Would you recommend mass loaded vinyl layer between the two drywall panels
I've been to a company that truly soundproofs. Build one side of the wall. then insulated and wire the fixtures. Then install studs for the other side and install the other side of sheetrock. The two sides do not share the same studs which transfer noise. The studs can not touch the other wall so they stand off the top and bottom plate just about 1/4 inch.
That technique would be illegal in this situation because it would have blocked the entry to the room, making the doorway too narrow for a bedroom and violate code. This is a narrow room. If you do have the room you can build a partition wall with an air gap. That technique was employed on the first floor of the home. To save space I build 2x3 walls. I'm working in high density spaces but you can go wider if you have the room.
Hi I’m a little confused. These double drywall sheets come already in 2s preglued. So when you’re saying you’re doubling up, you mean you have 2 and then you’re putting another 2 on top or you’re just referring to the ones that are already double?
Hi Adrian, we install a sheet of 5/8” drywall then a sheet of Soundproofing drywall over it. So that’s two sheets of drywall total. For smaller budgets we also layer two sheets of 5/8” which is required by code. Hope that helps! Thanks for the question.
@@DaruDhillon do you think the STC improves with 5/8" quietrock first and then 5/8" type X on top of that?
Doing this type of soundproofing, is expensive but, it works if (IF) installation is done carefully. I presume you treated the ceiling and floor? Only doing one wall helps but, not a lot.
The IF is important and crucial. Installation is everything. I soundproofed the ceiling and joist cavities and the difference was incredible. However the material is expensive and I would want to oversee that type of installation. This was done on a semi with a shared “party wall”.
@@DaruDhillon Nice! Got any sisters in the trades? I'm willing to relocate. lol
Could this be used, and be effective, in an apartment setuo where im trying to block as much sound coming from my neighbor as possible? My plan was to just slap the drywal up against the wall and then seal with acoustic caulking. Not optimal but if it helps a bit to keep out low bass sounds it would be worth it. Also though about putting weathering stripping arojnd the edges of the drywall as a sort of non permanent decoupler so theres at least some air gap. Figured it would be better than just attaching it straight to the wall and given actual construction is out of the question.
I've gone through 6 videos, and literally none of them show how to do this starting from the first layer. These videos at best are a display of someone's ability, while given academic information. Clicking the like button, for taking the time to film this....but this wasn't even REMOTELY close to a "step-by-step" video...
Thanks for your feedback. I’d definitely shoot this differently today. Appreciate your comments and agree. This is one of my first videos.
Nice video, thank you. From what I've read you should use fine thread screws to screw into resilient channel, never coarse thread as the video calls for. Was this a mistake, or do you have a different take on which to use?
Thanks for watching Paul. I used a course thread or Type W screws because my studs are wood. If I were using steel studs, I’d switch to fine or Type S screws. This is following the installation specs for Bailey RC. I would check your manufacturer’s requirements before installation and follow their guidelines. 👍🏽
@@DaruDhillon Yes, Type W for RC-to-wood framing connection. But for the RC-to-drywall connection you use Type S screws, right?
She don’t know.
Is there anyway to build off this wall with the resilient channel? Like floating shelves or something?
Usually with a soundproof wall we try to limit penetrations but it’s structurally hold anything a typical wall would.
How is spray foam?
I like it to maximize the R-value of older homes. When used in attics and ceilings it keeps homes significantly cooler in the humid summer months. The downside is the off-gassing which I’m sensitive to. I’ll stay out a home a few days after it’s been sprayed. The required time is usually 24 hours. I’m keen on more sustainable insulation but it works really well. Thanks for the question Patrick. 👍🏽
where can i buy this product i live in Ontario Canada .Does Lowes or Home Depot carries it? Thank you
Your local drywall suppliers should carry it. I don't think Lowes or Home Depot have it in stock. There are several in the GTA. Thanks for watching Oanh DANG!
Lowe’s has it. It’s expensive as hell, but it’s the best
Thanks Jose!
Can this be installed over a plaster party wall? My new neighbors are very noisy! Thanks!
Yes, it can be applied over drywall or plaster. The fewer cutouts or holes in it the better. I can relate to having noisy neighbors, this was a huge improvement, provided it’s installed correctly. Good luck with your soundproofing Edward.
@@DaruDhillon Thanks for replying on Christmas! Should those metal studs be installed to make an air gap, or can it be screwed right into the existing studs behind the plaster?
I prefer using resilient channel to decouple the drywall from the studs. It is also in the building code here for multi-unit housing.
How much would it cost to do a 120 sq ft. bedroom with 8' ceiling?
The drywall sheets are $100 each for the QuietRock, 5/8" is inexpensive. I'm not sure what the labor cost would be in your area but a drywaller should be able to give you a ballpark price over the phone. Hope that helps.
What is the sound attenuation in DB. what frequency range it dampens? I doubt if it works for low frequencies below 100 Hz.
Typical drywall over wood studs achieve an STC rating of 30-40 with QuietRock you can achieve an STC of 70. We use this product in home theatres with 100 dB+ the adjacent room will be as quiet as a library, 40 dB. For full laboratory results you can refer to their website. Homeowners, like myself aren’t going to pay $100 a sheet unless the results are outstanding! Proper installation is paramount to achieving this result.
How does it work when you have existing outlets and window sills, how do you adjust that?
For existing outlets I’d wrap all electrical boxes with acoustical putty. It’s an essential component. We are usually soundproofing interior walls so windows aren’t a factor for us. Acoustical caulking would also be used on all joints and seams. You could do drywall returns around windows and sills.
You're a cutie!
Daru I am from India, here I have seen people using egg shells foam
do they sell this product in Idaho? Also whos the hot chick at the end of the video??
that video skipped over too much. bad camera movement too.
What information were you hoping to see?
You are incredibly attractive.
That’s awesome! Can you please tell us how to do it with the living room roof to second floor ? Advance thanks 👍
For multi-unit homes or suites we have to make sure ceilings are fire-rated for safety. That would include Resilient channel, fire-rated insulation and 5/8”Type X drywall. It’s best to consult your local building code to see what is required in your area. Thanks!
What's the purple foam?
Hi William, that’s spray foam insulation.
Hi I hear my neighbors subwoofer coming through the party wall. Will this help with that?
Hi Ankit, low frequency soundproofing is the most challenging to address. It can be improved by decoupling and by adding mass. For low frequency sound I wouldn’t invest in QuietRock. Whatever product you choose see how it performs in the 100-150 Hz low-frequency range. I’m in Canada. Here we have a product called Sonopan. It’s more cost effective and better with low frequency sound. I don’t know if that’s available in your area but you may have something similar? I hope you are able to find a good solution.
@@DaruDhillon I tried getting sonopan but they don’t have a distributor here unfortunately. I was thinking of adding the resilient channels, thick batt insulation, mlv, 5/8 inch dry wall. Seal everything with green glue.
earplugs, 59 cents
My earplug days are over, outside of work :)
if i double drywall for my whole house,it’s very heavy?
A sheet of 5/8” drywall weighs over 70 pounds. They are heavier than regular drywall 1/2”. I need a helper to carry them. 😅
