LONDON KING'S CROSS STATION On 28th October 1988
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of London King's Cross taken on 28/10/1988. A time when nearly all of ECML services were HST hauled. The class 91 was on test and peculiar combinations of stock was used such as on this day a rake of sleeper coaches with an HST power car at the front/rear and the class 91 the other end. Class 31's were seen on a newspaper train arriving into "the Cross". I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

Nice! If I remember correctly, I was at Everton Gate Box level crossing near Sandy, Beds, on this day, specifically to see the 91s on test, so would have seen some of these services!

Incredible to think that the earliest Class 317 units, then only six years old, were already on their second or third line.

last of em only just went out of service too.
If you accept TW Metros having a TOPS number due to running from Pelaw to Sunderland Central on Network Rail managed tracks then Id reckon they're they oldest regular service EMU/DMUs now operating (unless some old Class 43 + attendant sets still are in places).

The train being hauled by 31430 "Sister Dora", at 12:56, wasn't a newspaper train, but a parcels train. By this time, newspaper trains on BR had ceased, and whilst it's the case that many vans were still going about with "newspapers" on their sides, they were being used as general parcels vans.

Another fantastic film. The amount of clag hanging in the air was amazing to see! Especially infront of the gasworks tunnels. Great to see the 91 on a test train and the 317s in BR and NSE livery.

Preps for electrifying north of Peterborough included, the same summer tidying up at Newark with both the old Bottesford line, down yard and Gypsum bays finally going. None had seen much traffic since 1983. Were there still liners from KX terminal?

01:32 - Blue stripe, red stripe, third stripe white, its the train that'll make you feel alright . . . . . Network South East for your family!
My apologies to anyone reading this who worked for Aquafresh - or now has an ear-worm of the 1980s advert (but after all, this is 1980s railway footage). Just think, their corporate colours could have reminded me/us of "Whoooooa BodyForm! BodyForm for yoooooo".
I concur with @Tornado922 though, amazing, even in the 1980s to see the "clag" - Britain then, it must be said, was a scruffy place even if some of those HSTs were in complete Speedbird/Intercity liveried sets (and is there anything worse than a mismatched set?!).
Think of 1988 like this, Japan had had Shinkansen trains for 24 years by now - even if HSTs were great (and they were), diesel was a folly (understandable one could guess), but if Class 86s were so good for the WCML, how come the ECML didn't get similar, sooner (and that's as good as the Class 55s were for the time).

PS. Can you ever see a train rolling north from LKX without thinking of Roy Budd's Get Carter theme tune?
