- Train Driver VLOG - Smile and wave.
Todays train driver vlog looks at why train drivers don't always blow there horn at passers by. Your questions answered on the railway industry and working as a train driver. - Розваги
I was driving a company Citroen C1 back from Bradford towards Harrogate. There's a section of track that runs parallel to the road behind a loose line of trees that I didn't know was there until this happened. I'm driving and it's a beautiful day. I Looked over and saw a train and I was pacing the driver's cab. I had my window down he had his window pulled back. I saw this and fired off the pitiful horn of the C1. Driver looked a bit shocked, looked around, saw me pacing him then fired off a long two tone. We did the thumbs up after I calmed down a bit and I had a stupid grin on my face all day. The power of trains my guy!
Love your channel by the way.
Great story, I would probably have done the same ! Glad your enjoying the channel.
Lived by the railway for 30 years by the site of west marina station ( near the old west marina signal box site in bexhill road but never complained about the noise! watching the trains there always fascinated me seeing them waiting at the signal waiting to cross bo peep junction , watching the movements through the train wash etc , hopefully one day they might open west marina station once again!.
I must say that whilst I don’t wave or make the horn gesture it’s nice when a driver sounds the horn or depot whistle unprompted!
Wow this is an old video now Anthony - I think they have got better over time :-) it’s certainly nice when you get a little wave or a horn.
@@DadRail I’m making a point of trying to work through some of your older content as well as your recent stuff too 🙂
I think I made a driver double take recently.... Was standing at an AHB while cycling while one was approaching who gave me 2 tones (quite rightly) but before I had even quite realised I had gone into autopilot and had an arm in the air in acknowledgement.
I got the second blip so all good there, but would a driver think it odd if their horn was acknowledged by what at least appears to be a normal member of the public?
We live in Dawlish Devon and the driver's are normally good at beeping the horn then and the kids love it😁👍
Lovely part of the world! ua-cam.com/video/Euw-aq-A2Po/v-deo.html
Nice vid! I stopped doing the whistle guesture last year since I Learnt that it means something to do with braking! With the fact of me volunteering on railway sites near the main network or wearing hi vis just generally anywhere within/near the need of me wearing one. Still get a happy tone since I just smile and give the usual wave to the drivers. If they are in a clear area with no warning etc then I get a wave and if lucky a good old tone! Always nice to be able to chat with the drivers and feel part of the family since I am aiming for driving for my local TOC.
Besides anything else it just looks ridiculous.
@@NirateGoel well there's also that side of things I guess it does too
I'm trying to get driving my local TOC when I can too! - good luck!
I used to live very close to a busy railway line in the days of steam and the only time I noticed the trains was when I woke in the night when a regular goods didn't pass by because the drivers were on strike.
Awesome Video Once Again Richard! Keep It Up!
I believe the "whstle signal" on the railway is also the signal to apply brake preasure or something like that. I tend to just smile and wave and leave it up to the driver weather he waves, smiles, nods, blasts the horn off like mad, a small tone or all of them!
You are correct the whistle gesture that a lot of people do is the rule book hand signal for create a brake (charge / release the brake)
@@DadRail thought so! Of course this doesn't stop people from doing it but I guess some aren't educated with the hand signals but drivers know what they mean usually
Hi Richard. I have recently come across your channel and found the content in it fascinating. Keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Richard I follow all the station's with Geoff and Vicki they do it very well and I am subscribed to your channel
All the stations is Epic, But what will we watch once it is all finished? #allthestationseurope
Richard I agree with you especially they are in the north west a favourite area of mine
Thank you for answering my question I will share this video for yoy
also sounding the horn at train enthusiasts is a good excuse to test that the horn works
I wonder how the Americans feel. Horns are blown a lot more frequently in America than in the UK. People in the urban areas in the UK may be annoyed but I reckon Americans are ten times more annoyed! Also their horns are louder
Good video I am a railway enthusiast I found it vary interesting
I live with a train line in the garden and never had complaints with the trains, they just drown out and become sounds of normal life!
Yeah - we've been banned from blowing up at a footbridge just before Woking. I still use a 2 tone despite the ruling because of blind bends and our 159 horns are not as powerful as Disastros (Desiros) or Voyagers.
I think common sense goes a long way. We have a foot crossing called Pilgrims Way just before Otford Station. The whistle board has been removed and replaced so many times. The crossing is in the middle of the village, near the station on a blind bend. We now have a TSR on the crossing and no whistle board, but most drivers, myself included still blow up
I regularly go down to watch the meridians and hst’s fly past Bedford. Your right about that feeling of happiness when you wave and the drivers wave back. It must get a little lonely in the cabs for drivers. East Midlands train drivers are usually tone friendly lol!
I can't see the link to the modern rule book, so I have to ask about the new horn sounding restrictions.
How about when a station you are passing through is occupied by another train on an immediately adjacent running line? We were taught (a long time ago when I counted ex-steam drivers as colleagues) that it was required, just in case a railway colleague needed to cross the line in the course of their duties from behind the stationary train, and they might step into the path of yours.
Would you have been allowed to use the depot whistle
Best place to trainspot: Teynham
This is because there's a whistle board right outside the station for London bound trains so there's no need to do the horn gesture at all
Good point, but not much variety at Teynham?
@@DadRail only really services to the coast and London so mostly electrostars and javelins. But in the summer maybe an occasional Networker or ECS move to sittingbourne
I'm most certain I'm going to subscribe to you!!
Thank you
Is ammo adventures gone now? I tried putting 'Ammo and Friends' and 'Ammo Adventures' in the search but can't find it.
What station was it?
Nice video
Bloody public, I love it when a train blows its hooter and I’m 51 now !!! Living on the liverpool st / norwich line north of Diss
I thought Richard looked a bit younger and had got a new hairstyle! Then I checked the date of the video…
When playing TSW I often enter stations where passengers are past the line they shouldn’t be on, usually the yellow tiles or the marker which passengers should not be. I sound my horn then. Fair use?
Yep that is fair usage
The question I have got as a railway enthusiast my favourite train is 158 820 do you as a driver you have a particular train that you like driving
Mine is 180102 (you know what I mean).
what is the circumstances of using a high, low and two toned (high/low) horn?
Generally speaking, low tone is to be used at whistle boards & whilst shunting. High tone is reserved for special codes such as train in distress & 2 tones is a warning if you see anybody on the track
Give us a toot on the horn if u go by west marina adjacent to tk maxx!
I go past there regulaly :-)
So what job opportunities are available for 18 years olds? I heard you mention depot shunter. What does that involve?
A shunter controls the movement of trains, engines, wagons etc around a depot, he collaborates with drivers, signallers, other shunters and supervisors to ensure the safe movement of trains, it’s a responsible job that can be a great introduction to driving and the railways. Some yards use depot drivers/shunter drivers who are like part qualified drivers and they select their trainee drivers from amongst the depot drivers.
you could sound the deport whistle
Could and often do. Trouble is some of the depot whistles are not all that good and are very quite. Depends on the unit as well, some of the older stock are not fitted with depot whistles.
Which is higher in rank-- a conductor, or an engineer? And what are the differences? Thank you.
In the UK, a conductor would be the person who collects tickets and ensures the wellbeing of passengers. An Engineer would be the person who works at the depot repairing trains and locomotives
I'm confused about something. You said if people were on the 'wrong' side of the fence they'd get more than just a horn blowing. What does that mean? Is there some kind of exhaust that comes out of one or the other side of the train? Can you please clarify this for me?
That would be a useful feature :-) They would also get reported!
They would get their collar felt by British Transport Police....
Well unles they are in possession of a valid sentinel card, SWP and correct PPE
Some time I Will have to do a vlog , the problem is knowing what to talk about that might increase the subscribers
Go For it, Just be yourself and talk about whatever you are interested in.
Could you just use the depot horn?
where fitted yes
Why not use the depot whistle
Depends on the type of train you are driving, as they are not all fitted with depot whistle, but as a rule if it is fitted then I normally will.
As you were talking about West St Leonards I assumed you were driving a 375, which does :)
Well observed :-)
it seems like Doncaster drivers don't like the neighburs rule
Good old Doncaster drivers :-)
ewan newton I agree. I’ve heard of Doncaster signallers complaining about east coast drivers!
@@stuartmenzies8358 Why complaining?
When I was a driver on BR there where 13 horn codes..... these are nothing more than corporate drivers.... ask this 'driver',. if he knows how to do full detonator protection with the TCOC's and the short circuit bar and the hook switch... LMFAO
Dont live neer a railway if you dont like it if i where driveing that train and if it was a diesal loco id thrash it and give them a good 3 tone and id rarther have a wave than a brick through the window
People were also buying houses next to the Leeds/Bradford airport (I believe the deal was you paid lower rates than people further away, I could be wrong though). They then started complaining that aircraft were flying overhead and making a noise...You bought a house on a flight path you idiot!!! What did you expect??? Lol
