Had no idea that the save batteries had longevity issues like that. I change mine at the beginning of every year, and routinely back up saves to the Action Replay just to be safe. Haven't had any issues yet, although I have only been a Saturn owner for about 7 years. 7 glorious years.
7:30 If you take apart a Japanese Saturn, you'll see the power supply actually says "100-120v" right on the PCB, so a step down converter is pretty much unnecessary.
Your coverage, and love for the Saturn is, awesome and admirable. I used a Game Shark for years, but the lack of ram excluded my Super Marvel Hero's vs Street Fighter gameplay so I ended purchasing Action Replay...I'm happy. Yes, I'm a fan of the original North American Saturn controller but also understand the shoulder button flaws. Really look forward to part 3 of this. Keep up the great work man!
Thanks for these videos. I’ve been hankering for a Saturn fire years and been looking into finally picking one up to play some Shmups and other games I missed.
Awesome vid as always, SLX. I’m a CRT purist, too. I never got into the RGB thing, but someone from Japan is selling Saturn components cables. They’re a little pricey, but they make a big difference over S-video. Clearer image and much more vibrant colors. I have one for my Sony CRT and one for my Toshiba TV that stays in Tate mode. After I’ve seen how the Saturn looks with them I couldn’t live without them.
Thank you so so so much for the buyers guide! I can't wait for my system to come in the mail, but I am totally lost on what to buy for it. All I have is the console and controllers so far.
Finally a guy who really knows the Saturn !!! I just subscribed and have been a huge Saturn fan since 1994, when I bought mine and still have it!! Just one question: I see you use an upscaler. Do you recommend 1080p or 1260x 720 on a normal hd tv? Thanks.
The system language option does change the language setting in some games, for example, Samurai Shodown 4 will automatically boot with the English setting turned on by default, if it detects that your system language is set accordingly.
The Action Replay is really a key thing to have. As a Saturn owner I've got a standard one for save data and a flashed one for playing back ups, I can't afford the price of buying a ton of Saturn original copies so I opted to burn the majority of my collection. Great video as always.
4 controller ports, the cart slot being for genesis cartridges, analog control sticks, more internal memory, and memory cards would have gone along way to keeping the Saturn around alot longer.
Damn that battery! I keep a few handy at all times, but I've also come to terms with the fact that I'm just going to lose my stuff at some point. I kept one action replay factory to store all my Shining Force files, but it's still a heart breaker to be hit with the setup screen. As always, great video!
9:00 Something that never gets mentioned when talking about link play is that the US version of Baku Baku actually has a hidden game mode called league mode. The menus are still in Japanese though. I suspect Sega intended for the slot to have the official save cart plugged in at all times. That said I do have a pseudo Saturn cart for homebrew like English Policenauts or Dragon Force II. The best thing to do with batteries is to make a habit of chaging the battery every so often, I personally replace it every 8-10 months, and its yet to run out on me.
Just stumbled across this channel and already watched about half the videos. Excellent content. Sega has never gotten the love I felt like it deserved. Any plans to add more Dreamcast content?
Plans to add content for every category of Sega. Modern, Dreamcast, Sega CD, Master System, etc. My time alocation for the UA-cam hobby is low, but I'll get to it eventually.
Great shit! Absolutely love how SEGA was so ahead of it's time....too bad they didn't push the envelope of what they had over kissing the consoles next to them.
I thought the Saturn Doom port was the one that said on the box it supported link cable multi-player but didn't, along with a handful of other errors on the back of the case?
The Saturn was overly complex and impractical in a lot of ways, but it had some very good hardware if the developer embraced its strengths. It could be every bit as impressive as the N64 and PS1.
and sometimes even more impressive... the capcom fighters for example.. generally anything 2d that was also on the PS1 tends to look way better on the saturn.
The Saturn was a BEAST of a machine and VERY misunderstood. Imo EASILY the best 5th Gen games console, but then I am a SEGA fanboy. Serious point- Compare VF2 on Saturn to Tekken 1-3 on PS1 and tell me PS1 had better 3D graphics with a straight face. When Saturn was programmed for my AM2, it blew PS1 out of the water in every time.
The resolution and framerate of VF2 for the Saturn was awesome for sure. I thought Last Bronx looked even better on the Saturn. Kept the incredible resolution and 60fps, and added some awesome backgrounds. Played good too.
Just recently bought a NA Sega Saturn for the first time ever since wanting one as a kid all those years ago. Ended up finding a great Japanese White Model 2 bundle on ebay with region free bios already modded in and a handful of games and a 3D controller to boot. Wouldn't have had to courage to go for it had it not been for me marathoning your videos Sega Lord X. Keep up the great content! Also was part 3 of this hardware buying guide ever uploaded? I've looked all over the channel but couldn't find it?
There is a new cart that is better than Action Replay flashed with Pseudo Saturn. It has Pseudo Saturn, region unlock, 1M RAM, 4M RAM, and memory backup. There is switch on the top of the cart to select between 1M RAM/4M RAM/memory backup. This is better than AR since you can manually select 1M or 4M for the correct game (some AR's load 4M for 1M games which glitch the sprites). The memory backup also supports direct saving/loading from within the game, which the AR does not do. But the best option is a modded console with region-free bios and modchip.

No. One cart slot so only one could be used at a time. Most of the games that used the ROM/RAM carts were fighters and didn't need much save space, thankfully.
Luv these videos...model 1 ftw...for many reasons... @10:27 = truth ! I can make full vcds look like dvds (or better) =) I wonder is cd+g cinepak video (pre mpeg1) for sega cd and saturn?
The Saturn has a chip in it very similar to the CPU in the Genesis/MD. Sega could have made a cart adapter and had backwards compatibility if they wanted it. Sega just abandoned their 16-bit market, though, and never looked back.
@@SegaLordX The real problem is Sega let the success of the Megadrive to go to their heads and then they went totally brain dead after with no chance to compete with the Playstation and later the PS2 which to me is still the best console ever after the Megadrive and I still play my PS2 all the time.
You prolly dont give a shit but if you are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream all of the latest movies and series on InstaFlixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother recently :)
If you do a hardware part 3, it might be worth mentioning the problems with Saturn cart slots. I own a lot of Saturns and leave carts permanently seated in the systems after nearly a quarter century of struggling with the unreliable pins in the cart slot and having issues getting carts to consistently read if at all.
I recently unearthed my model 1 from storage and I nearly had a heart attack thinking my cartridge slot had died. But, no, it was just a finicky cartridge slot. Now I have to slightly pull my official backup RAM cart up in order for the Saturn to read it.
Reluctant Hero the annoying thing is getting the 4mb fighters to load. I keep having to blow the cart. For some reason my pads dont always work when you plug them in during a game. happens on all 4 of mine sometimes.
Kevin Young , ugh, good point. I’m going to need to go back to my storage unit and retrieve my Japanese Saturn. I’d rather leave the backup ram permanently inserted into my US model 1.
I’ve got a Magic Card V2 which was used as a way of playing backups before the arrival of modchips and the Psuedo Saturn Cart. Quite a rare accessory, but a little bit dated these days. Talking of power supplies I back an indiegogo campaign a while back for a replacement power supply for the Saturn called SaturnPSU. It’s better for me here in the UK as it will allow me to power my Japanese Saturn without having to use a step down transformer. One of the problems I've had with mine is that the cartridge slot isn't the best as it has trouble registering theres a cart in the slot. I've found a way around this is to slight lift the cart out of the slot slightly. I've looked on the net and it seems really awkward to fix, which is a shame :( Great video SLG.
The early 3rd party carts where awful for wrecking the Saturn's cart slot. The contacts where thicker than official carts and it made a mess of things once it was inserted multiple times.
Another great video again! Will you ever make videos about game comparisons? like eternal champion genes vs Cd version? I mean, a full detailed technical list of differences between them Like animation for the sprites, backgrouds, effects.. sound ect. Or Street fighter 2 CE vs Super street fighter 2 (both genesis versions) have a nice weekend!
Given the limited time I have for the content, I tend to stick to overviews and opinion pieces. If the channel ever takes off, I'd love to do more in depth content, though.
I've always wanted to get an Action Replay cartridge with Pseudo Saturn. I have a North American Model 2 console (un-modded) and was wondering if one of those will work on that particular model.
Great stuff as always. I know the US Marvel Super Heroes supports the RAM upgrade, but are you aware of any other US releases that utilized RAM enhancememt?
Hey thanks for the videos. It's 2023, and I'm just now interested in buying a Saturn. You mentioned that you play your Saturn on a CRT, so which output do you use? S-Video or RGB scart?
@@SegaLordX Awesome! I have loads of Saturn peripherals myself, such as the Twin Sticks, the Mission Stick, even the Densha de Go! train simulator controller. It'll be good to see which ones I've missed and which to prioritise purchasing... BTW, the Twin Sticks and Mission Stick are rather fun to play Wipeout with, they almost make it feel like you are actually piloting the craft 😉 Lastly, the Explorer Pad is the worst gaming controller I have ever had the misfortune in holding!
I'm looking on getting a sega Saturn the white Japanese version never played a sega Saturn almost got one when it came out but decided to get a ps1 instead
Superb intro! I know this has been discussed in the comments, but is it true about the Action Replay Carts? The thickness tends to ruin the cartridge slot. You know that communication slot? I was wanting to know if you own the Sega Saturn Floppy Disc Drive. It is another awesome alternative to the cartridge slot to save games on.
The old AR carts were the worst. They did wreck the slots. The newer ones are a bit better. I don't have a working floppy drive for the Saturn currently.
it is more convenient buy the modchip and mount it on the saturn motherboard then the pseudo saturn or wait for professor abrasive satiator that can load saturn game from a usb stick or sd card.
Pa M I use this cart that is a preflashed Pseudo Saturn with working RAM and Save Memory, and I find it just as convenient and easy as a modchip. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F153119197574
I just flashed my AR cart the last week on model one through the swap method It works great I have yet to find a copy that won't work. been playing SF zero 3 every night, still wish that i had the save function though but i cant complain.
So Crates if you are happy to risk loosing saturn internal saves i am happy for you. I preferred to use a mod chip and universal bios replacement. Bios replacement is better than region switch because every time region is changed internal data saved are erased.
Sega Lord X you were very lucky. Universal bios was made because the erasing memory iusse. I clearly remember my first modded saturn erasing its memory every region changes
I've got really big hands, and I actually prefer the American Saturn controller. It's even better once you realize you can put the d-pad from a Japanese controller on an American one.
Hi I'm currently using a SCART connection on a modded grey Japanese Saturn. I dont have a CRT TV, what would you recommend to help get the best picture quality? I have looked into scalers but not sure what would work best and if they make a big difference?
@@SegaLordX yes I've heard about these but it's just the price tag! Are there any more cost effective solutions? And would I really be gaining much more from using one? Love your content btw. Keep up the great work :)

Sega Lord X Cool! I work with a guy from Baltimore and you guys sounds like brothers. Thanks for the reply. Keep the Saturn videos coming. Also, are you familiar with The VGC replacement long box Saturn/Sega CD cases on Amazon? I bought some and have my own opinion but curious if you had any hands on?
I got a few batches of them when they first came out. They're what you should expect from a cheap 3rd party copy. Looks the part, but it's got its problems. I used some clear nail polish to keep the CD try snug in the ones I used. I wouldn't put an expensive game in one, though.
Just purchased a white model 2. It's my first Saturn and I love how they look. Thanks for making these videos they helped out a newbie!

The Sega Saturn's Action Replay Plus RAM cartridge is the superior memory cartridge. I would avoid saving data to the Saturn's internal battery.

They work on all models. Try and get a new one. The older ones are less reliable and harder on the cart slots.
Great stuff as always. I know the US Marvel Super Heroes supports the RAM upgrade, but are you aware of any other US releases that utilized RAM enhancememt?
No. The vast majority of the games that supported the RAM carts never were released outside of Japan.
Love that music in the intro, does anyone know what it’s from? I’m sure I’ve heard it before, maybe a Sonic game 🤔
Nate hi ! I'm glad you like the intro I made for Segalordx! The music is from Nights I believe !
Nate it’s from NiGHTS into Dreams. Song is message from nightopia
Yup. Nights had some great music.
Hey thanks for the videos. It's 2023, and I'm just now interested in buying a Saturn. You mentioned that you play your Saturn on a CRT, so which output do you use? S-Video or RGB scart?
Sega of America doesn't get enough hate.
I remember sim city 2000 taking up the entire saturn's internal memory. I had to buy the sega backup ram cart.
Madden 98 did as well. The entire damn thing.
Thanks for the info
Did you do a video on the peripherals? I can't find it on your video list.
Not yet. I'm still planning on it though.
@@SegaLordX Awesome! I have loads of Saturn peripherals myself, such as the Twin Sticks, the Mission Stick, even the Densha de Go! train simulator controller. It'll be good to see which ones I've missed and which to prioritise purchasing... BTW, the Twin Sticks and Mission Stick are rather fun to play Wipeout with, they almost make it feel like you are actually piloting the craft 😉
Lastly, the Explorer Pad is the worst gaming controller I have ever had the misfortune in holding!
I'm looking on getting a sega Saturn the white Japanese version never played a sega Saturn almost got one when it came out but decided to get a ps1 instead
Great video!!
Didn't Reverthion use the link cable as well? I heard it did, never got to try it.
Yes, it did.
Do I need a power convertor with a Japanese Saturn using USA current?
What about Game Basic for Sega Saturn?
Superb intro! I know this has been discussed in the comments, but is it true about the Action Replay Carts? The thickness tends to ruin the cartridge slot.
You know that communication slot? I was wanting to know if you own the Sega Saturn Floppy Disc Drive. It is another awesome alternative to the cartridge slot to save games on.
The old AR carts were the worst. They did wreck the slots. The newer ones are a bit better. I don't have a working floppy drive for the Saturn currently.
I still do not trust AR carts completely. I want to get my Saturn modded to be region free, so I may be able to remove the cart.
Ooh a new intro
it is more convenient buy the modchip and mount it on the saturn motherboard then the pseudo saturn or wait for professor abrasive satiator that can load saturn game from a usb stick or sd card.
I've had a region switch in my Saturn for near 20 years now. It's never erased my save games.
Next do a vid on pads, sticks and stuff.
Hi I'm currently using a SCART connection on a modded grey Japanese Saturn. I dont have a CRT TV, what would you recommend to help get the best picture quality? I have looked into scalers but not sure what would work best and if they make a big difference?
Retrotink makes a great SCART to HDMI line doubler.
@@SegaLordX yes I've heard about these but it's just the price tag! Are there any more cost effective solutions? And would I really be gaining much more from using one?
Love your content btw. Keep up the great work :)

on ebay i see a lot from japan if i order one do i have to pay import tax?
Where are you located?
USA TN
You'll be fine. Just pay the price plus shipping and you're done.
thanks man they have some nice looking ones in japan
I have an hdtv, 4k actually. Which of the cheaper converter boxes do you recommend? Thanks
The entry level $30 boxes have a bit of lag in them. The better ones work, but keep that in mind. If you are willing to spend $99, look here:

Nice video. Curious about your accent...just curious if you were from the Baltimore area?
Central VA. About 2 hours away from Baltimore.
Is it possible to play Genesis games on this console? With any mod whatsoever?
No. The Saturn was an island as far as Sega games are concerned.
A video capacitor just went bad in my Sega Saturn as I was wrapping up Shining Force 3 for the first time. I am heartbroken 😭
Is composite video bad or something that’s all I can do
Quality is just very poor when compared to S-Video/RGB.
