  • The Eltai Webinar 113, held on 27-08-2023, at 4:30 pm, via Google Meet, was coordinated by Kavin, ELTAI Webinar Organising Committee. The webinar was hosted by Dr. Vaibhav Sabnis, Associate Professor, DBAM College of Law, Dhule, Maharashtra; and moderated by Ms. Sameena Tabassum, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Maulana Azad National Urdu University. It was attended by 396 participants.
The session began with an ELTAI promotional video. Professor Santosh Mahapatra, Associate Professor, BITS Pilani, Hyderaba, delivered a practical session on “Using ChatGPT in Formative Assessment in the English Language Classroom.” He demonstrated how ChatGPT could be used to create a reading comprehension passage for a formative assessment. He asked ChatGPT to create a reading passage on the history of Hyderabad and ten multiple choice questions based on that passage. He planned for specifications such as the level of students, level of difficulty of questions, etc., and modified the questions using different criteria. Professor showed how he uses the tool to teach writing an abstract in the class. Moreover, the Professor also demonstrated how to take feedback from ChatGPT on our writing. He gave different topic sentences for paragraph writing to ChatGPT and asked for its feedback. ChatGPT offered suggestions on writing paragraphs using the given topic sentences. Interestingly, the Professor began and concluded the session using Mentimeter to take the responses of the audience to some questions. During the Question Answer Session, Professor Mahapatra patiently answered many questions raised in the chat box. Most questions concerned plagiarism, ethical issues, and audio-video content. The professor reiterated that ChatGPT should be used as a facilitator but not to create content for publication, research, or PhD Thesis.
The webinar concluded with positive comments flooding from the participants, in the chat box. It was an highly interactive and useful session on a topic significantly pertinent for ELT professionals and students. On the whole, it was a well-conducted webinar on an interesting and important topic.
