good way) and the mobile gaming trend (even if I do enjoy Pokemon Masters), I see no reason those games couldn't have moved on from the Wii. Sure the Wii U was too big of a risk, but I for one wouldn't mind spending a little extra time on one generation if it means it lets that gen have a more varied catalogue of games I can all enjoy... like gen 2-5 (and to a lesser extent 6) had. Like any other Pokemon spinoff fans, I do want to see another grandiose title like the Colosseum duology, AND another entry in the epic Mystery Dungeon series (though I'd personally still really love remakes of Explorers and Gates; the former's always fun to revisit and the latter has tons of potential but the og has flaws that make it just slightly too shy of truly showcasing them), but if I had to choose one more, I'd go with PokePark.
i’m praying for a pokepark 3. pokepark 2 is in my top favorite games of all time because of how much it solidified my love for pokémon. i fell in love with the series and the pokémon that have been made since and would love to have a similar experience with the newer pokémon
Colosseum and XD were great games. I wish they would make spin-offs like those again. Hell, give us HD remakes of them at this point. The positive reception to Legends Arceus will hopefully show there is a want for non-traditional games. I loved the Ranger games. They were very different and was an interesting take on the series. But man, my poor DS Lite’s touchscreen.
@@milkdrinker7 they aren't, they should be based on the quality of them, but they aren't. Also i just want an option to make all trainer battles double battles because it adds an actual layer of strategy because singles against AI isn't particularly strategic.
To be fair, considering how greedy the main series is, it's not surprising Pokémon spin-offs went the route of mobile, the most greedy platform. Greedy companies milking the ultimate greedy IP.
Agreed. The cracks in the current model of one main series game after another are really starting to show. Spinoffs give them time work out the bugs & create the best user experience possible.
Ranger gaurdian signs was my first ever Pokémon game,it's sad that some people will never grow up with the ranger series Conquest and mystery dungeon are also really good games,I adore the spin-offs more then the main series sometimes
Guardian Signs was awesome, I remember doing some of the multiplayer missions and failing badly but being fascinated by this small little niche multiplayer mode. I also would look for secret signs online
@@zoruasnivy You just reminded me of the time I was doing multiplayer with my best friend and we got stomped on by a Feraligator so hard we had to watch My Neighbor Totoro to recover. We never did beat that level. Good times.
I genuinely think a new Colosseum/XD Gale of Darkness could work out. They could even do something to get a new mythical Pokémon in SV, like they did for Jirachi in the GBA games with Colosseum.
You forgot an important detail: in 2015, Nintendo SPD merged into EAD. The software planning & development division of Nintendo was responsible for co-developing at least most of the spin-off titles of Nintendo IPs. This is apparently another thing that left with Iwata, as the CEO that replaced him did this immediately.
I remember playing Pokémon Mystery dungeon on the DS as a child. Those games were so dope man. Especially when I ended up getting my hands on an Action Replay. Spawning in with Primal form Dialga on the first mission. Good time good times.
As long of a shot as it is, I would do anything for a new Colosseum/ Battle Revolution-styled game. It would help give Pokémon that still haven't shown up in any titles past USUM (because as much as I hate to admit it, Game Freak seems to be adamant about no longer having every Pokémon/ move/ etc. in their mainline games starting with SWSH) some usability instead of being relegated to Pokémon Purgatory- er, HOME.
That is a really stupid thing. A PBR style game would have more difficulty featuring all Pokemon as in those games, Pokemon would have 15 animations instead of 3. And if they do make the effort to give all Pokemon 15 animations, this effort is better spent for a mainline game, not a battle simulator. Also, PBR heavily relied in the existence of Colo/XD, which relied on the existence of Stadium 2, which relied on the existence of Stadium 1. So a game like that would be unrealistic. Also, PBR got a terrible reception, rightfully, so a successor is off the table. And competitive multiplayer is the only area where Dexit is a double-edged sword instead of a pure negative, so I fail to see why there should be a separate game to alleviate Dexit on that specific area.
@@grrgrrgrr0202 The problem with the battle simulator games is that animations were too long, which was fine for a battle simulator, but awful for an RPG. I wouldn't want the main RPGs to have those kinds of animations. But, if they got another studio to make a Pokemon Stadium style game that can connect to the Switch games and Pokemon Bank, and allows for all 1008 Pokemon to use, I think there'd be a market for that. They won't be making a full game, so they'd have more time to animate all the Pokemon. If they need to, they can even re-use the animations for the older Pokemon. Just update the models. And instead of releasing sequels after every generation, they can just keep updating that game. They can be paid DLC, and come with some new features and modes along with allowing for the new Pokemon. I think it'd honestly make money.
I absolutely loved Pokemon Puzzle League. I would love to see an updated version of that game. Especially since it lacked type advantages in the original. The gameplay could have tweaks to make it even more well-rounded.
Even if we don't get a new title in the Mystery Dungeon series, I'm still holding out hope for an Explorers DX announcement in February. If not this year then at least next year. It's got to happen at some point.
I agree, provided it brings everything we like about it back, and then some, like better storage, do you have any idea how easy it is to max out your storage.
I think there is a place for the 3D battlers ESPECIALLY with how Gamefreak wants to dial back the size of the Dex in future games. The 3D battlers could act as a central repository focused game that has all the models and attack animations. This would allow people to keep favorite Pokémon from previous generations and still use them in battles.
What makes Arceus a spin off and not a main line game is they changed the battle system. For some reason spin offs can’t use the main line battle system.
I initially thought Legends Arceus was a spinoff because it had a different branding to the core series. But then again I didn’t know the real definition of “spinoff” until just a few minutes ago
One thing I always love about ur videos is that u tend to talk about very niche things about Pokémon I wouldn’t expect anyone else to know about so I always appreciate, keep up the good work brodie….also u owe me that smash bros match
I really enjoy Pokémon Masters and Pokémon Cafe Remix a lot. As someone who has played since the first generation, Pokémon Masters is like a love letter to all of the stories and characters that have existed in the main series. And although it might be an acquired taste, I think Pokémon Cafe Remix is a very fun puzzle game. I do miss a lot of the older spin-offs, but I’m still happy we got a couple of gems on mobile so far.
Great video Given the whole drawing circles of Pokémon Ranger I've been curious why it's never got a mobile game version since can do it easily on touch screen I've never been a huge fan of it and only played a little on a borrowed copy but think it could fit in today's mobile game scene
Makes me sad that most likely we won’t get a Pokken Tournament 2. The first game was fun for me as a fighting game/Pokémon fan and I would’ve loved to see what a sequel could do. But one can dream I guess.
After finally finishing mystery dungeon DX I think I found myself really enjoying the series! So I’m currently playing Super Mystery dungeon and I’m loving it, I was very shocked that there were only 4 mystery dungeon games, not including alternate versions or remakes! I’m probably gonna play the rest of them so I’m hoping they make more mystery dungeon games!
I'd recommend you to play Explorers of Sky right away after Super Mystery! You are reaaally for a ride of emotions on that one. In my opinion, the best one we currently have.
Yeah my plan was after I finished super, I’ll do gates and then end off with Sky. So I’m basically going backwards lol. I’m probably not gonna do red and blue since I’m assuming it’s gonna be very similar to DX.
Yes that's correct, the DX is just a remake with 3d model so you're missing anything from the original blue and red version (only if you wanna play for nostalgia of old graphics of course). I wish I had a 3DS to play Gates or Super. I wish you tons of lucks with those man!
Technically, we had 5 Mystery Dungeon games (not counting remakes/versions), but that 5th one was a Japan only Wii game with three! different versions and not much story to them.
I played through the first Ranger game and enjoyed it, I bought Shadows of Almia and never did play it. Just sat on my shelf and now lies in storage somewhere. I regret never playing it.
Pokemon Duel is my favorite Pokemon spinoff of all time. The battle system was very in-depth and fun, and the characters in the story mode were quite likeable and interesting.
Honestly, I’d kinda be okay with seeing some more mobile spinoffs if they really use the appeal of mobile like Go, Duel, and Masters did. I really think new puzzle, pinball, rhythm, or even a pet sim.
I really want another Pokemon Conquest. It’s my personal favorite spin off. I feel like it just came out at such an unfortunate time being released on the DS after the 3DS was already out and during a time that strategy RPGs weren’t popular in the west. I feel like if they gave it another chance it could do a lot better now. Also I tried Pokémon Duel just to see it before it went down and it was actually pretty fun.
@@MustacheDLuffy It was going to be made, but Pokemon Conquest was far in development at the time. That’s how we ended up with Tokyo Mirage Sessions, SMT was their second pick on who to collaborate with since they couldn’t with Pokémon at the time. If they expressed interest in it again maybe it could happen.
Pokemon spin offs are what made Pokemon feel fresh and filled in the gaps between mainline games. By now it's apparent the mainline games need more development time, and I know quality spin offs will help justify more development time
Poke-Park was really good on a world building level and giving individual Mons character. I think this impactis severely underestimated and the new 3D Pokemon Main Series Games would profit greatly by looking at Poke-Park and using some of these design ideas.
God those games were spectacular. Like, they were great. I LOVED them. I'd like a new one on Switch. PokéPark 3 is something that should happen one day. Imo would've worked well on the Wii U for Gen 6 Pokémon since the first had a Gen 4 focus while the sequel had a Gen 5 focus as those were the main series games out at the time of their release.
Oh also people seem to get confused and upset at "Core" and "Main". "Core" is, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow + Gold, Silver, Crystal + Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald + Diamond, Pearl, Platinum + Black, White, Black 2, White 2 + X, Y + Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon + Sword, Shield + Scarlet, Violet. Chill now, no one can touch the core, we know what core is. Main is a larger group and it includes all sorts of things like Arceus, Let's Go, etc (I cbb listing them all out). Arguments come up when people 'think' Lets go, Arceus, etc, are core - they aren't core they have unique mechanics right? But they're still 'Mainline'. I hope this helps someone on the internet, let's chill alright?
I think you have the mystery dungeon relationship a bit backwards. I believe the Pokémon company actually approached Chunsoft with the idea. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that a lot of the early spinoffs have some sort of connection with HAL Laboratories, which has a very experimental history with its Kirby franchise.
Pokemon duel... that brings me back. I LOVED that game to death before it shut down. Heck, it was one of the main factors that made me love tactical strategy. Sad that most didn't get to play that gem of a game.
I actually downloaded duell over apk and I got incredibly sad when I wanted to pick it up again and saw that it shut down. Honestly it was an interesting game and even as a free to play you had alot of chances to gain IG currency from what I remember. :/
I still think a digital downlosd Colosseum XD release on switch with Home support is a very very easy way for them to print money with tiny amount of effort.
At this point in Pokemon, why isn't there just a Pokemon Stadium MODE in pokemon games? You know, just pull off the joy con's and couch co-op battle each other with pokemon I have on my story file?
I want to finally hear more about detective pikachu 2! We did hear about it last year so I'm hoping we can finally see news this pokemon day! I hope one day spin offs return somewhat to what they were.
According to the leak community, we are actually supposed to be getting information on it during 2023. Whether or not the leak community can be trusted is up for debate, but what I do know is that now that both 2022 main series games are released, Creatures Inc. (the developers of Detective Pikachu as well as of all existing 3D Pokémon models) can have more time to work on the sequel that was likely already delayed due to both the pandemic and the lack of a Switch Pro to work with, instead being restricted to the OLED model for hardware enhancements.
Pokemon Rumble, a game where your 'mons just blast wave after wave of enemy 'mons- wasn't a rousing success. And this is clearly a grave mistake on the part of society as a whole.
I personally want new Pokemon Spin offs. New stuff the series hasn't done yet, or much of. Like when Pokken Tournament came out. It felt like a very different spin off. By the way, Pokken Tournament is a game that i think came out at a wrong time.
Pokemon Duel was a victim of EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 gacha style monetization being so horrendously greedy that the whole video game industry's response was to declare all gacha bad. It lost its main revenue source AND a core gameplay loop, I was there near the start, retired, then came back to see the gutted husk
it's called Lootboxes not gacha, all you weirdo weebs have started to call it 'gacha' havent heard the term 'lootbox' in years even though you all cried about lootboxes so hard
I recently got back into playing Pokemon Rumble World on the 3DS. While playing I also realized that there hasn't been any spinoff. Am gonna miss these types of games as I think they're way more enjoyable then the main games.
And I am here one of the fans of pokemon duel, that unironically being one of my favorite board games overall, at least my device couldnt handle anymore and when I got a new one the game had shut down like 1-2 months ago, that was real sad
Apparently all it takes to be a main series game is "it (at least partially) incorporates the main series battle system". Guess this means the battle sims are also main series games.
I feel it's worth mentioning that a sizeable contributor to Pokemon Go's "drop in popularity" was a lot of bot accounts used for mapping services getting banned because they violated TOS
The Pokémon Ranger series are my favorite spin-offs. It’d be interesting if they ever came up with a way to do Pokémon Ranger with motion controls; Controlling the Capture Styler like the rangers in the anime do..
Another possibility is that kids today are a lot more informed on the kind of games these spinoffs are with the internet being a lot more accessible. I remember advertisements for Mystery dungeon and Ranger and only knowing the basic premise of the game and wanting them after that without even seeing much gameplay. Now every 8 year old has internet and can find every bit of info on new games and decide whether they really want that game.
Probably not gonna happen. The reason it was made in the first place was to put a Pokémon game on the home system, that’s just the norm with the switch. Second the company who made it have 20 employees who’ve worked exclusively on mobile games for over a decade
Something worth pointing out about those high quality animations is that, while fine in games that are JUST battle sims, they can wear out their welcome fast in Colosseum and XD due to how long they can be. Combined with the fact double battles are the standard for the story mode you can probably imagine how aggravating these games can be to new players nowadays. Doesn't bother me but it's a thing I've noticed others say.
How about the fact Pokemon is less an IP now and more a cult? Gamefreak knows they don't have to try or really even tell the truth to their audience anymore because they know full well they'll buy anything they release for Pokemon. Spinoffs are just more investment and effort they know they don't have to do. And it all doesn't matter if people know this is the case (and trust me, we know by now) but Pokemon fans will rush to protect just about any choice made by Gamefreak.
Adding to to your points, there's also the business side of it. Like, Pokemon is the highest grossing media franchise of all time, but 90% of that revenue doesn't come from the games, it comes from the merchandise. The games are often "just the trailers" since they're used to set up the upcoming merchandise, anime, manga, trading cards etc which make that 90% of revenue. This "lessens" the importance of spin-off games from a business perspective. Because the main console games already "do their job" in promoting the real money makers as well as selling 10+ million copies on their own. And the Spin off games barely crack the 2-3 million sales range. And There are already of Mobile Spin offs making lots of revenue.
People don't argue that legends Arceus is a spinoff just because it doesn't have gyms in it. We argue that because they made massive changes to the battle system, catching mechanics, and the overall flow of gameplay. I don't see how one could argue that it should be considered a main series game
I second this, i bought Pokken Tournament as a fighting game fan and it remains the only Pokémon game i have on the system, i bought my switch in 2021. If Harada-sama came and made a second one i'd buy it in a heart beat
The mystery dungeon music really pulled at my nostalgia. I loved explorers of sky. The one Pokemon story that was pretty well made IMO. And it just saddens me that we'll never have another one because I also prefer the pixel art over 3d models. Yeah I said it
I'm very torn on a remake of colosseum/XD. They're without a doubt one of the best spinoffs pokemon has made, but remakes are unlikely to capture the spirit of what made those games fun. I almost want a 3rd installment, but I feel like implementation won't be there
Outside of the obvious XD and Coliseum remakes/sequels (Still holding out for Shadows of Orre) Damn we need something else. PLA was such a cool spin on the series, even if it wasn't a spin off, and I want to see what they can come up with.
There definitely feels like there’s a hole in this franchise that’s been created with all these mobile titles. Go, Masters, and Cafe Mix get updates frequently, but it just feels like “content” and nothing worth getting excited over. I know the DS is long behind us, but it doesn’t stop me from wanting a new Ranger game or Battle Revolution (especially since I love VGC).
I'm a diehard Pokémon fan and played basically everything. But hands down, nothing can beat Pokémon mystery dungeon explorers of time, darkness and sky. The mystery dungeon games were the best thing to happen to Pokémon
Mystery Dungeon is probably my favorite, but played Pokémon Shuffle for a good while. So I guess the spinoff games do still live on in mobile form. So maybe an idea that could combine the best of both worlds would be something like one for the storage apps like Pokémon Home & future counterparts with competitive modes & other kinds of interactivity such as customization based exchanges with other such games (mobile or otherwise)?
What spinoff do you want to see make a comeback this year?

And also the Ranger series or the Shadow pokemon games

I think one thing that really proves your point is New Pokemon Snap. A sequel to Pokemon Snap was hyped up for years, for so long, and when it finally came out, it was only talked about for like a week and only amassed around 2 million sales. Really shows that the audience for these spinoffs is way smaller than most people realize.
It was talked about longer than that
Two problems here with this system despite having a good argument behind it.
Let's face it though. A 60 dollar game where all you do is take pictures is not exactly the most appealing package.

It makes me so sad to know that we may never get another Pokémon Conquest. It would be so cool if they brought it back.
I liked the game, but what if instead of having a crossover with Nobunaga's Ambition it was a crossover with Fire Emblem?
We are gonna get a new mystery dungeon. This guys has no idea what he's talking about

I would love to see Mystery Dungeon and Conquest come back. Just because they'd be so much better on n Switch
Mystery Dungeon got a Switch entry
@@nohrianscum9791 a remake, not a new entry
@@nohrianscum9791 No, Switch got a port of the DS game, which is NOT a comeback of the series on Switch.
Tbf with XD and Colosseum
Most people wouldn't be able to get them just because of how slow and tedious they are
The only reason I never played them as a kid was because my parents didn't let me use the Wii eshop...
@@zoruasnivy At least you had access to it. We didn’t even have Internet until late 2014, and by that point Nintendo WFC was shut down.
@@zoruasnivy XD and Colosseum weren't on the Wii eshop. It wasn't until the 3DS/WiiU that Nintendo started having retail games available through the eshop
For the Wii and DSi, it was only WiiWare, DSiWare and Virtual Console games up on Nintendo's eshops
By the time the eshop was offering full retail games, XD and Colosseum weren't being sold by Nintendo any more
On the point of people “wisening up,” I disagree.
Remember the time where people hated on Gen 5 for no reason other than "it's not 3d!1!!!"?
The optimist in me is content with the fact we were able to have our childhood. It’s time to let the next generation have their fun.
I think genius sonority has stopped making games
Most people that worked at Genius Sonority ended up working at Game Freak, like James Turner for example.
@@bdt2002gaming Yeah, have their fun with rushed and horrible games.
@@JunaidWolf3 I just looked this up, apparently they did work for Pokémon’s puzzle games like Battle Trozei, Shuffle, and Café Remix. Huh.
I greatly miss Mystery Dungeon. I played them over and over again, and it still has an influence on me with my current profile picture.

The originals and Explorers were so good. I'm sad that they ended up trying to push the series in different directions that never quite worked. Even Mystery Dungeon DX just didn't feel the same.
Sadly I believe the answer is A) They are focusing exclusively on mainline titles and B) They aren't as profitable as mainline titles.
It's also C) Videogames take more and more money time and workers to make than ever leading to it just not being worth the opportunity costs.
Which is probably a big factor here too
It’s pretty rare for a spinoff series to have sales remotely approaching its primary incarnation. Mario Kart is an extreme outlier.
That's why they are pumping out the main series Pokemon games that end up glitchy at launch.

I can imagine a few reasons we haven’t gotten a new one since 2010, surprisingly none of which are related to “Oh GuArDiAn SiGnS dIdN’t SeLl WeLl”
-Making a fourth removes the whole concept of a “trilogy” existing
-All three Ranger games have some connection to Generation 4, which would have ended by the time a fourth game came out
-The company that produced this series (Creatures Inc.) had A LOT on their plates during pretty much all of the 2010s, with both PokéPark games and every 3D main series game requiring their efforts, as well as Detective Pikachu (which also sold less than Guardian Signs but had a sequel announced anyway)
When the time and hardware is right, I could very likely see this game getting the New Pokémon Snap treatment, title not withstanding.
Pokemon Ranger is crying in a corner due to how neglected it is.
I can understand that Creatures is likely busier with the core games now and even if they weren't they'd just be making mobile games because that's what profitable right now,
but something about exploring these grandiose locations as a Pikachu or a Unova starter, performing small tasks to befriend other Pokemon, and taking part in fun minigames just... feels like the more grandiose yet still chill experience I miss.
Nailed everything on my list only thing I’d personally add is Pokémon conquest
i’m praying for a pokepark 3. pokepark 2 is in my top favorite games of all time because of how much it solidified my love for pokémon. i fell in love with the series and the pokémon that have been made since and would love to have a similar experience with the newer pokémon
I would die for a new mystery dungeon game I've been wanting a new entry for years now with no end to that wait in sight
On the bright side a rom maker for sky, so we can make out own mystery dungeon games
IDK what I'd do for a Colosseum HD remaster
Ranger would have been great with the wii remote with a few tweaks
Technically the orre games are mainline
@@milkdrinker7 they aren't, they should be based on the quality of them, but they aren't.

I’ve heard the “Twitter echo chamber” comment a million times, but the way you said/explained it was mind blowing
To be fair, considering how greedy the main series is, it's not surprising Pokémon spin-offs went the route of mobile, the most greedy platform.
Greedy companies milking the ultimate greedy IP.
@JPRPokeTrainer98 Spinoffs are the games that fill in the gaps between core games. We need them...😭😭😭😭
Agreed. The cracks in the current model of one main series game after another are really starting to show. Spinoffs give them time work out the bugs & create the best user experience possible.

Wait, people see the Orre games as "3D battle Simulators"?
That's honestly an afterthought vs. their story modes.

The fact that the last Puzzle League game seems to be a minigame in New Leaf that you get by using the in-game New 3DS item is hilarious to me.
I feel like spinoff games are a somewhat dying breed for AAA franchises in general, or if there are spinoffs they're usually mobile games now.
Even if we don't get a new title in the Mystery Dungeon series, I'm still holding out hope for an Explorers DX announcement in February. If not this year then at least next year. It's got to happen at some point.
I hope so badly 😢
I agree, provided it brings everything we like about it back, and then some, like better storage, do you have any idea how easy it is to max out your storage.
@@joshcoy6748 We need Emile to start working on a PMD Explorers playthrough just so that his luck can get Nintendo to announce a DX version on Switch.

Great video
Given the whole drawing circles of Pokémon Ranger I've been curious why it's never got a mobile game version since can do it easily on touch screen
I've never been a huge fan of it and only played a little on a borrowed copy but think it could fit in today's mobile game scene
I agree, sky is my favorite, when my friends suggested starting over, I eagerly joined them!
Technically, we had 5 Mystery Dungeon games (not counting remakes/versions), but that 5th one was a Japan only Wii game with three! different versions and not much story to them.

Pokemon Duel is my favorite Pokemon spinoff of all time. The battle system was very in-depth and fun, and the characters in the story mode were quite likeable and interesting.
I liked it just as well and couldn’t hate the character
Agreed but I had to take a break from it, when I come back they added z moves and I hated it
Honestly, I’d kinda be okay with seeing some more mobile spinoffs if they really use the appeal of mobile like Go, Duel, and Masters did.
Pokemon Conquest with some more in-depth game mechanics would be awesome, maybe with multiple moves on Pokemon
Duel was really fun, it's a shame that the actual TFG it was based on never really got off the grounds.
I’d love a Pokémon fire emblem spinoff, it’s just BEGGING to be made
@@MustacheDLuffy It was going to be made, but Pokemon Conquest was far in development at the time. Another big part is that console games nowadays are far more expensive to develop than DS games were

Isn't technically Legends of Arceus a spinoff and not a traditional main line series game?
I think you have the mystery dungeon relationship a bit backwards. I believe the Pokémon company actually approached Chunsoft with the idea. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that a lot of the early spinoffs have some sort of connection with HAL Laboratories, which has a very experimental history with its Kirby franchise.

All the spin-offs are now either on your phone or free to play there you go.

Honestly playing Pokémon duel was so much fun! I love strategy games and when it was discontinued it really sucked.
So many Spin-offs were BANGERS. I get instantly overwhelmed by nostalgia when watching Pokemon Rangers, MD, Colosseum, Snap, etcetc... Good childhood

After Arceus, I'm guessing if Colosseum released today, it'd be considered part of the main series.
Apparently all it takes to be a main series game is "it (at least partially) incorporates the main series battle system". Guess this means the battle sims are also main series games.
No. Mainline means it's a $60 Pokemon game made by Game Freak. Colosseum doesn't fit that criterium.
Pokemon unite is Pokemon rumble and legends arceus is practically Pokemon quest
Another possibility is that kids today are a lot more informed on the kind of games these spinoffs are with the internet being a lot more accessible. I remember advertisements for Mystery dungeon and Ranger and only knowing the basic premise of the game and wanting them after that without even seeing much gameplay. Now every 8 year old has internet and can find every bit of info on new games and decide whether they really want that game.
I just want another battle revolution like game ☹️
Probably not gonna happen. The reason it was made in the first place was to put a Pokémon game on the home system, that’s just the norm with the switch. Second the company who made it have 20 employees who’ve worked exclusively on mobile games for over a decade
PLA is a confirmed gen 8 game. BDSP is more of a spin off than PLA haha
hot take, but i love the spinoffs more than i do the mainline games.
“Pokémon GO was a fad!”
*Me, watching this video while actively playing Pokémon GO.* 👀
Something worth pointing out about those high quality animations is that, while fine in games that are JUST battle sims, they can wear out their welcome fast in Colosseum and XD due to how long they can be.
Where’s Miror B, Nintendo?! I know you have him! Just let me see him moonwalk again!
People don't argue that legends Arceus is a spinoff just because it doesn't have gyms in it. We argue that because they made massive changes to the battle system, catching mechanics, and the overall flow of gameplay. I don't see how one could argue that it should be considered a main series game
Also...can't interact with any of the main series games from that generation
A Stadium mini game style spin off with online would be AWESOME. You have tons of species of Pokémon to design minigames around
Need more mystery dungeon in my life
I second this, i bought Pokken Tournament as a fighting game fan and it remains the only Pokémon game i have on the system, i bought my switch in 2021. If Harada-sama came and made a second one i'd buy it in a heart beat
I want another battle revolution so badly
The mystery dungeon music really pulled at my nostalgia. I loved explorers of sky. The one Pokemon story that was pretty well made IMO. And it just saddens me that we'll never have another one because I also prefer the pixel art over 3d models. Yeah I said it
I'm very torn on a remake of colosseum/XD. They're without a doubt one of the best spinoffs pokemon has made, but remakes are unlikely to capture the spirit of what made those games fun. I almost want a 3rd installment, but I feel like implementation won't be there
Oh, I played pokemon Duel. Was a good time, got grandmaster.
I'm gonna let you finish, but Stadium is the best spin-off of all time
“Of all time!” *shrugs and gives back the microphone*
Oh Pokémon Duel, the ill-fated game that died not once, but TWICE!!
HOW DOES A GAME DIE TWO SEPARATE TIMES!?
wasn't Snap a spinoff?
“Charizard does his taxes” 😂😂😂
Outside of the obvious XD and Coliseum remakes/sequels (Still holding out for Shadows of Orre)
Damn we need something else.
I want another colosseum style game where I can use VGC strats through the entire 2v2 gameplay ❤❤❤
It's kinda sad that Orre won't get anymore sequels because the niche they had is basically moot, that being a Pokemon game on a console.
