A regular problem with this red dot finder, is that once some users have changed the battery, they can not get the new one to work. This short video shows what may have caused the issue, followed hopefully by a solution.
OK this may not work for everyone and all situations, but costs nothing to try.
    Thank for watching.

For me the problem was in the knob that adjusted the intensity of the red dot. It had a loose connection. On pressing the knob tightly on its side, it worked. Hope this too helps.

Nice that you provide support... Wish I bought through you. I just got a 102 and turns out the focal knobs will NOT move my eyepiece in and out of main tube. Celestron's support, NOT GREAT, told me it was "stuck" and to back the screws off and "pull the tube apart." So I did that. No deal. Ever see those knobs not responding, and not sliding the eyepiece such that you can focus?

In my issues it was related to the on-off knob / intensity settings. A tiny Philips screw at the on/off knob needs to be readjusted after so many uses. I exhausted battery issues to no avail. Try in a dark space to observe if a red glow, it leads to premature battery failure . Switch failure due to screw tension has many variables.

You think that's bad? I can't even mount my finderscope because the base of it is missing 2 holes to mount it! Waiting to hear back from Celestron support for the Starsense Explorer LT 70AZ and why they gave us the wrong base inside the box for the finderscope.

I have added a thin disk of foam packing inside the battery cover. This presses the contact down on the battery to ensure a good connection. I feel that this is something they should include from the factory.

This was helpful but still didn't work for me. After looking at it and moving alignments around I noticed you can see into near where the potentiometer power switch is. So I cleaned it out by blowing into that to get any dust build up off the switch contact. I also wiped off the glass where the led is. After that I noticed the light flickering which was some sign of function. So I blew into it some more to get any further dust out and now it's working. Hope this helps.

Had some viewers contact us to imply the RDF in the video is not a Celestron one. This particular one was taken off a Celestron Astromaster 80 EQ MD . Yes this type of mass produced product, is re-branded in many brand names. But this one was definitely out a Celestron box. So yes, this video applies to many other same / similar RDFs.

Bottom line this finderscope is cheaply made. Already sent a message to Celestron to fix the problem. After spending what I did on this scope, there should be better quality. Total BS!!

I have noticed with the odd batch, Skywatcher have included a little more beefy RDF. Maybe they are trying out different ones. On the 2-3 occasions our customers have said the Celestron RDF wont work, I have tested and sent another out , no questions asked. Wishing you clear skies.

Celestron should be ashamed for putting these on their scopes… they are useless junk. The one that came on my scope failed after 2 days( not a battery issue) the replacement they sent didn’t work at all right out of the box( again… no a battery issue) finally the third one actually turns on and works…. But … can’t get it to align properly, not enough travel in the vertical adjustment 😖😖😖 the best fix is to take it off your scope and throw it in the garbage can!!! Going to adapt a green laser for a finder 👍👍

The switch. Try a little tap on the switch wheel. This finderscope is pretty awful. All is plastic. I have tried to change for other of metal. Even other brand, but I think is no to easy for the holes on the base. If anyone has the answer please let me know !. Thanks.

    • @tannerman46

There is one prong at the front and two at the back. Taking out the front prong is easy. Gently lift out the back prongs by lifting up the sides and the back. Reading/watching other sources of info led me to believe I just needed to force up the front, but that would have snapped the back prongs!

obviously very poorly designed battery lid.

    • @44messier
      @44messier  3 роки тому

From many years of selling and servicing telescope parts, it one of the best designs. Clips securely in place. The last thing you want is a cover that comes off too easy , drops off and gets lost. Its a much better design than the celestron starpointer Pro, which can be easy to strip the threads + the coin slot for unscrewing is easily damaged if care is not taken.

    • @PaulHummerman

@@44messier - fair enough. The problem is probably me -I only rarely need to change the battery so I forget how to do it nex ttime (and it looks, misleadingly, as though the cover should just flip up, but is being prevented by the dovetail behind it). Andt here's nothing in the Celestron manual.

My problem is that the battery keeps dying even when switched off. I'll replace it one night, turn it off and next day I need to replace it once again. I think the switch must be faulty, and doesn't properly break the circuit.

My battery is buried inside the plastic housing with no possible way to get it out without breaking the damn thing.
