Wonderful tempo! I am revisiting this piece after playing it on my graduate recital over 40 years ago. Ohlson's tempo gives me renewed hope, as I no longer conceive of this piece as I did at age 24! Bravo!

Isn't it wonderful how we mature and see things differently now. I appreciate somewhat slower tempi the older I get. I want to hear every note and intonation. Artistry is everything now for me.

This Steinway concert grand was purchased by the Warsaw Philharmonic for the 2015 Chopin Competition. Jarosław Bednarski is a piano technician who takes care of it. Actually thats the first season after complex refinishing of hammers and action. That's why it sounds pretty fresh

I keep coming back to this version of this piece, musicality at its finest, Garrick knows when to slow it down and when to speed up, I can just feel his soul more with this rendition. Simply Beautiful.

  • @Henri.d.Olivoir

His slower approach makes the section at 5:28 so much more exquisite and beautiful... This is pinnacle sublimity and majesticness

In my mind, a Ballad was always something slow, emotional, romantic. I think that this version is how a Ballade should be played. These days, people just want to play everything at lightning fast speeds, and it's just impossible to enjoy and feel the music. This is really so exquisite, what a performance!

    • @Rach-Fanatic

I disagree, this ballade is played to slow. It’s a story, and life doesn’t always go slow. Hofmann and Hambourgs performance of this are the best.

Increíble ! Bravo.

Unfuckingbelievable! Mr. Ohlson tells us a story of young love, love lost, and love regained. Being able to tell a story is what makes a performance exceptional. I also admire the way he reinterprets a piece over 50 years. Listen to his recording from 1970, the year he won the International Chopin Competition. It tells a different story, equally valid.

Bravo bravo bravo bravo.

Same, it’s amazing. Quite frankly I enjoy it more than the coda, which meant to be the climax of the piece.

Just curious, I know that he uses a lot of rubato but isn't the tempo and rhythm really all over the place? Like it's beyond rubato at this point.

El rubato es algo personal, si te gusta, ok, si no te gusta, ok. Así de simple

It was perfect until the Coda-he seemed to rush it a bit. The rest was exquisite!

Mr Ohlson reminds me of Horowitz-no theatrics, just excellent perfect playing. I can't stand watching Lang Lang.
