I had my first car in UK for 2.5 years now. First year was 808, second year was 880 and third was 1.5k. After I called them and asked to cancel auto renewal before it goes through, they lowered it to 920 because this is what competition could offer. I still pay more and more despite almost 15k miles covered without a claim during that time but at least it's not 1.5k
It's what they do - hope you won't bother to shop around. Not saying you didn't - sometimes it indeed don't work

@@pawel7196 For me the group 5 (small car, 75bhp) is ~£180 where as the group 17 (family car, 140bhp) is ~£400. It's not your cheaper cars that are the problems. It's that you might crash into a newer, more expensive modern car and your insurance company will be on the hook to cover any and all damages.
Given a continuing shortage of spare parts, the expense of rental vehicles and increasing labour costs, insurance companies are more likely than ever to write-off a vehicle, despite sustaining just minor damage. These is why auto insurance has increased substantially over the past few years.

If sales are dropping then it’s because new cars are stupid expensive and crap. Who in their right mind wants to spend tens of thousands on something the manufacturer considers a disposable, throw away item? There are very few new vehicles I would purchase. This will have a knock on to used vehicles and people will ultimately hang onto their older motors. There’s definitely less disposable income out there too.

Dash cam proof from myself, dash cam proof provided by a Biffa rubbish truck, 5 or so witnesses and even a full police report stating the other driver was at fault. Yet with all this evidence the other party are still trying to claim 50/50 if not try pin the entire thing on me. My insurance has more or less doubled since this, I've lost 6 out of my 10 years no claims.. for what? no fault of my own. I just find it stupid how someone can fight a situation like this with all this evidence against the other party. Been going on for the last 8 months now. Was insanely stressful finding a car down South West area that wasn't a total rip off or near death. This alone has made me want to just give up driving all together.

The lag effect of interest rate rises over the last year or so is only maybe now beginning to be felt in the wider economy and this trade, dealing with expensive items, is beginning to feel the chill. The caravan and motor caravan trade have been really hammered, with some big dealers going out of business. The uncertainty of a new Labour government doesn't help either. I'm old now and was in the trade for 30yrs and well remember the savage recession of the early 1980's, with 1981 being really grim. At that time franchised dealers were sending brand new unregistered cars to auction to be sold for whatever they could get for them, and our dealership sales dropped by 60 - 70 %., with many people losing their jobs.I certainly hope we're not heading down that path again.

I read that 70% of all cars on the road now are leased. Bearing that in mind, my mate has a pitch. He's 61 like me, been doing it all his life. His friend (not a dealer /mechanic) has worked all his life and has to have a hip replacement. His wife suggested he should apply for disability allowance as he will be off work for 6 months. They were also advised to apply for a disabled car allowance as someone else in the family can chauffeur him around during this period. His son, who is 21 and just passed his test can go on the insurance. They have just leased a brand new Skoda, with both of them on the insurance, for £71 per month. THAT'S LESS THAN £900 PER YEAR FOR A BRAND NEW CAR AND A DRIVER WHO IS 21 WITH NO PRIOR HISTORY. The insurance companies and car manufacturers are stitching everybody up, just like the mobile companies did, so that in Klaus Schwab's (WEF) words by 2030, 'YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND BE HAPPY'.

@fredflinstone1428 I would love to get a brand new car for only £71 per month including insurance for 2 drivers, but I think you will find its a lot more than that 😢. Currently Mobility vehicles cost a minimum of £75.75 per week which works out to £3,939 per year or £11,819 for the 3 year mobility vehicle lease term. You get nothing when you hand it back.
If anyone knows where I can lease a brand new car from including insurance for 2 drivers for £71 per month then please let me and everyone else know 😊

If he's been granted DLA he will be using the Motorbility scheme, which
means his weekly grant covers the cost of a new lease car, not any car,
the ones with lower spec that don't need an upfront payment. This includes
road tax and insurance for him and a named driver, and it will now be around
£71 per week, not monthly, and you certainly won't be paying for insurance,
      it's included.

Bought my 2007 Yaris 1.4 diesel 12 years ago when it was 5 years old. Just use it now to get the shopping. Never missed a beat. Passed every MOT first time. One set of new tyres, 2 batteries, 3 sets of windscreen wipers, yearly oil/filter changes and an AC condenser - and that's it. £35 a year road tax, £350 fully comp insurance. Doing 45 mpg - used to do 85 on holiday trips - no doubt it still would. It's a keeper. Should easily see me out. Why change?

This car pitch has such skinny margins that I can easily see them losing money after all costs. What it definitely isn’t is profiteering. That’s why Lee needs a dozen plus sales, month in, month out, to cover all costs and make a modest profit over the course of a year.
Most people will make much more take home by being employed by someone else, but some of us cannot bear being an employee. I stopped that in my 40s and was never employed again, except in companies I founded and mostly owned. I’m now retired in my mid 60s.

During the pandemic, I knew companies (various trades) were fraudulently claiming furlough but still working cash in hand knowing the Govt would never investigate. These people were coining it in with free income from the taxpayer.
It's an open secret that all Govt contracts/initiatives have a financial "tolerance" built into them. E.g. Green Energy scheme c.2014 - many contractors weren't completing the work (lagging, cavity wall insulation) but still claiming the costs from the Govt. Govt/civil service can't monitor that so they accept abuse of the system and write off the cost. Not enough staff to investigate each historical case.

2nd hand car prices take the absolute pi$$. Everyone's keeping hold of what they have and running it into the ground.

You can blame the electric car brigade for higher insurance prices as when van ev gets back small amount of damage the industry is very quick to rite the car off because the battery may be compromised

Short of sales, but you might get a couple of hundred, and two spaces freed up if you pull out and scrap the 500 and Corsa 👌🏻

Interest rates on used are high and people are holding onto existing cars or plumping for dealer incentive pcp deals. Eventually interest rates will drop and things will get a bit more like they once were.

Interest rates are only at around the historical average. They can’t go down much - low interest rates are what got us in this mess!

True. It’s similar to houses though the average price has risen dramatically combining with a rate increase to become unaffordable. 4-5% on a big number hurts especially after over a decade of cheap credit

@@royfontaine5526They’ll have to, or no one is going to be buying cars on finance. People would rather hold on to what they have on a lower rate then PX for another vehicle on double or triple the APR.

During Covid the Mrs had her car written off - we paid 20 but insurance gave 25k but we still couldnt buy what we had (like for like) so we ended up getting an older car , however at the time i did spot a similar car to what we had but it was too much - that very same car is still for sale now 9k less now ! Greed.

Its not just cars , I visited a local sawmill on Friday my usual question '' how is business'' got the reply well business customers are still coming in but the general public sales have all but stopped it seems the new government has completely destroyed public confidence

I’m driving 19 plate Astra with 4 cylinder engine , reluctant to update . Most cars in my price range have changed to three cylinder wet belt engines , had one in DS3 and cost for replacement belt is ridiculous. Astra has 22000 miles with chain will run it into ground and put money into my pension.

I was on the look out for another car. I bought my current 2013 honda civic diesel in 2017 as Honda Approved car with 20k miles for £8.5K. today, a four year old civic with 20K and honda approved will now cost double that and more. I'll keep my 2013 civic now until it dies

It’s not been the best all year to be honest for car sales ( Cheshire also) and the recon is getting higher and higher with more and more vehicles having more issues too
Got to keep at it haven’t we 👌

I'd suggest that interest rates are kicking in as people re-mortgage and retail regardless of what always tends to go quiet around August.

Id rather spend money repairing my cars bought pre-covid then chance buying a slighlty (very slightly) newer vehicle for thousands more.

Prices now for used cars are ridiculous. I bought a 2016 Vw Tiguan in 2020 with 25k for £11500 now looking on autotrader the same model with similar mileage is about £15k. As people have said, the poxy insurance companies are taking the piss, when i first got it my premium was £300 but has doubled since then even though im 52 with 15 years no claims, cheapest i could find this year was £650. Mine has now done 200k miles so have been looking for a vehicle before it packs up. I can do over 1000 miles a week working on the mobile telecom sites and need something with a modicum of offroad capability to get to remote sites so even been looking at the Dacia duster vans 😅 even they're expensive now.
