Please please pretty please, always give us "real" units and freedom units at the same time, like "850m/2800ft". Would make the message of the video so much easier to digest rather than having to switch between youtube and unit converter all the time (at least for those like myself who aren't used to thinking in inches/yards/feet/miles/bald eagles per big macs, etc.) 👍

Great work Rob!. I've been riding my new Rise for about a month now, and I'm really impressed by the range and efficiency as well. I've not run it through a full charge in a single ride yet, but I have done a wide variety of rides from rolling XC to park-style loops with a lot of vertical in a short distance, and I've done rides fully in Eco, fully in Trail, fully in Boost, and a mix. On every ride that I have checked, if I extrapolate based on my actual elevation gain, distance, and battery % used, it fully matches what Orbea claim in their marketing (website) and in the Blue Paper (owners book). Deeply impressed, both by the bike, and by the honestly of Orbea's claims on the range. I've not seen any need to even contemplate the range extender yet; for various reasons, I don't have time for rides that would be long enough to require it!

Another great video Rob. Really useful to see just how far you can go on one of these 'small' eMTBs. Orbea really have nailed it with the Rise. Yet to do a range test on my Marin Alpine Trail E1 but its on my list of vids to make - so far though, with its 504Wh battery and 24kg weight, I have to say the range isn't massively dissimilar to some of the numbers you mention in your vid. Lots of myths to be de-bunked for new eMTB riders so great to see a real world test - nice one.

Thanks, Rob, again, useful and informative. I'm certainly finding the internal battery to be sufficient - 26 miles/3500ft off-road and 10% battery remaining is typical. Might still opt for the Extender for those BIG days out... I tend to use lower settings and Boost is only 55NM, Trail 45 or so, Eco 35 or so in Profile 2 and Eco and Trail set lower for Profile 1.

Great video Rob. Honest and relevant comments throughout which is very informative
I recently took delivery of my - Orbea Rise M20 2021 - Coal Blue / Red Gold and really like it .
I previously had a Canyon Spectral On which was really good but I found it too heavy and it was too easy to just plough through trails like a monster truck. Going down hill at over 40 mph over rough terrain was exhilarating but not my typical type of ride experience
I do nearly all of my riding in eco or trail mode. I also switch off the motors and run sections unaided to keep my fitness level consistent - 61 now and have been riding MTBs since I was in my early 20s and still ride my Whyte 901 too
The Rise is fitted with Shimano SC-EM800 Display and that allows me to see at a glance speed , range etc
I took the bike to Swinley Forrest the other day and it handled the trails there brilliantly. I really like the way the bike feels and it inspires you to do more. My previous bikes have included Orange 5 and Whyte T130 so the Rise is quite similar in terms of trail capabilities
Will consider upgrading to bigger disc on the front at some point and possibly swapping out the brake pistons for 4 pot but they seem fine so far.
Having spent many hours reviewing and considering lots of bikes I reckon Orbea have really produced something very exceptional and it will serve me well going forwards . At 61 I still want to do 3 or 4 hour rides and your review confirms that is more than doable
Ps - we met briefly at the eBike centre and you kindly offered to let me try out your first Levo . Great to see your subscribers and popularity growing

Great video Rob. By way of contrast my 2021 Whyte E-160 S has 1300 miles under its belt, I weigh 12st dead and last week on a mild day I rode 20.8 miles of Surrey Hills trails in the new Trail + mode with an indicated 27 miles remaining. This was a pretty pain-free experience and I’d say it’s a massive improvement over the old Trail mode.

65 kim's on my M10 doing undulating cross country track, most of it on trail, a bit of boost on pinch climbs and then 1/2 an hour in principally eco mode when range anxiety started to kick in. 100 + kg rider, turned EMTB support up a notice, maxed out the torque on Boost mode. Very happy with the power and range so far....typically getting 35-40 km's riding up and down jump lines.

Really cool video Rob. Looks like you´re enjoying the RISE. I love mine. It´s a pretty tough assist you used there if I understood, profile 2 with max torque which must be pretty close to profile 1 Boost? I´m your weight and use profile 1, generaly starting in ECO to warm up and then mixing up ECO and TRAIL depending on the trail. I find that I get between 1500 and 1700m of climbing, here distance is irrelevant as it´s steep both up and down!
I got the impression that you are like me though, enjoying how the bike handles more than anything else. It´s just like a good trail bike on the way down!

Interested to try the changes you made to the assist settings. I love mine but for normal weekend rides it's so efficient I can usually get away with using boost everywhere - 40km and over 800m elevation is possible on just the internal battery for me like this.

I ran a similar test on my rocky mountain altitude powerplay. Using Trail mode set at 60% and ludicrous mode set at 100% the 632 wh battery delivered 76 km with 4% left on the battery this compares favourably with your test. Granted I have to carry the full weight of the bike whenever I use it so I don’t benefit from the weight saving of the bike tested here but I also have the advantage of up to 108 NM of torque whenever required.

Rob, when do you think some standard will be made where motors can be swapped out for old ones? The thing putting me off an ebike is that in 3-4 years when I want to upgrade to a new motor or my old one breaks, the mounting standards have changed and I’m stuck with buying old new stock or second hand motors.

Currently riding a YT Jeffsy, I don't know whether to go full fat and have the best of both with the Rail/Jeffsy combo, or take this as a more familiar/lightweight ride with the added umph from the motor. 41.3 km and 2800 ft, or 850 meters. Today I rode my Rise M20 on similar, though generally a little rougher terrain. Burned through one-third of the battery and covered 16.6 km and 619 meters elevation gain. I weight less -- 55 kg -- but am older --67 -- and likely less fit. On an earlier ride of the same general area, I burned half the battery and got 20 km and 750 meters. So it looks like we're getting similar distance but my lighter weight is giving me considerably more elevation. Cheers Rob.

Thanks for the effort and the very likeable video. In my opinion range can only be judged from the outside if you compare it to the ride on a bio bike. So if you got 42km with 2800m of elevation. How far would you come without the motor/battery? Half of it? So does the bike doubles your range?

So you have tested both Levo SL and Orbea Rise M10.. have you got a comparison for these 2? Pros and cons? What do u like best and least about them? Seems like Levo SL got lot more range than Rise M10? From most reviews I can see that Levo SL is more planted profile and Rise is poppy profile? And lastly, I have been riding my Levo SL with power off lots of time without problems and I am relatively fit. Will that be possible to do same with the Rise M10 you think? Will it harm the Shimano battery riding with power off??

decent... I've got a canyon Neuron:ON 8 and covered over 1050 miles since March... i live in one of the highest places in England and each ride is typically around 30 miles, and about 20 miles now is in eco mode (EP8 motor) and trail mode to get me back up the hill... and normally have 2-3 bars left on the battery...and this is around 2000ft elevation too..
and my cadence is also around 85-90rpm, and the chain hasn't began to stretch yet as i measure it after each ride....
and I've only used boost mode a few times... the terrain i ride on is fields, woods, bridleways and fireroads, and a few bits of normal roads inbetween...

Day 1 i rode 28 kms on a flat route with no elevation and on Eco mode; Day 2 just 11 kms but Climbed the same hill a few times and was riding with a group of full powered dudes and had to use the Boost mode all the time to keep up with them. Day 3 rode 26 kms mostly on trail mode.

I thought it would be a good comprise to ride with full fat ebikes but it wasn't. I was not blown away with the bike either. I did fall off it which may have jaundiced my opinion a bit.

when it comes to Ebike range. there are just so many factors. im always shocked when i hear ppl with 500-800whr battery packs only getting 30-50kms of range. i suspect that people think they are more fit then they actually are.
my 880whr pack nets me on average 150km of range. however i have gone as low as 70kms on 1 charge, but i also did 310km's on a charge once.
the two biggest factors i would say are elevation gain / weight on that trip, and power mode. when i got only 70km's i was using around 500w with bursts of full power at 1,500w. while when i did the 310km ride i hardly ever used more then 150w

It would be nice to see how far it could be tiden on a flat battery from the start.
It's the limiting range that still puts me off getting an e bike.

This bike is al about lighweight, and thus, little range.
Several bikes has over 700wh of battery, you need to work hard to run a battey like that down.
Coummuting, my 630wh battery gave me over 120km range.
Some brands run an internal belt, and has just about no resistance pedaling with the bike turned off.

I can confirm my h15 rise with my 90kgs of meat and gear on it will make 2000m up on the internal 540wh battery, 2200m if I really push myself /too hard/. That is really impressive.
I stress I ride mainly in eco and only super tech/steep sections will be tackled in trail/boost. I think it rides closest to analog bike you can get.
    Rear hub died 200kms in.

Hey rob, nice review! Im looking for a second bike. I got already a bike with bosch gen4. But im looking into a light emtb, do you have an recommendation for me? Levo sl comp carbon or orbea rise? I prefer the levo, but i dont know if it fits my suits, because im not so trained. So are the 35nm of the levo enough? Thanks!

I own the Orbea Gain (road e-bike) and I love Orbea's approach to e-bikes and assist. I really want the Rise.
My one question is how does the bike handle with a dead battery. Does it feel like a normal bike? My only experience is hub motor style systems.

    • @sergeantsensible8146

I have the M20 and I ride on the road to my local trails with the motor turned off. While the bikes feels slightly “heavy” I find it pedals just fine. The motor assist cuts out around 15 mph and I can keep the speed around 17mph so I’m not getting any assist anyway. It’s definitely slightly sluggish compared to my non electric Giant Trance but its nice to know if your battery dies and you’re away from home you’ll make it back.

So I have had a Whyte T130 and Orange 5 . Riding my Rise uphill with no assistance is like riding a downhill bike - it’s doable but tough . . It is absolutely fine on the flat and downhill . I keep my motor off at times just to keep my heart rate up and ensure I don’t lose my core fitness . I rarely run in boost and reserve that for gnarly climbs of steep chutes

Great review, extremely informative. Thats pretty impressive numbers for a LW ebike and almost puts a full power to shame. Covered 63km and 4100 feet of climbing yesterday with 12% left on 2020 Giant Trance. How did feel with no pedal assist

Having nothing but trouble with my range extender. First the bike wouldn't recognise it so I sent it back. Replacement extender was the same. Back and forth with Tredz/orbea for weeks and then it suddenly worked. Then while riding and the extender was depleted the bike wouldn't stay on unless I disconnected the extender. Now the bike has started not recognising it again 😡
