I Love This Song! It was the first song my Scottish Grandfather played for me on the pipes when I was a wee lassie. I knew it was about two soldiers, but as a little girl, I pictured a young lad and his lassie being separated by their families. I probably got that notion from my English Grandmother who would read Shakespeare to me, and I always somehow connected it to Romeo and Juliet.
Several years ago, I was fortunate to visit Scotland, and Loch Lomond one of the places I went to. I had a boat ride on the loch and fish and chips at a restaurant on the shore. It's a beautiful place, and I'd love to visit it again.
My son, Scott, was there just last month for the first time. His mother, English, and I, American, met near Loch Lomond some 32 years ago, hence, our son's name.
Loch Lomond is breathtakingly beautiful. The captivating scenery and landscapes of Scotland are beyond words. Thank you for sharing this, Robert 🙏🏻🏴
Thanks Robert. I remember my mom singing this song when I was young aling with Waltzing Matilda. Its nice to see video of the Lock the song is about. It's s gorgeous place that I would never get to see if it weren't for your channel. I'm forever grateful. N
I used to have a chord-organ, as a kid, and this was one of the songs I played relatively well. 😂😂 Thank you for this entertaining look at the loch behind the song.
I so enjoy your videos. Scotland has always been a place I’ve wanted to go see. After Graeme pointed me in the direction of your channel, it has become more so. Maybe you could make a pdf map of places you’ve talked about? I could then use it as a guide book. Better yet, if you had an interactive map/app with map and locations, then if you clicked on a location it’d take you to a video you’ve produced on said locality.
Holy cow! Thank you for the link! I had never heard Runrig before...powerful singing, the music rocks..😊😊😊 I gotta look up more from them...wow! They just might be one of my new favorite groups.
Now I feel old. I associate the song with The Corries, a Scottish folk duo. I didn’t even know that Runrig did a version. I went to a Runrig gig many years ago, but don’t remember them singing Loch Lomond. Must listen to it.
It's the first Scottish song I know from the TV series Outlander. As a Chinese I have never been to Scotland, but the beautiful song has brought me to the highland, and showed me the rich history behind it.
I was born and raised in Loch Lomond, but the one in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Gaelic was our original language and we loved our Scottish heritage. Our family landed in NS while fleeing from one of Scotland’s battles, I’m not sure which one, but that was the tale my grandmother told me of how my Loch Lomond got its name. This song still rings proudly with us, as does our beloved Scottish bond.
Beautiful!! I've heard and used to know all the words and would sing it!! Hmmm, I'll have to Google it just to hear it again (I'd forgotten that one)!!! Thanks 😊 ❤
As an Australian with Scottish ancestry ( great grandfather came to Aus after WW1 for a warmer climate to help his scarred lungs ) I'm digging the wallabies finding their way there & thriving . 🏴🇦🇺
Our guide told us: During war between England and Scotland, the English captured some Scottish prisoners. They were paired between brothers, cousins, in-laws, so on. They were told that one will be executed and one will be set free to go home. The song is sung by the one who decided to be executed. I simply cried.
The song has always been to me, about two lovers leavening the lake, moving away, and it's a clever play on words, because the singer, while he loves his lover, his true love is the lake, which he will never see again.
I came across the song due to this other famous Lomond and I loved it. So sad and beautiful. I have my favorite interpretation I listened to today and that's probably why yt have just recommended this video to me. This other Lomond - actor Britt Lomond was proud of the country of his ancestors and around shooting Zorro TV series expressed his wish to visit it someday. I wonder if he made his wish come true, he had a long life so he probably managed. That's one of things I wanted to read about in his memoirs, but he was so focused on writing about others he forgot to write more about himself. Maybe that was his Scottish humbleness. Too bad. I enjoyed the video. The lake is beautiful I wish to visit it one day and listen to the song on its bonnie banks. Next life maybe 👻🌴🎼🌄🌞😎
what a place... what a song... just wondered wondered if the swiss lake of "Lac Léman" has the same name origins. Dr. Google says Léman originates from the celtic for "great water". not the same as for Lomond... but at least it's borth of celtic origins ;-)
My understanding was always, in a simple format.... no matter what, I'll die before you and take the "low lands" (I'm dead and will be buried in scotland) and you'll live on in the "Highlands" (compared to me, underground) and I'll meet you here (as in, come home to scotland and die here, and we'll be reunited)... am I the only one that has taken this message?
My clan is from Loch Lomond, as kids in the 70's we'd sing this song then immediately go straight into.... Ye canny shove yer grannie aff a bus. Miss my gran from Glasgow. COLQUHOUN - MOTTO - SI JE PUIS - IF I CAN. Have you found any of my ancestors at the bottom of the Loch, will have been down there a few hundred years?.😂🤣

Ah. That’s an interesting take on it as well!
Loch Lomond is beautiful, as is all of Scotland. Thank you for showing us its beauty.
This song calls my Scottish heart every single time I hear it. Even though I never got to meet you I love you Grammie Mac.

Thank you! The camera can’t capture what it looked like at sunset! 🙂
My Da sang this to me . Thank you for this memory. ❤️✌️🏴

Ah. What’s the meaning behind Waltzing Matilda? 🤔
@@scotlandunplugged I know what a Matilda is but not the real meaning behind slow. Maybe you could let us know,,, please
Thank you. I've got fond memories of the loch.
Beautiful place.
I love that song! It was one of the first songs we were taught in school and always sang! Thanks. ❤❤
This was a great story! I am an old music teacher and love learning the history of the song lyrics. Love this channel. 💜
Thank you!
Beautiful!
Its so beautiful there. Thanks for sharing about the song & the beautiful lake.

Thank you 😊
What a beautiful place, Robert. Thank you for sharing. 🙂❤️
Very good Bob. I had no idea of the meaning of the song - like most people I imagine. Very interesting.
Cheers! You still across the pond?

That’s a good idea!
Thanks for teaching us the meaning of the two roads.
As I watch your video I am looking at Ben Lomond Peak here across the pond. No Lochs here to compliment the view. Fall colors splash it's sides.
Ah. I didn’t know there was another one.
Yet another entertaining educational video. Thanks for "learnifying" us. Can't wait for the next one.
Thank you!
Stunning scenery. Excellent filming! thank you!
Thank you!
Loved the scenery! Missed your videos… glad your back 👏🏻💙
Thank you
Cool! I had no idea there was so much history and legend in that song. Thanks!
It’s a funny song. I was never sure what it meant. Just that there was death involved 😂
Another bucket list item! Ooooh it’s getting longer, hope I live forever 😂
Worth a try 😂
@Emma -Jayne just be aware, this Loch is one of many, just as beautiful across BONNIE SCOTLAND 👍🏴👍🏴🏴
Made me smile, as always.
Thanks Robbie for another great video.
Thanks Cameron!
Absolutely Stunning 😍 Robert 👍 ❤
I was just there 3 weeks ago. They explained the meaning and it touched my heart. Hearing it sung by soccer fans in a pub made me tear up.
Holy cow! Thank you for the link! I had never heard Runrig before...powerful singing, the music rocks..😊😊😊 I gotta look up more from them...wow! They just might be one of my new favorite groups.
They were pretty big here. 🙂

Beautiful..makes us proud of our wee country 🏴.. i do love Runrig❤... was hoping you were going to sing for us Mr Parker 🎶🎤😂😂
Haha. No one needs to hear that!

Thank You! Awesome History and Culture. ~ Be Safe out there folks ~ Peace & Health to Us All.
Thank you for this lovely reminder of the beauty of Scotland!
Such beauty. Thank you for the history. You tell it so well.❤❤❤
Beautiful!! I've heard and used to know all the words and would sing it!! Hmmm, I'll have to Google it just to hear it again (I'd forgotten that one)!!! Thanks 😊 ❤
Indeed gorgeous and I want to visit Loch Lomond now! But I have to ask, how is the fishing when one visits Loch Lomond?
Sent here by the hoof gp, can't wait to hear all the history lessons 😉
Last song at my wedding. We thought the floor was going to collapse with the bouncing...:)
As an Australian with Scottish ancestry ( great grandfather came to Aus after WW1 for a warmer climate to help his scarred lungs ) I'm digging the wallabies finding their way there & thriving . 🏴🇦🇺
My Scots/Irish American grandmother would sing this to me whenever I asked too many questions about anything lol. Granny Gillespie
Always an interesting tale behind the songs and legends. 😊❤️
The first version I've heard the song is done by a Brazilian singer.
The first I've heard of the lake was because of the whisky Loch Lomond.
Thank you Robert. Stunning scenery! ❤️🇦🇺🏴

Its funny because one of my favorite sounding songs for as long as I can remember is also "Shenandoah" a song about a river.
The song has always been to me, about two lovers leavening the lake, moving away, and it's a clever play on words, because the singer, while he loves his lover, his true love is the lake, which he will never see again.
I belong to clan McFarland and we’re from Loch Lomond
You had me at "nasty medical complaint", but then...wallabies! What a good day this is turning into. :)

I was there 2 weeks ago. I love bonnie Scorland
👍😎🇺🇸 ! Who stepped on the cat ?
He never sang the song, so
It was me ?
Beautiful, thank you
Nasty medical complaint 🤣🤣
An ungodly dose of the trossachs 😂
This song was written by Captain James MacGregor of Glen Endrick, who was jailed along with a friend in Carlisle England in 1746.

The version of the song, I like more is sing by Ella Roberts. She is a very beautiful singer.
I am descendent of the Munro's.
I live here ❤

Thehigh road is the gallows..no? . There is no 'high' road around The loch
