My vertical 102" 10 gauge copper wire antenna is held up by a rope tied to 2 trees 40 feet high similar to your PVC setup but mine has four 14 gauge copper radials sloped at 40 degrees. I can regularly chat with a few distant CBers on CH 38 barefoot about 50+ miles away.
A 102" stainless whip is nothing more than a quarter wave antenna when it's working against a proper ground plane. It has unity gain. The highest gain vertical for CB use is the Sigma 4 design, it is a full 3/4 wave and will offer a solid 3 db or one half S unit over a quarter wave. Doesn't sound like much but you have to double your power on the quarter wave to equal it.
How long were your copper wires? And how well does it perform without the linear?

That's pretty awesome. A few dollars in materials and some sweat equity beats most high end antennas.You might consider building the next one out of 8 gauge wire just to see if there's any benefit. Thanks for sharing.

I've made a quarter wave antenna but I can't get the ground plane wires right i end up with 60w on channel 1 and slowly goes up through the channels to 100w.

Now you have to do some DXing ! I built many a 1/4 wave Copper Tubing CB antennas & they all worked great but never thought about using pvc to reinforce the soft copper. Are you using copper wire inside the pvc? 1/2 wave?

Had a Jo Gunn 4v on a 30' tower with about 1200 watts @ 26.935 and talked from central Indiana over the west coast to australia for about 15 min.
Used to do that every night during the late 1980s running a President HR 2510, 150 W Cobra 150 Amp into a 96" Francis Amazer on the back of my Hyundai Excel.

Yes, the 102 whip had 2 stainless steel 102" long ground plane wires. and the homemade had 2 12g solid copper 102" long ground plane wires.

Thank you so much for this video. I've been doing tons of studies on antennas lately and your test was an eye opener. Up to this point I had considered antenna design and feedline as points for loss, but had not even thought about the actual conductor used being a loss factor in the design. Seeing the installation I can see the dilemna why you are restricted to using 2 radials, but would be very interesting to see how 4 radials would improve the range. Another thought is have you considered changing the two existing stainless steel ground wires over to copper as well? I suspect this alone without adding two additional ground radials could possibly increase the efficiency slightly more?
I may have misread the description...are the ground radials already copper? Sorry if I misunderstood.
the stainless steel whip has SS ground plane wires, and the Homemade antenna has copper ground plane wires. In the future I will try the SS whip with copper radials, just to see if it makes a difference.
Propergation changes can occure over a few minutes and effect signal strenth significantly . IF you live in a extended rural area the noise level my not be a problem but in Urban areas is often a S-7 +. At legal power , cb in my city is often limited to a mile because of power line noise .

Although the swr readings are within acceptable rage for both antennas. I wonder, if the actual resonant length of the pvc antenna (which would have a better swr reading) made the difference in the range of transmit vs. the material the antenna was made of. Great video. I have been messing with c.b. radios for around 25 yes. I have copied a few antenna designs, and like you I always think ... But what if that antenna works better? My question to you is ... For a 102" steel whip , antenna only... How can there be a difference , and the fluctuation of the price for what looks like the same thing !! ???? Is one better than the other in a steel whip ???
I need some help. Due to HOA I can only put up a vertical dipole using two 102" whips out of my second floor balcony two feet out ( it is a three stories townhouse). I know this is not ideal but that all I could so. My question is I have very high SWR. Being a dipole I did not ground the antenna, the hot goes to the up whip and the ground from coax goes to the down whip. I did not add the 4" heavy duty spring that is normally used with 102" whip. Any idea how I might improve the SWR?
try moving it out a little more, it should be 3 feet or more from the building.

Great stuff as usual. just an observation, I noticed there is a bit of distortion on AM on the Washington. Someone may have removed TR23 (2sc945) which is the AM only modulation limiter.
I'm not sure why, But it only sounds like that when My Wife uses it. When I use My Washington, it is clear on SSB and AM. I'm going to setup a ceramic mic for Her to try. Thanks for watching, Take care.
1/4 wave antenna is great for skip. Need a 5/8ths wave GP for local!

Best ground plane for omni gain is the. .64 wave. The vertical element is about 22 feet long! 3 or 4 ground radials.
Check out the Sigma4 design. They are no longer made by the Avanti company, but the Italian company Sirio makes a clone that works as well. 27 ft tall radiator gamma fed at the base with a halo at the bottom. It's a full 3/4 wave antenna that just flat out performs.

I'm totally lost about base station antennas. I've always had mobile radios and used magnet mounts. They have always worked great for me. But I got a bunch of local guys on bases around here and i can't hear some of them well or reach some of them. They are great guys and I'm so glad I have so many locals still using CB. But I need a base station so i can reach them all. On my mobile sometimes I can talk to one of them almost 20 miles away but it has to be a quiet day with no skip coming in or noise. Other days they can't hear me at all and I barely hear them. The closest guy is about 10 miles away and we can talk clearly all the time. So I don't really need power....i need a base antenna
I'm running a galaxy 959 thats peaked and tuned and does 32w pep and 14w bird average. It talks 20 miles on a good clear and quiet day so I got enough power for now.
So here's my plan and tell me what you all think. I want my radio in the metal barn I have. My shop. It's about 40 foot long and all metal. I'm thinking about buying a quad magnet ( 4 magnets) and putting a 102 whip on it. Stick it on metal barn roof and see how it works. It should act as a ground plane like the roof of my truck does. Do you think it will work ok?? It should be a HUGE improvement over my Mobil truck antenna which is a little Wilson. I just don't understand how to make a normal base antenna work. I suck at electrical wiring ext.

You need more radials. The signal is going to focus on the direction of the radials.
It all goes back to the old adage, the more metal you got up the the better it will work!! An antenna made of copper pipe would work even better! (you would have to coat it to keep the corrosion down.
Radials are everything, assuming the whip had none, and the wire had 2,,,,,,,,,THATS why the wire antenna, performed better,,,,cool vid,,,add more radials, and the performance will increase,,,,de NV1H😎
On the 102 build what type of wire did you use for the two ground planes and how long are they I'd like to build one

How would this work for a police scanner. I mainly listen to law enforcement, fire, medical, and air traffic. In my area we have no trunked systems worth listening to so all my frequencies are in the 100-480 range

Add more ground plane radials, if you can add another 1 or 2 radials it’ll improve your local reception.
You can also change the feedpoint impedance by changing the angle the radials run. Sloping them makes the antenna closer to 50 ohms but it gives less low angle radiation for DX. Running them flat at 90 degrees makes it DX a little better, but you will need a matching network to correct the impedance mispatch, the antenna will be somewhere around 27 ohms.

awesome bro so relaxing to watch you and your .5 on here happy TXing kh348 New Zealand plus i also have my homemade full wave on the tree i have a rope hanging from the tree the tree stands about 70ish feet tall and i use the rope to hoist the aerial up and lower it down when high winds hit plus easy maintenance it works for me try it give it a go and see if does good for you

@@MowerJunkie I finished the antenna today! At first when I hooked it up there was nothing coming through the radio even with the volume all the way up. I then realized that the antenna needed a ground plane after watching one of your videos. I have grounded the antenna and will test it soon. 1220 northern indiana.

I’m wanting to try a 102 inch hollow copper water pipe , and some ground radials . Possibly at the bottom, use a short piece of pvc pipe to isolate it from the antenna mast . Have you ever experimented with that setup ?

I keep making one like yours, but when I put it vertically its SWR is crappy. I have the bottom of it sitting on the ground, and the antenna part in the air at 16 ft. Does it need to be in the air higher to get the SWR down, or should I add a ground wire to bond it?
Needs to go up free of ground 9 to 15 ft for good testing 9 because is quarterwave separation from earth

@@troydhansen4990 have you been using RG 59 for match I'll look up length but a piece 75 ohm cable and then the 50 ohm feed line usually brings down
the angle and number of the ground plane radials can change your swr reading too.
The ground plane radials should be connected as close as possible to the feed point of the antenna. I usually connect My radials directly to the antenna mount.

But um , sir , what kind of trouble do you have with lightning ? Because I took notice , you didn’t ground it .
The White PVC pipe you used is not the best RF transparent you can get. If you had used gray PVC for electrical conduit, it would be more transparent. Simple test can be done. Chop equal pieces of both and place each one by itself in your microwave oven and operate for 60 seconds. Measure the temperature of both and the cooler one is RF transparent. SWR and range will be better for the most transparent one used.

I paused the video to watch this. Somehow I think the thinner, copper will radiate the signal better than the steel. An actual wire never seems to straighten out completely no matter how much tension I might put on it, there always is a wave to it, and I've wondered if this could distort a signal. The steel whip, being thicker, will be straighter along the length. I know nothing about the physics of an antenna, however I always wondered if straightness was at least one factor. I be interested to see a comparison of the same dimension aerial, one copper and one steel.
I use 12g solid copper wire, and it's pretty rigid. a little bit a wave in the wire won't affect the function of the antenna. Thanks for watching. 73's from 151 SC.

Awesome video. Built a similar antenna to yours, and have spoke worldwide on it. Is there a link to your antenna build so I can get my swr a tad lower? It's sitting pretty damn low now. yes, I did use the same ground plane wires with both antennas. the best way I've found to adjust the SWR with this type of antenna, is to adjust the angle of the ground radials. they can be between 30-45 degrees. sometimes 30 works best, sometimes 45 works best. give it a try, it could work for you too. Do I need the pvc or can I just run copper wire?
The PVC is needed to keep the center element upright. the wire will just fall over without something holding it.
You could run the copper up a tree or a flag pole if you have one, it doesnt have to be PVC...
Be inventive and use your imagination.
Is there an on line calculator i can use to figure this info out?
468 ÷ frequency in MHz. Will give you overall length.
So for 27.2 MHz (the middle of the band) it would be:
468÷27.2= 17.2 feet, or 206.4 inches. That's about 103.2 inches per side.
It's always best to start out a little higher and trim as necessary. And adding a choke coil is very highly recommended. 5-8 wraps of coax at the feed point, around a 4" piece of PVC is good for 27 MHz.

How did your build go?
Get a 49:1 balun and rig up a 1/2 wave vertical with wire (or pipe and whip)...bet it will beat out both of those.
Why not use a 1:1 balun?
The EFHW antenna (end fed half wave) has a 2500 ohm impedance. A 49:1 balun allows it to match the 50 ohm load requirement of the radio. Without the balun, the SWR mismatch could damage the radio.

Thanks Anthony. I used 3 pieces of 12g solid copper wire. all 3 wires are 102.33" long. the 2 ground planes are clamped to the outer ring of the coax connector. and the 3rd wire is connected to the center conductor of the coax. Good luck with Your antenna build. 73's from 151 SC.

I have no interest in DXing but...
I use a 20ft piece of PVC pipe and Ive wound 36ft of copper wire left over from my home rewire. (like a firestik) Works great out to around 20 miles. SWR 1.2, 20ft in the air.
I also use a 36ft copper wire dipole strung down the garden just higher than the washing line.. Works better than expected but only in 2 directions. SWR 1.5
When the summer comes I may take the dipole down and use the wire to make another pipe Firestik and use it as a ground plane for the me made Firestik and see how that works.
From my experience.... Homemade is always better.
I agree, Homemade antennas are more fun, and have a strange satisfaction when they work well.
I recently tried a fiberglass whip, maybe 2.5 feet long, with an 8ft something copper wire to make it a dipole, vertical. Attic mounted.
I had a contact 35 miles away over mountains. Just 4 watts.
Are you using the 36 ft of copper wire on 27mhz? If so, something unusual is going on because a full wavelength antenna doesn't radiate. It will only warm up - depending on how much rf energy you pump into it..

to be fair rerun the test without the black box and test the swrs with the base radio! the antenna might have a perfict match with one radio but different on another
I put the SWR meter in line with the Washington too. With just the radio, the SWR was the same as it was with the Realistic. the 102" whip with the box on has an SWR of 1.3 to 1, and the Homemade with the box on is just under 1.2 to 1. I used the Realistic to test the Homemade antenna, just so if the antenna had an issue, the Realistic would take the beating instead of breaking My Washington. It's not bad sounding at all, just not very loud.
Stainless steel is 40 times more resistive than copper. This alone can be seen when doing side by side antenna gain tests.
Not exactly a fair fight.. 1:2 against flat and SS against copper. I'd like to see a homemade silver antenna against copper fight !!

@@MowerJunkie I've thought about it . You can get serling silver which is 92% silver and 8% copper at 16 guage wire for 5.70 a foot. A half wave (18ft) would run 102 bucks.A 1/4 wave for 51.

Put your 102 in still whip on top of your Antron 99 cut it 2 length of the normal length of the top of the antenna of a Antron 99 and see how good you get out then
No need to cut anything, use the rings for fine tuning. If I'm not mistaken it puts it closer to the "I-max" that is "5/8s wave {insead of 1/2}and more broad banded. the only downside is when ice forms it can cause heavy strain on the middle.
I have been in the radio hobby for over 45 years. I've tried every vertical made for CB. Nothing touches the Sigma4 or the clones made today. They are a full 27 ft tall and fed at the base with a gamma match and they have a strange inverted halo at the bottom....but they kick ass! I guarantee you, they out talk and hear any other 5/8 or fiberglass antenna in the CB world. Next best are the Sigma 5/8 clones or the Hygain Penetrator clones. But they have radials, the Sigma 4 clones do not, much easier to put up.

I have been a CB pirate for 30 years and the best setup I had was a 2 element beam with a 5/8s "I-max on top 10 feet that said couldn't be done{no standing wave problems} 30 feet at the bottom element 3 years before a storm got it. {"The Wanderer" 113} Central NC. not too far from "Elkin" if u know anything about that. Rock on!
Its all about the angle of radiation..... For local talk you want to keep your signal closer to the ground but for Skip you want it to point up. This is why a horizontal dipole works very well for long distance contacts as the signal is pointed straight up bouncing off the ground. This is also why the type of soil you have plays a big part. run some ground radials into the water if you are by a lake or ocean and see what happens. muahahahahha.
This is why I use ground plane antennas. At 3/4 of a wave length up in the air they have an interesting wave pattern. it looks like a doughnut on top of a doughnut. So it will do just as well for skip, as it will for local. Thanks for watching, Take care.
Lucky you can even talk a mile away with CB. HAM or GMRS is far superior.
funny, I have talked all over the world on a cb. cb is HF, most hams use hf. 10 meters is just above the cb band. Which is a ham band.
GRMS relies on repeaters to get any distance. If your not using a repeater its line of sight, which is way worse than CB.
@@burnstudios Oh really??? Most mobile GMRS radios are 10 to 50 watts power. In full duplex mode a ham radio will out talk a CB all day long stop trying to kid yourself. What's a CB maybe 5 to 7 watts if you're lucky. I had CB's when I was a kid back in early 70's yes if your lucky you might hit out of state or out side US contact. Hams can do this all day without luck or a Amp driving the CB at a 1000 watts.
@@bikernut1969 You have no idea how this works. Do you know what Sporadic E is? And how it works? When conditions are right you can work the world on a few watts. And most hams ( on HF )are running legal limit when they are transmitting.Which is 1.5kw. in the 90s when the solar cycle was at its peak. I worked all around the world with 20 watts and a 2 element quad antenna at 60ft. And no, hams cant do it everyday. If the sun spots are low that means the ionosphere is not charged, which means no DX. You might be able to talk local DX on 40 meters and 80 meters at night. But right now 20 meters, 17 and 15 are pretty dead because of the low sunspot cycle. And like I said before. GRMS is vhf and uhf which is all line of sight. Which is why they use repeaters. Anything else? Ive been radioing for 35 years. I had my ticket in the 90s, but got married had a kid and let it lapse. I am in the process of studying to get my general class ticket.
you can talk distance with GRMS, but you have to have height to do it. If you are on a handheld with a rubber duck, your not talking very far unless you use a repeater. Now if your in the house on a base station with an omni antenna or a beam, you can talk some distance. But you are not going to work around the world like you can on HF. I once took a 10 element yagi up into the Lake Placid Tower here in Lake Placid Florida, which is about 400 feet. I talked from Lake Placid to Jacksonville fla on 1/4 watt to another ham who had dual 13 element yagis pointed right at me. The distance was right about 400 miles this was all done on 2 meters.
But to say you cant work around the world on a cb, is pure ignorance.
@@burnstudios ok you stick with your CB then. Why do you think the FCC opened up FM to CB? Because the manufacturers were going tits up and out of business. Keep your CB stuff I'll stick with Ham and GMRS...
