This performance is one of the most stoic I’ve ever seen Lang Lang - especially at the coda; it’s probably a testament to how much concentration that coda demands.
Realy like his performance! He don’t rush with the beautiful theme and melodies, but show his brilliant technique in the fast passages that really can go as fast as possible. And then he also expresses the music in his whole body. 🙏👏👏😀
Got this randomly on my recommended and I just had to compare it to one of Horowitz's versions. I would gladly advise anyone who thinks this is good to listen to Horowitz's version to understand why so many people hate this.
Never seen a pianist “perform” with so much emotion while eliciting none from the music. Horowitz’s version (I think from the 80’s?) is my definitive performance of this piece and I’ve pretty much watched them all after The Pianist came out. He (Horowitz) can and does play at lightning speed but with so much more precision and nuance bringing out the notes he wants to lead the piece.
Lang lang played significant parts of Rachmaninoff 2nd piano concerto without looking to the piano. But he was looking on it the entire coda. really shows how difficult that coda truly is.
It’s also because the coda requires extreme jumps at great speed. Unless you’re Nobuyuki Tsujii, you can’t afford to look away even for a split-second.
Awesome sound effect. If that’s a broken string then he did an amazing job covering it up in the coda where the same note comes up (bars 240-241) But what am I saying, of course he could do that.
this is really pretty, but it feels a bit too harsh to me, idk why. I'm new to classical music, and feel like rousseau's version is a lot more like caressing a child, can anyone recommend what pieces should i compare, and who are great artists?
ua-cam.com/video/BJ6bZnjB-M4/v-deo.htmlsi=qNDnum2i7d4gJ4Cb Seong-Jin Cho's performance. He plays all 4 Ballades very well, and there is a video of his Clair de lune on UA-cam which is perfect. Rousseau is a nice intro to classical music, but there are many more pianists out there!
Listen to Krystian Zimerman's 4 Ballades, Barcarolle and Fantaisie album playlist on youtube. I know his live performances of the Ballades are very popular and you likely listened to them already, but I strongly advise you listen to the studio recordings as well. Pristine sound quality and imo very thoughtful, detailed and expressive interpretation. Ik there are people that like to describe Zimerman's interpretations as robotic and emotionless but I strongly disagree. Another recommendation strictly for the first Ballade this time is Paul Barton's amazing rendition on his Feuriche Piano. If you would like more from Chopin, particularly works on the larger scale then I would recommend his 4 Scherzos (they're not as big as the sonatas but whatever) and his 3 sonatas. His 2nd Scherzo and 3rd Sonata are very popular so you can start with those. For smaller scale works, his Mazurkas and Nocturnes are all wonderful imo. Can't forget his fantastic Polonaises (Op.44 in F sharp minor, Op.53 in A flat major, Op.26 in C sharp minor, Op.26 in E flat minor are my favourites). If you like romantic music and want more than just Chopin then I would recommend Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt and Franz Schubert (There are many other great composers as well so feel free to explore yourself). If you would like quality interpretations of these composers' works and many more, then I strongly recommend the youtube channel: Ashish Xiangyi Kumar, which uploads great interpretations for an extensive range of repertoire which should introduce you to a number of artists of whom you can pick and choose to your liking. I hope this was helpful and wasn't too long 😅 Have a great day!
Wrong from the first notes! The arpeggios in the first three bars must be played without pedal, as Chopin wrote in his score. But Lang lang pushes the pedal and makes a "notes soup" of it from the very beginning. Anything for cheap effect with Lang Lang.
Well, how we want to be better than Chopin, to play like no one else has played, to pull out some previously unknown nuances. And the result is vulgar and tasteless. It's a pity.
How could you say that ? Music is all about subjectivity and wether you like it or not is not a valid reason to define it as bad. His interpretation is in my opinion magnificent and one of the greatest. He breaks free from the burdens of the music sheets and play it the way he wants with an incredible amount of sensitivity as all artists should. Calling it vulgar and tasteless is an immense lack of respect and open mindness. I wonder how you can properly appreciate music without even understanding or accepting it's diversity. Please consider it and try to be nicer, especialy when someone puts his soul in his work. Edit : you might wanna checkout his interpretation of the 4th ballad and think again if he is tasteless
@@gimli4030 I do not dispute the almost transcendent virtuosity of his playing, his ability to attract hundreds of thousands in the open air, his contribution to the popularization of the classics, his charm, hurricane energy and temperament. But this is not why I love Gould, Gilels, Argerich, Sokolov, Sultanov.
I think the current culture and the culture the virtuoso grew up in also has something to do with it. I wouldn't ever dare to criticize him though. You have to have something you were born with to play these pieces. It's almost as if, if I could play so well my ego would probably be the bragadoches, distasteful current that some people would hate and some would love.?.?.?

True. Even Seong Jin Cho has more expression

Thanks, Lang Lang! SUPER! Loved it!
The piano had a voice crack at 5:33
I wish people wouldn’t play the coda at that speed, it is written Presto con Fuoco, which is about half the speed
So true, most people play the coda to quickly in my opinion, i like the speed which rousseau plays it at.
I guess you don't know what presto means.
Presto is about 200 bpm which is too slow and the con fuoco also is a reason people play it fast but yeah this is too fast for me
Came for the coda, stayed for the whole thing😌
The same...🤠
Bravo!
I love his play style!

Best performance I’ve ever heard of this piece. Just wow!
Chopin: Ballade no. 1 é lindíssima!! Este pianista e este piano é de tal forma que como se diz: "NO COMMENTS". Disfrutem....
He is playing the coda part with no problems. Wow
Yes all trained concert pianist do that. Otherwise they wouldnt meet the standards to perform it.

No idea. Incredible video.
