DODGE update! then to Crewe Heritage Centre for March's Off The Rails classic car meet | Cheshire

- Where is the Dodge pickup at with its recent running issues? In today's video, I talk about how it's running and generally about things at Old Classic Car HQ, before setting off to Crewe for the regular "Off The Rails" classic car meeting where all manner of interesting older cars turn up. Mrs OCC once again piloted the Mk1 MX5, and dad met us there in his MGB.
There was a good mix of classic cars in attendance, some regular "faces" and other old cars that we hadn't seen before. I had a detailed chat with the owners of two fab old Citroens - a DS and a Ami 8 - so thanks to them for sparing the time to talk about their French motor-cars and also demonstrate some of their cars' quirky features.
Other highlights for March 2023's meeting at the Crewe Heritage Centre included a significant gathering of Austin Maestros (a model celebrating its 40th birthday), a very smart Morris Oxford, a metallic green Granada Ghia 2.8, and a diminutive and sporty-sounding Rochdale Olympic, to name just a few. Going there gave us a sense of deja-vu as we'd been there just one day before for a toy fair, at which a few pocket-sized gems were procured.
It was a grand morning out, although matters automotive didn't entirely go to plan as has been quite common of late ...

I had a Morris Minor when they were plentifull here in Canada. Cost me $50.00 from my brother-in -law in 1969ish.He had a growing family and I was a bakers apprentice with meagre income.The car came with a leaky fuel tank which I fiberglassed.Great town car but not up to the freeway.I also installed a clutch and hand lapped in new valves.I was 17 and could work easily on that car.I loved to hand crank it in parking lots as that was a novelty! CHEERS from HERE!!!

Love seeing Austin A40, my Dad had one when I was a kid, mid 60’s registration number was VAC 40. We lived in Bath.
Loved the Ami 8. Those old Citroens were certainly full of character. I used to have an early Renault 5 that also had a dashboard gearchange.
Another great video. Loved the garage/workshop tour. Never get tired of seeing old Citreons either, particularly DS.

Owned 2 Morris Minors in the late 80’s into the early 90’s, both 2 door, one on a ‘F’ plate, the other ‘H’.
The Nash Metropolitan is my take home as memories came flooding back as a 9yr old in 1966.
Uncle Richard and Aunt Anne owned a black and white Nash like this one. I remember getting in the back to sit on the small seat and hitting my head on the rear window. Strange the silly things one can remember. I always liked the yellow and white version. Nice and cheerful looking. I enjoyed the video Richard, and I hope I live long enough to see your A40 back on the road. Cheers 🍻

The Citroen Ami is a “6”, the reason it does not have a reverse rake rear screen is that it is an estate often called a “Break”. The estates were available both as 6 and later 8’s. I have a 1974 Ami 8 Break in my collection.

Good morning Rick, my Sunday ritual complete, watching your videos whilst having my breakfast, a very enjoyable way to start a laid back day. I liked the Ami 8 but I much prefer the Dyane. I have never owned either, but have driven a Dyane and a 2CV. I liked the Maxi and in my younger days in the Army, driving garrison vehicles, used to crave to drive the Maxi, but always ended up in the Mk1 Escort 😒.
The marking on the oil can is the cypher of the War Office, which dates from the 1850s, lasting upto 1964 when it became under the Ministry of Defence. It is in fact an arrow and I believe it has something to do with heraldry. Sometimes it is accommpanied with letters (WO or WD) or others relating to Empire or later Commonwealth countries. Often a date may be included, or rather, a year. It appeared on everything, clothing, bedding, cutlery and plates.
I'm amazed how often I re-visit a box of old spanners (say), and find ones with the WD stamp on them that I hadn't noticed before.
On my old banger's if I had blocked jet issues, I backfired it a couple of times and that always got me home. Always leave the air cleaner in place when doing this in case of fire.
Brilliant video great info and so many memories attached to these vehicles , I had a later Ami 6 which had a higher compression ratio than the 2cv. Great car!
Love that Morris Oxford! I've been very tempted to have one myself, but so many seem to have quite a common problem with the paint cracking between the rear wing and the deck panel. Had the same problem when I had a Triumph Vitesse mk2.
A Dodgy mystery RJ. The DS is magnificent, they always were and not out of place today. I did own a wonderful black Morris Minor in the 70's, with a red interior. Suspension mounts came through the rear floor. First time I have ever seen an Rochdale, I need to read up about them it looks interesting. Sunday morning breakfast viewing well and truly taken care of. The Kestrel and Hornets were also always lovely cars. Another good one.
I liked the 'roving reporter' interviews and the demonstration of how to access the wheel on the DS. There were other cars that I don't think we have seen before, Wolseley Hornet being one to mention. A great find with the picture Mrs. OCC, very nice. Looking on the bright side at least the Dodge 'got you there and back to see how far it is'! It just let itself down when it arrived home. She is an old girl so count to ten! Thanks Rick just a bit investigation to do on the Dodge.👍👍

Another excellent video! My favourite has to be the Riley Monaco, but only by a whisker from the Austin Healey Sprite with that stunning bodywork and super wire wheels and the resplendent looking Morris Oxford. The owner interview is a welcome addition; it's really interesting to hear the history of the cars at these meets, so more of those please. Good to see Mrs OCC has an eye for a bargain; how about her own charity shop channel to complement yours and the Youthful Assistant's?!

@@oldclassiccarUK P.S. Meant to say that I enjoyed seeing your collection of oil cans. Many years ago I had a similar problem to that of the Dodge and eventually tracked it down to a petrol filler cap washer disintegrating and blocking the fuel line.
Another corker! Those Citroens,superb!! As a child I used to bag a lift to Coventry Cathedral every Sunday from our neighbour In their Citroen Safari ...(grey beige with Green cloth seats) Dad had a Riley 4/72 ,nice but not as exciting !
Worth doing a proper clean of the whole fuel system once spring is sprung...

If you want to know more about the similarities between a DS and a P6 type in Hubnut DS and it will bring up 3 videos he did on my cars while he was in Tasmania. And…..the DS Party Tricks video has gone on to be his most popular video ever and reached 1 million views yesterday! That is my brag out of the way. 😀 BTW, you really need some more oil cans. 🤣 Now you tell us you had a V12 BMW and previously a V12 Jag. 😳
Ha there are many more oilcans dotted about and hanging from the rafters, I've yet to test them out. Re V12s, yes in the 1990s I ran a Series 1 XJ12L, later there was an ex-motorshow E32-series 750iL (1987, one of the first) then later an E32 1994 750i, all dark blue. For a time I also ran an E38 750iL (5.4L) that dad had.
A great turn out of varied Classics. Would like to think that many will many will find their way to Apedale Valley Light Railway (NuL), Classic Car Event on 28th August 2023. Free entry. Not too far for you Richard, with plenty of scope for recording.
Thanks for the heads-up I'll make a note of it, I hadn't heard of that railway. I spent many many hours in NuL when my Dodge truck was being rebuilt (in a building behind what was the Knights BMW dealer).
I do like that Rochdale, a bit like a scaled down E Type.
Based on labeling down our way I assume those oilers displaying the "K" means the oil is kosher.
Loved the Ami8 - had a 72 estate for many years until rust took its tool! I found mine had much better performance than a 2CV. I once managed 87 downhill on the motorway!

Using that sort of oil helped the RAF win the B of B. Added 10 mph to the Spit and 15 to the Hurricain. Did not help the Defiant but then nothing could have I suppose.
Hi 👋 This is a good video. I like French cars and it was great you engaging with the owner of the Citroen Ami. French cars are amazing. I didn't know that the front seats could be removed so easily. And what an economical motorcar , small and yet enough space to put for luggage or bags of grocery shopping in the back. The Ami wasn't released here in NZ. I don't know why. I've heard that Citroens have a different gear change operation, a lever that comes out of the dashboard. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@@oldclassiccarUK Yes , I have never been in a Citroën. We didn't have the Dyane model here either.
Years ago, I had a 105e Anglia that would cut out if it was driven at all hard, it was happy to idle and pootle about all day, hard driving was just not on. Eventually it was traced to a long wood shaving that was caught, lengthwise, in the end of the pick up pipe in the fuel tank. There was enough space for a small amount of petrol to get past, but the extra draw at full throttle and high revs caused it to block the pipe enough to starve the carb of fuel.
Curiously, in the early 80's, a similar problem afflicted some of the fwd Escorts, which was traced to the fuel filter being drawn up the pipe by suction and cutting the flow. The cure was to cut the end of the pipe at an angle, simple but a pain if the tank was full and needed draining first!
Just wondering if the rotor arm has a small crack in it, it happened to me !
Possible, I have some NOS rotor arms in a box. If I get chance tomorrow I'll have a tinker with it.
I learnt a lesson the hard way on an electrical problem. Replaced everything on a Pug. 403 and then happened to open the bonnet at night and could clearly see a spark arcing across the top of the coil to the king lead. The coil had a hairline crack in the top. Grrrrrr.
I remember going to Silverstone in a friends dads home assembled Rochdale Olympic , first car I ever saw 100mph on the speedo (probably optimistic) . I’ll kick myself as an ex mechanic but can anyone tell me what engine was in it ? Cheers Simon
Another great video Rick. I love that DS was funny the owners demonstrating the dismantling procedures 😂. Your comments on the Morris 1000 reminded me that of the 62 cars and bikes I’ve owned over the years, the only one ever given a name was ‘Horace the Morris’ 😂
Are you able to get a compressor on the output from the tank to blow through the fuel pipe. Maybe some crud from the old tank is still lurking?
Thanks, yes it's always interesting to chat with the owners of these great old cars. The Lada gent the month before was full of info on his car too. I think I'll probably have a good close look at the Dodge's fuel system and yes, blow the line through. I'm sure it was done when the new tank was made and installed, but won't harm to do it again. I suspect your spark generally is on the weak side as you say the accelerator pump squirts in enough neat petrol to wet the plugs and stop it from firing up . 6 volt systems work on a knife edge at best a lot of the time .Cars seldom used, can often be carrying old fuel (i.e over 6 months old ) some of the more volatile elements tend to evaporate and you are left with a tank of liquid that will work OK in cars made in say the last 40 years but low compression low spark voltage carburettor-ed cars become more difficult to start. Very fresh fuel and a rather more punchy coil might ease worries on this score maybe a hidden electronic spark conversion and or a change to 12v. Honda's stationary engines have always had a beefy ignition spark and tend to start first pull. Modern cars tend to have 50-100,000 volt sparks a 30s 6v may have only 10-15,000v - hence the provision of starting handles .Coils often fail.
I do have a new coil in stock, I bought it when big Dodge was being sorted out years ago. The engine fires right up on the squirt of fuel that the accelerator pump emits then it just stops once that slug of fuel has been used up, which to me suggests a restriction somewhere in the carb but I could be mistaken. If I get chance I'll have a play today.
Fuel pump? Loss of priming,perhaps?
I'll have a proper check around when I get a mo, another thought was the fuel tank pressuring up but no signs of a hiss when removing the cap so probably not that.
I can see you're sitting on the fence between collector and hoarder, what with all those oil cans you've got. Be careful.....

Yes, I have memories of the Morris Minor's, I can't stand the damned things haha. Before I get shot to bits, sorry guys but those things have always been one of my most disliked cars of all time.
I liked mine overall although I did find the doors a bit "tinny" when you closed them, although it didn't help that previously I'd run an old Volvo! Plus the brake master cylinder being shoved underneath didn't seem like a great idea.
CONDENSERS are notorious for failing on occasional used vehicles.
